Guiding - would you go back now?

My socials are full of very sad people being very sad that Guiding is for girls. It seems lots of leaders are threatening to quit.

i feel the opposite. If I find a unit that knows that girls need single sex groups then I’d volunteer.

Yes. And I was completely indifferent to GG until yesterday. The various social media posts etc over the past two days have been infuriating.

I was a Guide in the 1970s and can, hand on heart, say the experience totally transformed my life and made me the person I am today. Resiliant, self sufficient, pretty fearless and very practical. Guiding is wonderful for girls and young women and I would do it again willingly.

I listened to the phone in on Jeremy Vine yesterday, after he'd interviewed Helen Joyce and the other person(I cant remember their name). There was one woman who said it shouldn't have happened in the first place etc and three other women all bleating. I wonder how many didn't call in because they were still worried they'd be outed as GC. The woman who did gave a false name.
It's always framed as the horrid women upsetting everyone and spoiling the fun. JV said that to Helen but not to the other person.

i feel it sort of blames women and girls in a way. I think that we need things for girls because of how they are brought up and treated in society - we need girls to learn self confidence , leadership etc but if you accept it’s gender identity that’s the key factor you are making it “your choice to be a woman, your chosen gender identity - means you have accepted that women don’t make good leaders but don’t worry we will show you that’s not true “

you are at fault - not you have been misled and mistreated and that’s what’s made you absorb the message but simply your acceptance of having a specific gender identity Means you think like that

sex impacts on girls lives, I think sex = female and gender = femininity. One is inescapable and one is optional.

girls lives are so different from when I was young, they are bombarded with sexualised material all the time.

An all girl environment is a break from the effects of how society treats them because of their sex. I hadn’t thought Guides were criticising gender roles, it’s entirely possible I missed it

If I had girls (only had boys) , I would definitely consider it now, and we have several generations of guiding in the family.

Not until they get rid of the men claiming to be women in leadership positions. A single sex environment is very important but safeguarding is too and so is avoiding the messaging around gender identity. I don’t think GG have understood the whole picture, they have just been forced to do the right thing by law.
Heres hoping the rest gets sorted out soon.

Me? I am sick of people saying woman is biological women plus some men without giving me the slightest idea why I am a woman because if biological men can be women then some biological women must be men

whixh is why I prefer the GC argument- there is nothing wrong with me that needs changing, just the world should stop being so bloody gender restrictive and let people be and live as themselves. ( and that’s transgender words right back at them )

but that’s includes recognising that males and females do have different biology. And that includes recognising that until we get to a gender free world those bloody women need some support to equal the playing field and help them

Only someone wanting to take offence would claim to think that getting rid of someone in a leadership position means killing them rather than, you know, just removing them from the position.

Get rid of was a bad turn of phrase as it can be misinterpreted by those keen to do so. Although the fuller phrase of get rid of men claiming to be women in leadership positions makes it clear it’s getting rid of - ejecting or renaming - them from the leadership positions not getting rid of them per se

remove men from those spaces would have been better - I think not just leadership positions but any place which is allocated in some way for women should not be occupied by males however they identify

I had a friend who was a GG leader who left with frustrations about how badly it was run and that it didn’t recognise she was a volunteer with a FT job. If you don’t treat your volunteers well then as an organisation you will always have issues.

I think that dudes should accept when women and girls say 'no' to them.

It is an issue of recognising consent. Just like the issue of claiming words to mean what you want them to mean rather what the majority of the population using the language knows it means due to centuries of usage.

If a male person cannot recognise that female people are saying they don't consent, that is a fucking massive issue.
