Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Your Corbyn/Sultana Party - Discussion thread - Part 2

The YP starting conference is in the ACC in Liverpool between 29-30 November so only three weeks off. With competing factions involving Islamic conservatives, every variety of Marxist/Communist, former Labour members, trade union activists, entryists from SWP and SPEW, splitters from the Scottish Greens, trans activists and actual left wing feminists [not the nice kind] it is difficult to underplay how much controversy there is likely to be. So we will need a second thread in advance.

Thus far following the internal drama of the UKs newest left party has taken a whole thread. It has been a wild ride and the party still does not have a name.

Sultana tweeted to abolish the monarchy on NYD. The monarchy she swore an oath to defend. Actual Republicans don't take seats in the King's Parliament though.

She followed that up with an attack on the Scottish Greens as militarists. Presumably to help YP Scotland. Led to a scrap which was part of wider divisions between SNP and Scottish Greens over arms sales.

Speaking of rape apologists, when do we get to vote on Ross Greer?

Sultana has pledged solidarity with the Pale Venezuelan people.

Bit of a given. There is an emergency picket that's been organised that's she's retweeted

It's like Rick from The Young Ones never went away.

Lalgarh · 04/01/2026 11:31

A very large zoom call, by the looks of it

I have no idea but it gave me a big laugh.

Even LOJ quietly stopped bigging up Maduro several years ago.

But I suppose it all gets filtered through American partisan politics and the need to take a stance opposite to Trump no matter what he's doing. The Biden admin put a price on Maduro's head a little over a year ago, but looking at US media today, the Democrats haven't been this upset about a terrorist being apprehended since John Wilkes Booth.

Lalgarh · 04/01/2026 11:49

Careful who you support Zarah, Venezuela under Chavista Maduro wasn't an LGBT safe space

So where is the Iran solidarity rally where an elite bunch of imperialistic religious fanatics are crushing workers and women AGAIN! Because they want an end to foreign wars, and basic freedom and you know little things like water.

Oh wait same place as the rally for the Sudanese people being slaughtered. Being ignored.

There's bound to be an Iran solidarity rally in London. But it will be organised by Iranian monarchists and the left won't go near it.

I'm looking forward to more details coming out about the Maduro operation. Strong suggestions from the Venezuelan opposition that there was a lot of stage management. Maybe people in the regime figured out they might preserve their power better by offloading an increasingly erratic Maduro. This doesn't fit Zarah's Third Worldist positioning, but it seems credible to me.

Lalgarh · 04/01/2026 12:00

Stop The War are famously Not including Ukraine in their list of Terrible Imperialist Wars To Protest Against and are like "oooh it's complex" in a way they never would accept for their favoured causes. Following Noam Chomsky and the late John Pilgers lead that if the UK (which is a poodle of the Usa obvs) has chosen a side it's wrong

It's like an emergency podcast but with yet lower production values.

TempestTost · 04/01/2026 19:56

Isn't the point of a rally a kind of public show of feeling? Who is going to see an online rally?

TempestTost · 04/01/2026 19:57

And now I am thinking about everyone sitting home chanting slogans at their computer screens...

Well, quite.

I expect they'll just froth and fume and throw out ever more ridiculous ideas for "actions". Which they are unlikely to undertake as that would mean leaving the house.

FallenSloppyDead2 · 04/01/2026 20:34

We've had Working From Home, now we have Protesting From Home. Slogan T-shirt from the waist up, jim jams and slippers below.

SionnachRuadh · 04/01/2026 21:01

I think it's a bit like when organisations say "we had 100,000 people on our Zoom call" as if that was active participation. The US Democrats do it as a fundraising thing, like people sitting on a Zoom listening to George Takei and Mark Hamill sound off about Trump, while donating to the current election campaign.

I've never seen the appeal - if you really want to see George Takei and Mark Hamill sound off about Trump, they do it 16 hours a day on Bluesky for free - but it seems to raise money.

So I think this is similar, except you get to listen to Lindsey German, Richard Burgon and unemployed maharajah Tariq Ali.

Overview
No to Trump's bombing of Venezuela, no to US regime change.
Donald Trump has ordered an illegal and dangerous military attack on Venezuela — a blatant attempt to impose regime change on a sovereign nation. This act of aggression violates international law and threatens catastrophic consequences for the people of Venezuela and the wider region.
This war is about control of Venezuela’s vast oil reserves and a renewed US drive to dominate Latin America, treating it once again as a colonial backyard.
As part of this operation, Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, has been forcibly removed in an attempt to seize control of the country and its resources. This sets a terrifying precedent that no nation is safe from military intervention if it stands in the way of US interests.
Join us to demand an immediate end to this illegal military action, the safe return of President Maduro, and respect for Venezuela’s sovereignty. We also call on the UK Government to break its silence and unequivocally condemn this act of aggression.
No to war. No to regime change.
Organised by Venezuela Solidarity Campaign, Stop the War Coalition, CND

Ah CND. Fond memories of Greenham Common and being 'processed' by the police at RAF Wethersfield.

Now I thank f**k that we didn't unilaterally disarm ☮

Sure, but Trump starting regime change in Venezuela is hardly good news.

Probably not, but it's what the US does in Latin America

Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Dominican Republic (that was the murder of a right-wing dictator, for a change), Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama (a military dictator this time).

That was already a given, I would think.
