Welcome to the Bluestocking Arms, the home of good company, excellent drinks and delicious cakes which magically have no irksome contents like gluten or sugar or calories or the kind of alcohol that causes problems - but you wouldn't knowSmile

Food and drink are served by a keen staff of gerbils, and other animals such as capybaras, quokkas, etc., also fulfil vital roles, while looking cute AF.

New Bluestockingers always welcome.

Well lucky, you i was rather hoping for a virtual love affair here but nothing happening, just swipes.

Do you think my profile is a tad prickly?

Try a new image - something like this might make you seem a bit more cuddly.

Oooh! I've just googled. I shall add Blue Beetle to my list of things I must watch at some point. I might pick up some tips on how to maximise my wings.

SionnachRuadh · 10/06/2025 00:24

I don't believe I'd even thought of Blue Beetle since reading Justice League International in the 1990s, but googling informs me that the movie is about a whole different Blue Beetle.

This is why I never quite got into DC. All the different Green Lanterns and all the different Robins.

Morning, Stockingers, I hope you are well as poss this morning.
I should have come straight to the Bluestocking, I read a few other threads first and now feel so out of sync with the world - and that's just FWR, AIBU does my head in so much I never read it now😕
Well I admit that sometimes the title looks irresistible and I give in to temptation.

So a large cup of your finest black tea, please gerbils, with sugar and the high-octane milk I can't have in real life.
And of course a biscuit or something - in Ireland 'a cup in the hand' is always [well, traditionally, heaven knows how Gen Z serve 'a cup in the hand'Grin] accompanied by a biscuit or a slice of brack or something.

My theory is that Irish tea blends are very strong, and the tea is brewed strong, so you need something to balance that flavour and oomph..

Ah there you are gerbils! thank you so much Gunnilda, that looks perfectly brewed. And Georgiana with a plate of biscuits? Too kind!Smile

I don't like tea.
I have one cup a day of extremely weakEarl Grey and I don't know why I bother with that!

But if the gerbils could bring me a calorie free apple doughnut I'll happily join you Marie.

Oh, cheers Gertrude. 🍩 🍩 🍩

SionnachRuadh · 10/06/2025 10:30

I would quite like a drop in my hand right now, but I'm afraid I'm all out of both milk and Tunnock's.

Lemon squash it is, then... 🙄

As for tea ... I know a number of people who don't drink tea, or coffee, or any hot drinks! Astonishing!

My sprogs don't drink tea! One day I'll have their DNA checked. I wouldn't be surprised if I'd brought the wrong ones home from the hospital. At least one of them likes mushy peas.

That tea is perfect Gidget. And a biscuit? Well, it'd be rude not to.

MyrtleLion · 10/06/2025 11:29

My DSD doesn't drink hot drinks. We've had to stop her drinking caffeinated soft drinks because it sent her blood pressure sky high. So she has fanta and squash.

Currently my view. Atlantic Ocean.

I have a coffee mug that holds about 700ml of coffee. I don't drink it all at once - it lasts me most of the day, and if there's any left at dinner time, dh confiscates it. He can't comprehend my liking for cold coffee.

I'm all on my own today - dh has gone to London for meetings, and was out for the 4.28 train this morning. The cleaners are coming later, but after that, I'm going to set myself up in my comfy chair, and watch rubbish on TV.

Magpiecomplex · 10/06/2025 12:29

I don't get on with caffeine, hence my usual order for hot chocolate. Been banging heads together all morning and will continue this afternoon, so Georgie, Georgia, Georgina and Georgiana need to start warming up the hot chocolate pool now please.

Magpiecomplex · 10/06/2025 12:36

Jealous, moi?

ErrolTheDragon · 10/06/2025 12:37

I have 2 large mugs of tea first thing and then a coffee later I’m having an extra latte now though, having a walk while waiting for a car to be serviced.

my dd brought a large selection of teas with her when they were chucked home from uni in 2020. And as befitting someone born and bred in Lancashire she likes mushy peas, to southern DH’s mild horror.

My DH has a strong liking for pie. He is a Northerner. I am the horrified southerner.

At least two pots of cardamom tea every day - I have a pot and cup combo - sometimes three. Then water for the rest of the day.

Here on holiday, strong coffee with breakfast then pina coladas, beer, cava, red and white wine, martinis, negronis etc. Currently sangria on the catamaran.

Normal service will return from Thursday.

MarieDeGournay · 10/06/2025 13:13

Oh wow, Myrtle, that looks beautiful, and I'm so glad you are having such a great hols.
AND don't forget that lovely watch awaits you when you have to go homeSmile

I can't drink much tea any more, because for me 'tea' = black tea [not herbal which is a 'tisane' or and 'infusion' to me, so not even remotely 'tea'] with full-fat milk and sugar. There are elements in that which are off-limits these days, but I can just about tolerate low fat milk now, so I allow myself a cuppa or two.

I had to give it up completely for a few months years ago, and it was so difficult, because it's not just the little caffeine buzz and the distinctive taste, it's also the emotional and cultural and dare I say gendered significance of
'I'll put the kettle on' 'Will I put your name on the pot?' 'Sure you'll have a cup in the hand anyway!' 'Here, have a nice cup of tea, you'll feel better'
and of course 'Ah go on go on go on go on go on go on....'

In my world, nothing compares...Smile

Im so glad you’re having a lovely time, especially after them mucking you about initially. Envy of the catamaran (envy not seasickness!)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/06/2025 13:35

That view looks amazing, @MyrtleLion - I am green with jealousy!!

It is actually sunny here - though being Scotland, it could be snowing by teatime. 😂

FuzzyPuffling · 10/06/2025 14:45

Pie.
Pie is the Nectar of the gods.
I am northern.

SionnachRuadh · 10/06/2025 14:49

I've heard that in Wigan, people perform terrible rituals before giant graven images of pies.

From a similar latitude but the other side of the Irish Sea, I have a similar attitude towards the pastie bap and the sausage soda.

FuzzyPuffling · 10/06/2025 15:13

Are there any gerbils/quokkas/capybara who can provide me with an "English to Irish idiom" translation service please?
Pastie bap? Pots with names on? Sausage soda?

No idea.

Magpiecomplex · 10/06/2025 15:18

I did a double take at sausage soda and then realised it's probably soda bread, not soda water. 😂

Magpiecomplex · 10/06/2025 15:20
