Here at the Bluestocking there's a place for all women. A break from Reality, and many laughs and stories to share. Have your fill of Tunnocks bars and tea cakes, sing feminist anthems, drink as much beer or gin or hot chocolate as you desire. It won't make you fatter or drunken but oh, it's fun. Sit in the garden with our Lion resident or the Quokkas and Capybara. Express your opinions loudly in Pedantry Corner. Ask for whatever you fancy to be served by our obliging Gerbil staff. Come in, all women, welcome!

@AsWithGlad oh no - you are right AQA and OCR don’t do A2s any more! 😭 🤯 😱

AsWithGlad · 20/04/2025 19:25

Nor EDEXCEL/Pearson.

Possibly (Wales) though.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/04/2025 19:58

It may not be perfect but sounds like a good approach to ‘second chances’ for those that need it.
I suppose there may have been downsides to AS but there were some definite pros - DD got through her A levels under the old system and so was able to do the ‘start four, drop one’ which is still recommended if they want to do FM, but could get an AS rather than nothing(well, other than a years teaching, education isn’t really about bits of paper!) in the one she dropped.

There is a thread about the men who stood up for women's rights and someone mentioned Tunnocks as resisting the TWAW ideology.

It makes me so proud of the love for Tunnocks at the Bluestocking!

Is that why?

Happy Easter!

I’ve had a fairly decent Easter Sunday. One of the crew organised an Easter egg hunt this morning, which was quite creative for a burly pirate. I was quite a good hunter and ended up with a bottle of wine (now part way through), a candle (burning away beside me) and a paper cone of sweets (yep, I’ve just scoffed them).

Then a walk along a beach in the sun this afternoon with the hound. Followed by ice cream.

Later popped into a local tavern to meet friends for soft drinks (as it was in the afternoon, and I don’t like daytime drinking).

Now chilling in my quarters on a calm sea. With the rest of the wine.

Marvellous conversations today. I'd forgotten everything I knew about Ibsen, except that not a single one of his plays was appreciated or enjoyed when it was first put on stage.

Live Theatre can be an incredibly rich experience - but it so often isn't. I was thinking how ironic it is that Ibsen, whiskery old radical that he was, wrote about ordinary domestic life in such withering terms, critiquing the patriarchal system, and introducing "realism" to the stage, but now a woman playwright has rewritten what may be regarded as his masterpiece, updated and (post)modernised, only to repeat the same mistakes of structure and story and character and motivation that he made. The updating seems to make the play even less appealing to audiences.

I went to see an amateur production of a musical play recently, with low expectations, and was thrilled by its brilliance from start to finish. We're not in London, so the investment in going was much lower. Then again, the previous week I saw a supposedly professional outfit perform something SO BAD it was beyond belief.

Can I get a large full fat coke and a packet of pork scratching please bar gerbil.

I'm knackered! All day I spent entertaining the gerbil children. I think we need to check which gerbils aren't taking their pills, otherwise by next Easter we'll all be dressing up to amuse them whilst they are hyped up on sugar!

I'm sorry Boily, magpies don't do entertaining children, even if you put us in a silly wig... Now, if you need anyone to quell the hyper ones and instill a lifelong fear of clowns, I'm your girl.

Yep.

I've had a very busy day in RL, and a mildly annoying one on MN. Idiots on threads (not you, Myrtle: not knowing and being a fool are very different things). My tolerance of (what I consider to be) idiocy diminishes as I age. I blame the menopause. My maternal desire to just smooth things over and make everyone happy switched off when I was about 50, and poor DH still sometimes looks astonished at the New Model Bolshy Edith.

The gerbils have seen those pictures and want to say they’re very very sorry and they’d rather have to watch Ibsen than ever meet any of you thus attired.
Colin isn’t sure if he’d feel compelled to drag the wigs off you and shred them or cower whimpering behind me.

I'm like one of those Victorian children forced to pose for a photograph.

MarieDeGournay · 20/04/2025 22:57

Belated Easter greetings, I see there has been a typically Bluestocking diversity of celebrations, from the religious to ....the other kinds of stuff we get up to!

I too have spent quite a bit of time on other threads, Edith.
There are some awful eejits in the real world, aren't there? thank heavens for MN and esp FWR, where eejitry is challenged with wit and enthusiasmSmile

And then there's the Bluestocking💙

I really like your clown image, Myrtle - it looks like a comment on the nobility of Nature being demeaned by humans - just look at the pained dignity in the eyes.

Inky, your theatre full of bored gerbils watching Ibsen is genius!
They rank alongside the Foucault-addled grievance gerbils:
The Ibsen-fatigued theatre gerbils😄

MarieDeGournay · 20/04/2025 23:00

My post crossed with Inky's, which also finds your clown portrait has dignity, Myrtle.

ADDERS!!🐍

Wow!? That fettled them. A weeks poor service? In these circumstances, totally worth it.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/04/2025 23:30

Do gerbils and adders not get on well together or something, Cake? I'm not sure I understand why it's a threat...
And if I don't find out before I go to bed, I'll be wondering about it while trying to go to sleep😕
