Depressing list. However I don’t think the BBC are to blame for the composition of University Challenge teams, I think the Universities/Colleges can pick who they like. And I agree with that. And I wouldn’t have a problem with an all-transwomen team if that was who the University thought would do best.

That is quite the list… well done nutmeg for collating. It’s extremely damning evidence - I hope it gets picked up by the mainstream media because it illustrates perfectly how captured they are. Thank you @ArabellaSaurus - I read through the whole list and was surprised that my jaw dropped a few times (given that my starting point was that the BBC is insane on this).

@DuchessofReality I am ready to believe that the BBC doesn't pick the University Challenge teams but how can we (or they, if they cared about women) monitor and review female representation if they are deceiving themselves about who makes up the teams? If loads of universities put forward teams made up of all white, all female, all disabled, all gay - it doesn't matter what the characteristic is, we just need to know what it is! Viewers can then have honest discussions about under-representation, etc. It's the only way we can move towards greater equality, something progressives are supposed to be keen on.

I apologise now for how long it will take you to read all the nuance and deep insight he displays on the subject.

He manages to miss that it's possible for there to be a right-wing conspiracy to bring down the BBC (and the NHS) AND for both those organisations to have completely lost their minds on something a 4-year-old could have helped them with.

was watching live parliament this evening when nandy was talking about the bbc and she answered every question till it got uncomfortable when an mp talked about how the bbc promoted children getting puberty blockers how women were equal to racist for talking about womens rights

I am about to go and see the Rest is Politics Live and have read the New World article. I know he's dismissed this as right wing bigotry before. He's painted himself into a corner on this and as the juggernaut turns, he is getting caught out. I subscribe to the New World/European and I'm watching their take on this shit. There were 38 comments under Alastair's article, all from the same echo chamber. I don't need another echo chamber in my life. They've got until my June renewal date to educate themselves or I'm moving on.

How would Alistair know that the Beeb hadn’t been biased on the issue without investigating? If you only see what you see you don’t know what you don’t see (known knowns and unknown unknowns come to mind)

The fact that they didn't report much about the paedophile Stephen Ireland is shocking. But then, it's the same up in Scotland as the government funded lobby LGBTQ Youth Scotland had a paedophile as it's CEO and no formal investigation was done when he was found out and convicted. Hardly anything in the news about it.

I'd also add Strictly come dancing; that's as mainstream as you can get, prime time Saturday and Sunday night. Last Christmas a drag queen won the Christmas special and this year they have a drag queen on it. He seems nice enough in the vox pops but it enrages me when Tess and/or Claudia refer to him as "she".

Re University Challenge, the BBC doesn't pick the teams, but they employed a former competitor on the production team a few years back whose brief included working on trying to get the universities to put forward teams that were not all male. Very laudable, but he was a trans-identified male (Lillian Crawford) who believed that a team of four biological males was indeed more inclusive if one of them identified as a woman. He was very miffed indeed when his contract ended and was not renewed and disgusted at Amol Rajan's appointment as host because of some TERF-adjacent thing he'd done. Tainted by association! (I think Amol is doing a fantastic job on UC, btw.)

Last Monday Mastermind, Only Connect and University Challenge (on one after another) all featured a trans-identified male as a contestant. I don't know how contestants are selected for Mastermind or Only Connect. I would assume you have to qualify, as the UC teams do, so maybe the BBC is stuck with whoever comes forward and does well.

Radio 4 announced they had an all-female final for the first time in their long-running quiz show Brain of Brtain in 2022. Woman's Hour celebrated this and it was mentioned on various news programmes. They didn't, of course. ISTR it was the New European who published that idiotic and defamatory article about GC court cases by misogynistic barrister and legal pundit Sam Fowles. They swiftly had to take it down.

The sexual nature of the entire issue is very obvious, too.

This man dresses as a baby girl and wears nappies. He goes into local primary schools to 'teach children about autism' and tries to have one-to-one sessions with them. Despite the obvious red flags, the BBC profiled and promoted him

A BBC presenter launched a project in which she distributed badges, saying 'Safe With Me', in schools, for children to wear in public places. The badges signify to any 'trans people' nearby that the child will escort them to a toilet

Ffs. You have live in a cave not to imagine how paedophiles will flock to a loophole that says kids can take you to the toilet, or you can be one-to-one with them while wearing a nappy.

Um, actually they do. DS was on a team that wasn't picked for the show because, they were told, they weren't quirky enough - they didn't shine through on screen.

They scope for personalities and talking points. Sometimes that might just be absolutely amazing knowledge. Sometimes it might be a uni you never heard of or a very old or young team. But there is selection and bias.

I'm thinking of that series called 'Butterflies' or similar, with Anna Friel, story of a trans identifying boy. And is/was Coronation Street BBC?

The New World/European also employs Matthew d’Aconda, who is sex realist (and has written/edited for both right and left wing media outlets). I suspect meetings between Campbell and d’Aconda are interesting right now!

Editing to add that I’m afraid I now only read Sonia’s pieces. I bought the first edition of New World and couldn’t bear the patronising tone towards Brexit - and I voted remain.

Both made for ITV. I'm sure a top forty for ITV could easily be made. ITV News for starters have had fawning interviews with the cyclist Bridges.

Yes, I remember watching a programme about the making of University Challenge which explained that it wasn't necessarily the 'brainiest' teams which were selected. So, although the BBC/production company don't choose the team members, they do choose which teams compete - and on a subjective basis.
