Welcome one and all - as the nights draw in, pull up a chair to the fire, and the gerbils will be along soon with hot chocolate and Tunnock’s teacakes.

This is reminding me of my visit to the UK in June, when my friend took my round her local churchyard to see a yarnbombing exhibition there.

Britinme · 10/09/2025 20:44

Dammit the photos didn't post! Ah well...

Sitting in corner listening to the chitter chatter, life has been very busy recently, and i have only been able to pop in and out.

I have an American cousin with quite a strong DNA link but neither of us could figure out how we are related, looking like her ancestor and my ancestor produced a child that was an extramarital situation.

We lost touch for a while but she has reconnected with me.

She is half Greek and has moved to Greece now.

I was a bit nervous about developing our relationship because i got stung in the past. A second cousin i had never met, used me to find out stuff she suspected and dumped me once she got what she wanted.

Anyway i e mailed her back and bit the bullet and explained Terf Island and being GC and what has happened in the UK.

Turns out that she is GC too, but not a Trump supporter and has been very active regarding the environment anti big pharma etc.

So i have been exchanging e mails with her.

Turns out she was married In too the Brubeck music dynasty, (i think Dan)

well i love the Brubeck quartet.

That's a great story Banned, I'm glad that it turned out to be a good contact this time, and a Brubeck connection too!Smile

I'm absolutely in awe. Knitted Spitfires!

Knitfires? That exhibition is brilliant!

MarieDeGournay · 10/09/2025 23:38

I have an acquaintance who is heavily into military history and all that - I've just sent him a link to the photo gallery, without explanation- I'd love to see his face when he realises that it's all knitted!😁
I love that people do completely daft but very highly skilled things like that, restores one's faith in humanitySmile

Oh, I'd love to see that, Marie.

ETA is it this? Court Martial: Soldiers Behind Bars - 2023 - Channel 5 Documentary

Edited

I can categorically say it's NOT this series, as we've just watched it.

I've also tried searching some dusty corners of the internet for my women in training one, with no luck.

Well for all of you knitters out there I took my DM to an exhibition today that showcased knitted panels and displays following the history of WW2. A few pics for you.

OMg! How fantastic. Where is this? [edited to say “ignore - I have caught up”]

Yay! It's coming close enough to visit! Planning it now: lunch, one of my favourite one-off shops & then the exhibition. Sadly, I think the yarn shop there has closed (ironically) but I Have Enough Yarn And Must Not Buy Any More anyway.

I've just learned there are no woodpeckers in Ireland!Shock

SionnachRuadh · 11/09/2025 12:17

There are all sorts of things Ireland doesn't have, not just snakes. There are no moles in Ireland either.

I blame St Patrick. Nothing will convince me otherwise. I don't see why tras get all the irrational belief systems.

SionnachRuadh · 11/09/2025 12:59

I have to admit to a fondness for Patrick, which has got less to do with patriotism than with having to read his Confession in school and discovering that, unlike some other ancient writers who I won't mention, he had a rather pleasing Latin prose style.

Apparently the gaps in Irish fauna are all the fault of the Ice Age

BBC NEWS | UK | Northern Ireland | Blindingly obvious... mole repellers useless

Flora and fauna. Spent many years studying this and the migration of plants and animals to places of refuge during glacial periods as part of my undergraduate degree. Have forgotten most of the detail but it was fascinating.

I think it's amazing that we can actually read St Patrick's story in his own words - I'll take your word about the Latin style, SionnachSmile
One of the earliest autobiographies? Along with St Augustine's? - that's just guesswork.

And being able to read the actual, hastily-written words of St Columbanus from the early 7th century:
Now as I write a messenger has reached me, saying that the ship is ready for me, ...If I am cast into the sea like Jonah, who himself is also called Columba in Hebrew, pray that someone may take the place of the whale to bring me back in safe concealment by a happy voyage, to restore your Jonah to the land he longs for.
But now my parchment letter is already forced to reach its end, though the greatness of my subject requires a more extensive treatment; love does not keep order, hence my missive is confused.
Smile
