Took it out of their centenary exhibition because the staff LGBT+ network kicked up a fuss. Craven. This really needs massive public challenge and push back - if the National Library isn't able to fend off the censors we are utterly lost. https://x.com/EthelWrites/status/1955390550494023958

But that is why, if we could come up with some kind of demo/read-in, it would be really good to do it at or near the NLS itself. Online is perhaps too easy to ignore. In person, with a good range of diverse people, is much more effective in saying ‘oi, we are here and we matter too’.

I agree but I am also thinking of the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, they had choirs in NI, Scotland and Wales, they showed them and then went back to the stadium.

It might be nice to reserve a copy from a local library and filming yourself reading the library copy(ies).

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 18/08/2025 08:25

@OhBuggerandArse Yes a read-in sounds great! I would like to do something that is local physical presence and small. It's a physical exhibition of physical books for people to come and visit. Could sit in the cafe or in the exhibition itself, maybe multiple sessions over a timeperiod? I do enjoy reading aloud.

The exhibition goes on all year as well as banned book week, so we don't have to do the whole book at once, readers could do it in bits and maybe tell each other where we've got to. The sky wont fall if we miss some out or repeat a bit or don't finish.

I'm not so fussed about recording or streaming. Selfies with the book in the exhibition / library steps / hallway?

This is all great. I still also really want the Led By Donkeys style projection on the outside of the building. I think photos would be really powerful.

And if (when) this project gets done can I suggest having it sent to them to add to the film / digital collections?

The whole idea is marvellous!

I agree this would also be powerful - images more easily translated to visual media

I think we probably have to wait and see what this week brings. A u-turn, I hope.

Some fab suggestions, really positive affirming action.

I think we should still do something regardless of whatever response NLS comes up with eventually. Hopefully it would turn out to be a celebration of the upholding of free speech - and footage archived for posterity.

Fantastic.

Exhibition runs until next January or February, I believe?

The NLS must be looking forward to the next few months.

Btw, am I the only person who thinks the cover would look great as a t-shirt?

Like this (give MN a moment) but better.

Unless it already exists.

Take a laundry marker. You could get it signed.

MarieDeGournay · 18/08/2025 18:55

Great news for readers in Ireland - Kenny's Bookshop has the paperback WWWW for €13.60/hardback €19.53!
This is a real bargain as all the other bookshops I looked at only stock the hardback, at €30.

I'm not on TwiX so don't know when to join in! Anyway I dropped in to the exhibition this afternoon and wrote a card.

lcakethereforeIam · 18/08/2025 19:53

I was hoping to go to Edinburgh at the beginning of October to see the Andy Goldsworthy exhibition. If I've time I could pop to the library?

Letters and cards for the rest of the year! Look, NLS! It's snowing!

Alison Nolan, chief executive of Slic, said the themes of this year’s awards would “ensure libraries continue to lead as trusted, inclusive spaces at the heart of every community”.

'while we continue to see libraries closed down at every turn, refuse to stock books that don't tally with our political views, and actively censor dissent'?

Not a single school library remains in my council area. They're closing many of the smaller municipal libraries. Some have been taken over by the community, many have 'downsized'.

They (general they) don't give a fuck about libraries or communities.

ArabellaScott · 18/08/2025 20:37

I swear when I see the word 'inclusive' these days, I shrink in my skin.

War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery.

Exclusion is Inclusion.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 18/08/2025 20:38

A sign on the wall from my visit today "Dear Reader, .... I will show you all sides of the argument. ... The Librarian"

Ah, promises, promises.

I expect I shall be in and out over the next few days to write some more cards.
