Welcome to the Bluestocking Arms, the home of good company, excellent drinks and delicious cakes which magically have no irksome contents like gluten or sugar or calories or the kind of alcohol that causes problems - but you wouldn't knowSmile

Food and drink are served by a keen staff of gerbils, and other animals such as capybaras, quokkas, etc., also fulfil vital roles, while looking cute AF.

New Bluestockingers always welcome.

@MyrtleLion , if you manage to knit enough pieces to reach 18” by 18”, so 9 x 6” squares, it could make a Little Hug. It doesn’t matter what yarn you use for that as long as it’s machine washable and can go in a (hospital) tumble dryer.

Yay, Myrtle!

I've just finished a red & white Granny square (football team colours) & a teddy bear face on blue (my first ever & I hope it's OK).

When I say red & white, I mean the specified red & off-white. I'm trying to follow the rules.

That's lovely!

I am just practising. I don't know how to cast off and I want to learn to purl as well. And I'm knitting using bamboo skewers 🤣😂😅

So at some point this will be cast off as a memento of my first knitting in 35 years. Once I'm happy with my stitches I will knit in earnest.

And I love the Little Hug, so maybe I will knit some squares from the two balls of cotton yarn that I have. I'm sure they are machine washable and I will wash a test square to check.

Dinner awaits but I will return & ask the Bluestocking poetry enthusiasts for the name of the poem this reminds me of.

The Owl and the Pussy Cat
a poem by Edward Lear

The Owl and the Pussy Cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money
Wrapped up in a five-pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
"O lovely Pussy, O Pussy, my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!"

Pussy said to the Owl, "You elegant fowl!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?"
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

"Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?" Said the Piggy, "I will."
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.

I could be totally wrong of course

I can do basic knitting, but pretty much only things that are rectangles. So the kids had a scarf each this winter, and I've made a couple of headbands. I'd love to make my own blanket, but the thought of stitching stuff together fills me with dread. Also, it would probably take me about 20 years at the rate I knit 😂

On the cat talk, I keep debating getting a cat. I'd love to have one, but then I think of the birds in my garden and cat vomit on the carpet and change my mind!

A storm blue shade sounds perfect.

I crochet and can usually get two squares out of a ball of Drops Merino, with a little bit left over.

Thank you all for the welcome yesterday, what a lovely corner of Mumsnet this is.

It is a lovely ( if sometimes weird) corner. I turn up my nose at all the " MN has gone all nasty" threads- these people just haven't found the Bluestocking yet.

But the cat will persuade you, and you will capitulate and agree, that those are the best bits of being owned by a cat.

Look at the little kitty.....

My cats live indoors, so unless the birds manage to squeeze though a narrow window opening they're safe from anything except having teeth chattered at them. I admit that damp and unpleasant offerings of hair sausages and worse are an occasional hazard.

Well yes i quoted from one of my favourite poems.

Boiledbeetle · 12/06/2025 20:16

AI has had another learning spurt. Today it's constantly asking me if I want to add a beetle or maybe some sort of gerbil regatta to my images.

Cats are better than kids. They don't whine.

I need "Catsnet".

SionnachRuadh · 12/06/2025 20:23

You have to take the rough with the smooth. Kids are probably less likely to boak in your shoe.

The poem is about two creatures fighting endlessly on a hill. One is noble & like a big cat, the other is brown & baggy. It should lose, but it doesn't & the fight goes on.

Goodness knows what the poem is, or why it seemed to be set time after time in Eng Lit in the 70s.

Not necessarily....

I'm very pleased to see one of my cats has been posting in Catsnet.

Things they would ask...
Are Lik-e-lix getting smaller
Aibu to always want the best bit of the sofa?
What's the best flavour of sky- raisin?
Dogs? Just why??

Bannedontherun · 12/06/2025 20:44

I think the owl and the pussycat fits in here so well
