Girlguiding faces legal action from parent over trans policy

Good. Well done that parent!

Charity is accused of failing to follow Supreme Court ruling on gender, leaving girls ‘exposed to harassment’

Girlguiding is facing legal action from a parent over its transgender policy which she claims discriminates against her seven-year-old daughter.

The claimant, who has asked to remain anonymous to protect her daughter’s identity, has alleged in a pre-action letter to Girlguiding that the organisation’s policy “exposes girls to harassment”.

Under the policy, trans girls — boys who identify as girls — are allowed to join Girlguiding, and trans women — adult males who identify as female — are permitted to undertake volunteer roles previously reserved for women.

“It constitutes and encourages unwanted conduct which violates their [girls’] dignity or creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment,” the correspondence said.

“This includes, but is not limited to: sharing toilets, showers or changing facilities with boys, contact sports with boys, and sharing accommodation with boys, all without their prior knowledge or consent.”

The letter goes on to point out that Girlguiding operates “as a charity for the benefit of girls and young women”.

Depressing how many leaders are kicking off about it on Facebook

Those of us who are sex realistic and who are in the huge majority keep our heads down and don't post in case we are hounded.
Unfortunately a small number of men have managed to gain a lot of influence and women are still scared.
I know I don't have the confidence to disagree in public

LostMySocks · 02/12/2025 16:19

I do feel sorry for the confused young boys who will be having to give up something that they enjoyed. They have been hugely let down by their adults who should have supported them to express their personality but explained that you can't just change sex and that the right to be who you want to be doesn't give you privileges to take away other's rights

Why? They can join Cubs, where they should have been all along.

My suggestion is that you go to www.girlguiding.org.uk/about-us/contact-us and add a comment like this:

"I'm glad to see your statement at www.girlguiding.org.uk/information-for-volunteers/updates-for-our-members/equality-diversity-policy-statement confirming a sex-realist policy. Will you be contacting to the Guide Leaders who you ousted for their alleged transphobia now and will you offer them re-instatement and/or an apology?"

Btw, it was Helen Watts who was expelled in 2018 after "a number of complaints" because she said girls had a right to "female-only spaces". www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-45642054

Exactly. They could have joined Scouting and expressed their gender identity in a mixed sex organisation to their heart's content. Joining a (supposedly) single sex organisation which used an association and club exemption to keep other boys out shows that validation was the main aim, at the expense of girls.

And as we keep saying, girls and women aren't validation tools, a resource to be exploited, human shields etc.

I wouldn't even mention the word "transphobia". Maybe something like:

Will you be contacting to the Guide Leaders who you ousted for being sex realists/gender critical [choose one] now, and will you offer them re-instatement and/or an apology?"

I wasn’t expelled from Guiding but I was made to feel so uncomfortable by the local leadership team about something I posted on FB about the risks of mixed sex Brownie residentials (I was given a warning) that I left. I was a DC at the time too.
I feel like writing to the local leadership to tell them I was right after all.

I agree. A lot of these boys are vulnerable in one way or another and they should have been given appropriate support and direction. They will now feel upset and that something has been taken away from them, because they were told by adults that they had a right to be there.

No, they never should have been in guiding. But remember these are still children and those of us in the scouting and guiding movements should always have the best interests of children at heart.

Done and raised safeguarding concern about how biologically sexed men are recorded for safeguarding no matter their gender ideology.

Well, no, in Girlguiding you should always have had the best interest of girls at heart.
The clue is right there in the name.

And their best interests have been served by this decision.

But if you have become so jaded by the fighting between the GC and TRA movements that you do not care about the harms being done to young boys by it, you should take a step back and have a serious look at yourself. Children are children.

It's not GCs doing harm to these young boys.

I’m aware of the harm done to young boys by telling them they can be girls if they want to be.
Allowing them to cause harm to actual girls by joining girl guides and parodying girlhood is not the answer?
I don’t think it’s me who needs to have a long hard look at themselves, tbh.

But it’s not GGUK that is doing harm to young boys - it’s society; schools; the affirmation model that tells a fragile and confused little boy that he is, in fact, a girl; it’s activist/homophobic/toxic parents who have encouraged that little boy to feel less than perfect exactly as he is. It is not the responsibility of little girls in GGUK to rectify this complex social issue. It is society at large, within a framework that includes school, social services, CAMHS, the NHS and family support service, that needs to change to protect them. In the interim, there is Scouts and a whole host of mixed sex youth organisations to welcome the little boys themselves.

lcakethereforeIam · 02/12/2025 20:48

I'm assuming any confused young girls who think they are trans will still be welcome. So not trans exclusionary.

Yes. It’s not trans exclusionary….just excludes boys.

Yes. Guiding always has been open to all girls however they identify. Trans identified girls were specifically included within the old policy due to their sex.......

There is a lot of noise on social media but the numbers are extremely low compared with our total number of volunteers. Those of us who value the girls only space contine to keep our heads down to avoid the abuse. I am thinking of how to phrase a positive email to HQ.

But it was the parents who told these boys they were girls. It’s up to the parents to try to undo the harm they caused. These children were so let down by the people who were supposed to protect them. But that’s not women’s problem. Why should women have to be the ones picking up the pieces.

I thought that male to female transition is mainly a middle aged thing, and female to male transition is a youngsters' thing, sometimes because they are autistic or gay or both. So I am assuming there aren't that many trans girls to cause all this angst in the first place.

Anyway, yes they can join cubs. Or another unisex organisation that caters to their hobbies.

Seems to me that the bigger fight is yet to be won - dealing with transwomen helpers.

Quite honestly, I'm disgusted by what a bunch of transphobes you are. What do you think we have the kids doing on guiding? Running around and flashing their genitals? As nice as it is to have a girl only space (any by girl I mean anyone who identifies as a girl, not just those who were born with female genitals), I sincerely hope that if the issue is curved on this, the way Girlguiding responds is to change who they accept so they accept girls and boys (but keep the name Girlguiding so it doesn't appeal to boys). We might have less of a struggle for leaders then too because we wouldn't be putting off dads/men.
Seriously, get a grip and stop hating on people for who they are.

If you break it down to the most basic things, a single sex girls group has very few safeguarding issues, a mixed sex teenagers group has much more safeguarding issues. Teenage boys and girls sharing showers & sleeping spaces at camps for one thing. We sex segregate and chaperone things like this after the age of 10 for good reason, to disregard this because a boy says he thinks he’s a girl is foolish and naive.

I feel the same about my previous Stonewalled employer where I was sniped at in meetings for “needing more training on the Equality Act.” 🙄 My comments at the time were entirely in line with the law as written. I knew they were muppets then and that I was right. The recent FWS SC ruling confirmed it.

I've just replied to the Girlguiding email with a brief positive message saying how happy I am that they've made Guides about girls and women again and how great that is for girls, parents and leaders.

I wanted to counteract the online moaning and show that many parents are happy about this decision.

And thank you so much to the parent who put in the work preparing for legal action! Time well spent :)
