Here at the Bluestocking there's a place for all women. A break from Reality, and many laughs and stories to share. Have your fill of Tunnocks bars and tea cakes, sing feminist anthems, drink as much beer or gin or hot chocolate as you desire. It won't make you fatter or drunken but oh, it's fun. Sit in the garden with our Lion resident or the Quokkas and Capybara. Express your opinions loudly in Pedantry Corner. Ask for whatever you fancy to be served by our obliging Gerbil staff. Come in, all women, welcome!

The Tokens:

Tight Fit:

I love this song.
I was brought up on this version, sung by the incomparable Miriam Makeba.

I'm curious as to where the rest of the body is Magpie!! Did you just find the foot in a field or...?

Well known scavengers, magpies. Saw one on a country road today, pecking at a carcass.

lcakethereforeIam · 26/04/2025 21:13

Taking youngest back to Uni and stopped off at the Dyfi Osprey project. The female osprey is incubating three eggs, expected to hatch in mid-May.

I asked what they'd called her and they told me, 'that would be tellin'.

Overheard some people talking about the verdict, Harry Potter boycotts by the youngsters🙄, but also those women were very brave! 😃

just - exercise scepticism wrt things venerable locals might tell you.

Oh, that. I’m very good at skepticism, fortunately.

Real life has come crashing in a bit this week so I wasn’t around in The Blue Stocking last night or today. Please tell the gerbils I’m missing them.

I’m going to a party tonight so won’t be around this evening either. A party in a cabin, with fire pit, barbecue, alcohol. I’m usually extremely unsociable but I’m looking forward to it 😊.

I am slightly worried. When you say 'cabin' do you mean a bucolic structure or do you mean a ship's cabin?

It would be madness to have a firepit or a barbecue anywhere near a ship's cabin. Please assure me?

Moving on, I had a perfectly wonderful afternoon in the Bluestocking. Obviously, the Mearsault was perfectly chilled and perfectly delivered by the Maitre D' gerbil. And the seafood salad was heaven on a plate .

We are so lucky.

I'm feeling a bit quiet and tired, so if any gerbils want to take ( peaceful) refuge with me, they are welcome to a snooze in my puffin-burrow.
I promise there won't even be a sneaky game of Snap.

Poker however...

We might be going there tomorrow, is there something I should know?

I was just renewing a little dispute between the Celtic church and the Roman church about how to calculate the date of Easter, at the Synod of Whitby in 644.
Unfortunately it was Roma 1 Celtic 0 back then, so we're up for a re-matchGrin

I was going to be a smart-arse and ask
'What were you doing, pecking at carcasses on a country road, Edith??'
but I won'tGrin

As a magpie fan, I'm often challenged about the horrors of magpies pecking at carcasses, and often going for the eyes first..

These mapgpie-ist comments often come from meat-eaters who are not averse to pecking at carcasses themselves🙄, and I patiently explain that the eyes are particularly rich in nutrients, and as there may be only a short window of opportunity to feed, it is logical to go for the most accessible, most nutritious part of the body first, that is the eyes. It's all very sensible, it's not nasty at all...

Strangely, nobody ever says 'Oh that explains it! Of course, that makes perfect sense. You've completely changed my opinion! Aren't magpies and other scavenging animals lovely?'
Sorry magpies, I'm doing the best PR job i can!Smile

It took me a while, and involved going back a page or two to a post about a baby osprey/what is its name/ that would be ..telling/Telyn.

I can't even find the post now, though I had a good look, so if you haven't total recall of past posts, your un-dropped-penny state is entirely understandable InkySmile

Or was it our Mission Statement?

DH is a Liverpool fan and it is 90% likely they will score at least one point in their match this afternoon to make them Premiership Champions.

The last time they won the Premiership it was the lockdown of 2020. The time before that was 1989-1990. So he hasn't celebrated in 35 years. And when they win this year they will equal Manchester United's record of 20 titles.

But he didn't want to get the beers in or go to the pub, despite me saying this was historic.

We then had a conversation about our lives and how we have a great life, despite the very difficult year we've been through and my continuing unemployment (mostly due to the lack of a magic penis). We've spent the last three and a half years losing a lot of weight - 8 stone between us - and that means not drinking much (holidays, Christmas and job interviews excepted). And how life is for living.

So he announced at breakfast that he agreed life is for living and we will continue to lose weight over the year and he was going to buy Heineken (the manager, Arne Slot is Dutch) and some prosecco!

AIBU to be annoyed because I'm losing weight this week, we're drinking next weekend because it's a bank holiday and my BFF is coming to stay, and I'll probably put weight on? 🤔 And if IANBU should I LTB?

Swashbuckled · 27/04/2025 14:24

Just to reassure those of you who were a little worried, I am alive. I was inebriated, but not incinerated.

There were two fire pits; one outside and one inside the cabin. It is a grand cabin, with a bar area and a seating area covered with reindeer hides. The cabin fire pit is built into the centre, professionally equipped, and we cooked the meat in the middle while we all sat around it. (Sorry to the vegetarians.)

I am feeling fragile today as it was a late night. Tonight is my regular night out in the village, but I may need to stick to soft drinks. Anyway, I raised a glass to you all ❤️.

Well, he’s certainly BU to buy Heineken when there are Dutch beers which are actually worth drinking. But from other things you’ve said, he’s a keeper so I’d let him off with a yellow card (whatever that may mean).

Magpiecomplex · 27/04/2025 16:57

Right, where's that hot chocolate bowser? And the foot massaging quokka (preferably sans disembodied feet)? I've done my duty, and I'm now home, feeling slightly hoarse, quite achy, and very warm. Also sticky from the suncream.

MarieDeGournay · 27/04/2025 16:59

Liverpool is the only team I give two hoots about, I like that they seem more like a family than a club, and I'll give a third hoot today if they clinch the title and I'll raise an imaginary glass with Myrtle's DH.
YNWA.

I'm amused by the fact that their last two managers, Klopp and Slot, sound like onomatopoeiac words in a Scandinavian languageGrin

Swash - glad you survived, I was afraid to ask ... Smile
