Dr Joseph Chrysostom - Open letter to the young people of Britain

Apologies if there is already a thread on this - just read this reposted by Seen in Journalism.

I have written an open letter to the young people of Britain who may be considering undergoing the unscientific and mutilating procedure known as “gender-affirming surgery.”
My purpose is to urge them to pause and carefully reconsider their decision.
Open Letter to British Youth Considering Gender Surgery
Dear Young People,
I am Dr. Joseph Chrysostom, a medical doctor who has served in the NHS for over 25 years. I am writing to you out of deep concern and genuine care — to warn you about what I believe to be some of the most harmful and deceptive medical practices currently happening in our country. These include the use of cross-sex hormones and surgeries such as vaginoplasty, orchidectomy, and phalloplasty, offered both within and outside the NHS. What I write here reflects my professional opinion and sincerely held belief based on my knowledge of human biology and surgical practice.
You have been told that you can “change sex.” But biologically, that is impossible. Every one of your body’s trillions of cells carries either XX or XY chromosomes — a genetic signature that cannot be altered by hormones or surgery. To claim otherwise is, in my view, deeply misleading. Any doctor or institution promising to “feminise” or “masculinise” the human body without changing its DNA is, in effect, deceiving you.
I believe this deception began early — in schools, through Relationship and Sex Education materials that claimed gender is fluid and that sex is “assigned at birth.” That is false. Sex is determined at conception, and by the seventh week of foetal development, it is already biologically clear whether a person is male or female. By teaching that doctors might have “assigned” you the wrong sex, these materials planted a dangerous idea — one that could easily take hold during adolescence, a time when self-doubt and confusion are common.
In my view, this was not education but indoctrination. Schools were instructed to hide these matters from parents — the very people best placed to support you through emotional confusion. This isolation mirrors the pattern seen in cult-like ideologies: separating young people from those who love them most. Once detached from parental guidance, vulnerable youth become easy targets for ideologues and, later, for those in medicine who profit from these falsehoods.
Sadly, some doctors, surgeons, endocrinologists and psychologists — knowingly or not — have become part of this system. Cross-sex hormones are being prescribed despite well-documented long-term complications. Surgeons have begun to perform irreversible operations on healthy bodies. When challenged, the professional institutions — Royal Colleges, GMC, NHS England, and the Department of Health — all pass responsibility between themselves. No one will say these surgeries are not deceptive. Yet none will take accountability either.
Let me be clear about what these procedures truly involve:
Vaginoplasty does not create a vagina. It creates a deep surgical slit-like narrow space lined with skin. It is a wound tending to heal and contract, not an organ. It lacks the glands, microbiome, glycogen-rich inner lining, acidic pH (to protect against infections) and natural functions of a female reproductive tract.
Phalloplasty does not create a penis. It forms a mound of skin and fat from another part of the body. It cannot perform erection, emission, or ejaculation — the defining functions of male sexual anatomy.
Mastectomy cannot make a female chest into a male one. It leaves irreversible scars and removes healthy breasts permanently leaving you incapable of lactation.
These are not restorative surgeries — they are destructive ones. In my opinion, they have the potential to turn healthy young people into lifelong patients, dependent on the medical system for repairs, revisions, and mental health support.
What you truly need is not surgery, but psychotherapy — compassionate, skilled counselling to help you understand and accept your biological reality. You deserve truth, not ideology. You deserve to be treated with honesty, not with the promise of impossible transformations.
I believe that within a few years, many of those who underwent these surgeries will express deep regret — but by then, it will be too late. Lost organs cannot be replaced. The physical and psychological scars are permanent.
I urge you: step away from the conveyor belt that starts in classrooms and ends in operating theatres. Parents and professionals across the world are now awakening to the dangers of gender ideology. Within the next few years this conveyor belt will be empty due to the alertness of current generation of parents. Accountability is coming. I believe, those who performed, assisted, promoted, or profited from these procedures will one day have to answer for them.
Thank you for reading this letter with an open mind. I write not to condemn you, but to protect you — before irreversible harm is done.
With sincerity and concern,
Dr. Joseph Chrysostom, MBBS, MS (Gen Surg), FRCSEd
GMC 5199143

Very frank and honest letter, I wonder who will publish it apart from SEEN, maybe the times and telegraph 🤔 They aren't my source of news but they seem to be pretty honest on this topic.
Unfortunately though, how will young people see this? They get everything they want from tiktok Instagram and Snapchat and if they've even slightly looked at GI content that's all they'll see.

AmberSpy · 08/10/2025 08:59

I'm quite sure that future generations will look back on this period of "affirming care" with utter amazement and incredulity.

Blinkingmarvellous · 08/10/2025 09:00

So true. He needs a tiktok....

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 08/10/2025 09:19

You should keep the link, and then the next time B pops up with a corrupted, activist study that's 'identifying' as science, claiming that the 'evidence' says blah blah blah, you can post that link for him to read.

BlueLegume · 08/10/2025 09:22

I heard a phrase used recently describing what has happened as ‘societal grooming’. I think the gender affirming carers flippantly throw around the ‘better a living (trans)son/daughter than a dead one. It is an awfully disingenuous turn of phrase.

For me whatever is going on or has been going on in schools/universities etc is counter to safeguarding.

@Greyskybluesky ah yes I did see that on Nick Wallis’ Gender Blog. I understand Dr Chrysostom has also written to the new Archbishop of Canterbury on the same subject.

Really? I'm so glad he's speaking out.

BlueLegume · 08/10/2025 09:31

@Greyskybluesky letter to the new Archbishop……..

I have written a letter to the newly appointed Her Grace Archbishop of Canterbury regarding the so-called sex reassignment surgeries-it is as follows:
Our Grace / Dear Archbishop of Canterbury,
Congratulations on your appointment to the position of Archbishop of Canterbury.
I write with grave concern about surgical procedures promoted as “gender-affirming care”—vaginoplasty, castration of normal young men, and phalloplasty—now performed on young people in psychological distress, often diagnosed with a mental health condition called “gender dysphoria” (DSM-5). Never in the history of medicine have such deliberate surgical mutilations been carried out on human beings with mental health conditions (described in DSM-5 psychiatry manual) by a handful of “surgeons”.
As a surgically trained medical professional myself, I must testify: these operations do not create new sexual organs. They destroy healthy structures like the penis and testicles in males, or the labia majora in females in perfectly normal young people causing irreversible harm. What is unfolding is both a medical and moral tragedy that calls for the Church’s clear voice.

  1. Vaginoplasty – A False Claim
This operation is presented as the creation of a “vagina”. In reality this operation involves stripping of the skin of penis, followed by trisecting the degloved penis longitudinally into three long strips (reminiscent of medieval quartering), calling it disassembly and then slicing across the base of the penis detaching it once and for all with a sharp surgical blade. Then they cut in between the urinary tract and the back passage and create a slit-like space where there is no natural space in an android male pelvis and call it a “vagina”. In reality, this is a deep surgical wound lined by skin. This structure should not be named as Vaginoplasty as it is clearly misleading the vulnerable adolescent youth. The correct terminology for this procedure will be “Perineal Woundoplasty” (indicative of a wound) or “Perineal Holoplasty” (indicating an artificial hole).

A natural female vagina is an elastic (lamina propria layer is rich in elastic fibres), moist, muscular canal with its own blood supply, glycogen-rich inner lining, lactobacillus flora creating an acidic pH, cervical secretions, and specialized nerves (vaginal plexus). By contrast, this surgical slit like cavity is a contracting wound with no lamina propria or elasticity, prone to infections, odour, and sepsis. To call this structure a “vagina” is profoundly misleading and deceptive.

  1. Phalloplasty – A Futile Substitute
Phalloplasty is described as giving an “anatomical and functional penis.” In truth: A flap of skin, fat, and tissue is taken from arm or thigh and shaped into a mound attached to the pubic area. No erectile tissue exists; natural erections are impossible. There is no emission, ejaculation phases as happens in a normal physiology of a true Penis of a Man. The surgically lengthened urethra often leads to strictures, fistulae, infections, and repeated interventions. These hitherto perfectly normal young people usually become lifelong urology patients. What results is not a penis, but a mound of skin and fat incapable of manhood’s natural functions.
  1. The Deception
Both procedures involve the removal of healthy, God-given organs and are falsely portrayed as creating the anatomy of the opposite sex. Consent obtained under such deception cannot be considered valid. This is not medicine, but mutilation—contrary to the healer’s oath to “first, do no harm.” Your Grace, as you are now to be ordained Archbishop of the holy Church, will you speak out against this deception and withhold any support that might allow it to continue? Children in some UK schools are now being taught that gender is fluid, that they may have been born in the wrong body, and that their true identity can differ from the reality recognised by themselves and their parents. This ideology has become a dangerous conveyor belt — beginning in the Relationships and Sex Education classrooms of our schools and ending on the operating tables of some urologists and plastic surgeons. Nowhere in the Gospel of our Lord is there any justification for such distortions of the truth. Will the Bishops of this nation rise to defend God’s creation — male and female — and bear clear witness to it?
  1. The Testimony of a Welsh Mother
Recently, a mother from Wales wrote to me in anguish over her son. I am sharing her exact words: “Thank you joseph, I believe my fight is over for **(her son’s first name), he had reached the top of the surgery list. I have been in the darkest place and can’t find my way out, my prayers are baron as I can’t think straight. I truly hope and pray that something will stop the NHS carrying out their evil very soon, before it is all too late. (Tearful Emoji)” The distressed Welsh mother says she has been in a darkest place and can’t find her way out, even posted a tearful emoji alongside her message. Her spelling and grammatical slips are entirely understandable, given the level of upset she was experiencing while typing. Her beloved son is about to undergo castration and penile amputation. She watches in despair, powerless as surgeons prepare to deal with him who is misled by ideology taught even in schools. Like countless suffering mothers across our land, she suffers as her child (now an young adult) is led to irreversible harm. The Welsh mother again wrote to me this week in WhatsApp as follows: “I am sorry for lack of communication, I am again grateful for being of help and to for your voice. I am not very with it at the moment but happy you have used this. It has affected all areas of our lives, including my own ability to hold down my full-time job, am exhausted and overwhelmed with it all Joseph. I am sorry to only now be getting back to you. I hope these words get heard because currently, I feel nothing but anger at the government for the **(not a swearing word) it is. Bless you. (folded hands emoji)” Her words speak for the continued agony and the desperation she is going through.
  1. The Witness of Scripture
The truth of the body is written in God’s Word: “Male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27) “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:13-14) “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit who is in you whom you have received from God. You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honour God with your bodies.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) Our tradition has upheld the integrity of the body and opposed mutilation. Jesus Christ Himself, even in His agony on the Cross, cared for His sorrowing Mother: “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother. “From that time on, this disciple took her into his home (John 19:26–27). In imitation of Jesus’ compassion, the Church must not remain silent while affected mothers all over this country weep as their so-called “trans” children and adolescents are medically and surgically mutilated. I am aware of many mothers similar to this Welsh mother across this country going through this agony. Will the bishops of this nation — both Anglican/Protestant and Catholic — show the same compassion to grieving mothers today as our Lord showed to His own Mother from the Cross?”
  1. A Call to Shepherds
Your voices as bishops are urgently needed. Silence now would be complicity. Young people are being deceived into irreversible mutilation, sterility, lifelong medical dependence, regret, and brokenness. I humbly appeal that you: Speak publicly and courageously against these mutilating surgical practices on physically normal human beings. Call on governments and medical bodies to halt them. Provide pastoral care for those in gender confusion explaining them regarding the invincibility of God’s creation as a Man and a Woman and telling them as to how beautiful they are in God’s own image. Support grieving parents, working toward reconciliation with their misled and sometimes estranged children/adolescent youth (18-25), some of them now are young adults (25-32) The Church must shine as a beacon of truth: the human body is not a mistake to be cut apart, but a gift from Almighty God with its perfection. With respect and urgency, Dr. Joseph Chrysostom MBBS, MS (Gen Surg), FRCSEd GMC 5199143.

Thanks @BlueLegume

The surgical descriptions make me wince a bit, but they certainly don't leave any room for misunderstanding!

Dragonasaurus · 08/10/2025 09:51

Thankyou to Doctor Chrysostom. This should be taught in PHSE in all senior schools and should be required reading for all trainee psychologists and social workers

MarieDeGournay · 08/10/2025 11:46

Dr Chrysostom [as pointed out on the other thread, his name means 'Golden Mouth'Smile] is such a valuable source of facts, those things that TRAs think are hateful and transphobic.

It was clever to quote scripture to the new A of C.
The Catholic church's unswerving opposition to trans ideology is based on respecting the body as given by the Creator [I'm not endorsing this, I just think it's interesting to see a philosophical argument from a very different angle against transgenderism]:
“the human body shares in the dignity of ‘the image of God. Such a truth deserves to be remembered, especially when it comes to sex change, for humans are inseparably composed of both body and soul. In this, the body serves as the living context in which the interiority of the soul unfolds and manifests itself, as it does also through the network of human relationships. Constituting the person’s being, the soul and the body both participate in the dignity that characterizes every human."
Dichiarazione del Dicastero per la Dottrina della Fede “Dignitas infinita circa la dignità umana”

DrBlackbird · 08/10/2025 23:28

He’s written 30 letters and not one medical or political body is willing to stop the mutilation of these children. Incredible. Interview in this article.

30 letters and no-one wants to know. Wow. Spineless fuckers.

BlueLegume · 09/10/2025 06:04

Thanks @DrBlackbird for the link to the substack. It is quite unbelievable that organisations whose very message is ‘do no harm’ are not reacting to these very well written letters of concern.

This does seem to be the new scandal of our times, think infected blood, Post Office Horizon scandal. Why are MSM so reluctant to highlight these things.

I remember Andrew Norfolk writing in the Sunday Times years ago about the grooming gangs - it barley made MSM and now these gangs are being tried and sentenced yet they barely make the headlines.

I cite the grooming gangs as the victims of them were often vulnerable young people. It seems the gender situation is also pulling in the most vulnerable.

Who will pay for the inevitable consequences?

When will they listen?

Well that's the point isn't it? Many of us (mostly women) have been shouting about this for years - straight into the void.
All it ever does it put a target on your back.
They know what they're doing. ( the government, The NHS ) But they don't like it being spelled out to them.

I doubt many so-called "trans kids" will ever see this latest letter and those that do will dismiss it as "hate" because that's what they've been brainwashed to do. As he himself says, the indoctrination starts early

All power to his arm for trying though. When this does eventually hit the fan, he has the receipts- they cannot say they didn't know.

What's the Archbishop supposed to do about it?!

Quoting scripture is amusing though - marshalling fairy stories against fairy stories.

The Archbishop could, if she chose to, have some positive influence on this matter within the Church of England. Your dismissive attitude doesn't remove the fact that the CofE has a lot of contacts with parents and children, through the parish system and through schools. The Archbishop can do a lot of good, or of course harm, depending on her views on transgenderism.

As for Joseph Chrysostom quoting the Bible to the Archbishop ... it's hardly surprising, as both of them are Christians. Just because you don't know the difference between faith and fairy stories doesn't mean that they can't communicate via a shared understanding of Christian texts.

BlueLegume · 10/10/2025 06:15

@Summerhillsquare perhaps the Archbishop could consider what is being taught in faith schools and whether the affirmation of unhappy or distressed children thinking changing gender, children being the important word here, is ethically and morally in line with the teachings of the Church of England.

Child protection now known as safeguarding has been around for a long time, updated when there have been high profile cases of failure to protect children. See this timeline and note the cases stated. At some point there will be an update based on gender disphoria…….I hope.

Also, there are bishops in the House of Lords.

Haemagoblin · 10/10/2025 06:38

Unfortunately this guy writes like Alan Partridge. The style is so risible that the content wouldn't get a look in, especially with the kids who have zero time for this sort of pomposity. It's almost a parody. Esp the letter to the Arch Bish where he holds up his Welsh mum's grammar errors and use of emoji with verbal tongs, and oh lord save us - "the true Penis of a Man" 🤣

He'd have been better off sticking to the science and leaving off the style imho.

Seriously? That is what you criticize him for, that he expresses himself clearly and precisely? If a kid that wants to go through life changing medical interventions can't be arsed to read this letter properly they are definitely not mature enough to make a decision about life changing medical intervention.

ProfessorRizz · 10/10/2025 06:57

He’s wrong, at least partially. It doesn’t start in classrooms (I’m a teacher and we are mainly gently pushing back against this narrative). It starts on the internet. It wasn’t a thing until everyone had social media.
