Here at the Bluestocking there's a place for all women. A break from Reality, and many laughs and stories to share. Have your fill of Tunnocks bars and tea cakes, sing feminist anthems, drink as much beer or gin or hot chocolate as you desire. It won't make you fatter or drunken but oh, it's fun. Sit in the garden with our Lion resident or the Quokkas and Capybara. Express your opinions loudly in Pedantry Corner. Ask for whatever you fancy to be served by our obliging Gerbil staff. Come in, all women, welcome!

Probably my fault for not dropping into the Bluestocking this evening. DH met me off the train from London. We picked up a Ruby Murray on the way home. I had a serious G&T while having a shower (brilliant shower design) and then ate Ruby washed down with lager. I will be down the Bluey tomorrow; promise.

<looks around>
VERY quiet in here tonight. Gerbil staff playing Scrabble in the corner and arguing over speling spellin spelling because Geraldine swears blind that it's 'swimzuit' and therefore she gets a triple word score including the z.

Gosie (her parents couldn't spell either) has gone to find the dictionary, which is somewhere in the scriptorium under piles of parchment.

I've poured my own whisky and am refusing to get involved.

I actually offered them a dictionary and they just went quiet and glared at me, so I've left them to it.

They look as though they’re enjoying themselves, bless their little paws and bright eyes.

Just nipped over to the Staunch Ally to pick up the gerbils who'd been to visit their boyfriends (can't be letting them stay over we know what that leads to) and it makes me eternally grateful for the Bluestocking

Scrabble tiles all over the floor this morning, and the scorched remains of a dictionary in the fireplace.

Also some graffiti on the hearth saying 'Gosie iz a bich' and 'zuit zuit zuit'.

The bar staff serving breakfast claimed they 'hadn't noticed' and 'went to bed early last night'. No sign of Geraldine. Time for some gentle words with her, I think.

EdithStourton · 26/04/2025 08:07

Also graffiti on the way to the gerbils' living quarters, placed to be read as they head down to work:

REMMEBER NONE LIKES A SNICH

Igneococcus · 26/04/2025 08:11

Scrabble can do that to people, and gerbils it seems.

FuzzyPuffling · 26/04/2025 09:28

I feel sad for the gerbils. They always seemed such a cheerful bunch. 😞

EdithStourton · 26/04/2025 09:47

I had a quiet word with Geraldine. She blamed the vodka, had a cry and apologised to Gosie.

I suggested she might want to wash off the graffiti and Gosie promptly offered to help. Several others joined in, Georgia collected all the Scrabble tiles and order is restored.

Just keep Geraldine off the strong stuff in future. Poor thing has a terrible headache and has crawled back to bed.

FuzzyPuffling · 26/04/2025 10:02

Maybe the gerbils need a Gerbil Festival Day ( alcohol free) to thank them for all their hard work in looking after us?

The link isn't the same as the photo - different bloke, no t-shirt, different pig wearing different sunglasses - wait, did I just type
'different bloke, no t-shirt, different pig wearing different sunglasses '?
One for the collection!

I thought it was funny, I loved hearing the Retro Disco
Born to Be Alive song again, and the animals seemed to be enjoying themselves a lot.

If this is what they get up to in the Staunch Ally, they have risen in my estimation - I thought they stood around drinking obscure real ales and discussing in excruciating detail the relative merits of different brands of duct tape and that kind of thing..

Heeeyyyy! Party on dudes! And animals! 🤘
Born born to be alive
Yes we were born born to be alive
😎

But like you, Boily, I'm so glad to be in the BluestockingSmile

Igneococcus · 26/04/2025 10:07

Going by personal experience, don't add Talisman to the boardgame stash, more than 20 years later the word Prophetess still plays havoc with my blood pressure.

Magpiecomplex · 26/04/2025 10:10

I'm working both days this weekend, can someone warn one of the less hungover gerbils to start filling the hot chocolate bowser please?

ErrolTheDragon · 26/04/2025 10:14

Something needs adjusting in the bluestocking reality modulators - if we can partake of its alcohol, chocolate etc with no ill effect, why are the poor gerbils suffering?

Magpiecomplex · 26/04/2025 11:10

I think we probably need to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow in the flux capacitors, @ErrolTheDragon, that should do it. I doubt anyone thought the gerbils might be drinking, when the original reality modulators were designed.

Magpiecomplex · 26/04/2025 11:11

Hopefully that'll do the trick.

In was watching the funeral and thinking that maybe seeing everyone exchanging the sign of peace would be good for them. Then my internet went down.

That gave me time to remember their Mongolian origins and that mixture of Buddhism and Shamanism that might not welcome new religions being held up as good examples.

So instead I set them a team-building exercise of stopping an inundation using sticks, spoons, and a ball of string.

The bus took them down to the beach and will collect them after 90 minutes, which will give them half an hour after the tide turns to congratulate themselves and each other on their cleverness and power over the elements.

It is causing hilarity in some quarters.

After the issues with speeling and discionaries, could everyone just not mention Cnut.

Ladies and Gentleman, on behalf of Captain Tempest and his crew may we welcome you aboard Routine Scientific Survey Flight Nine.

Before we enter into an outgoing take-off scenario it is space fleet command regulations that we take you through emergency procedures.

Firstly, may we respectfully point out that the use of all audio visual recording devices, including flash photography, is strictly prohibited on board this flight.

Secondly, may we point out the emergency exits. They are located here, here and here.

In the event of cabin decompression, oxygen masks will come down from the overhead compartments. Place them over your mouth and nose and breathe normally.

Finally the POLARITY REVERSAL DRILL. If you look below you/ahead, you will see the Klystron Generator.

On it is marked "KLYSTON GENERATOR. DANGER. DO NOT REVERSE POLARITY"

Polarity reversal is a very dangerous procedure that's why we tell you not to do it. However, in the unlikely event of entering a polarity reversal situation, we ask you to follow this simple drill:

I was overwhelmingly tired yesterday and went to bed at 9pm, sleeping till 2am and then getting back to sleep at 5.30am till 9.30am. And no alcohol since last Saturday. This happens occasionally so it meant I was absent from the Bluestocking.

Maybe if I had been there a tiny but fierce snarl might have kept order. If so, my apologies. But the lion sleeps tonight was playing...

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/04/2025 13:17

At any moment, the urge to sing The Lion Sleeps Tonight is only a whim away.

Stop!!! I’ve given up wearing tenalady pants (for fear I may get hit by a car it will be all they talk about at my funeral) and I’m not sure the liners are robust enough for me to PMLMAO.
