Here at the Bluestocking there's a place for all women. A break from Reality, and many laughs and stories to share. Have your fill of Tunnocks bars and tea cakes, sing feminist anthems, drink as much beer or gin or hot chocolate as you desire. It won't make you fatter or drunken but oh, it's fun. Sit in the garden with our Lion resident or the Quokkas and Capybara. Express your opinions loudly in Pedantry Corner. Ask for whatever you fancy to be served by our obliging Gerbil staff. Come in, all women, welcome!

Ermmm, I have online access to that. The whole book is 324 pages without the 16 page Index and 26 page Bibliography. There’s no mention in the Index of ”tooth” or “dance”.

The 36 page Introduction will be my bedtime reading, but I’ve spotted the idea that fairies are “diminished gods”, which goes towards explaining an academic study of them.

Below are the chapter subheadings, which make more sense to me than the chapter headings.

  1. Understanding Godlings
  2. Godlings in Roman Britain
  3. Godlings and Christianisation
  4. Godlings in Early Medieval Britain
  5. Godlings in Later Medieval Britain

(I trust just giving the subheadings is fair use.)

Thank you for the information about the P word. I've always seen it as quite innocuous before.

Would we be deleted for referring to the P line on a ship?

Maybe the p word isn’t allowed but the P one is?
Maybe someone could mention it in maritime conversation with Swashbuckled and see what happens.
Not me, I’m not a rule-bender. (which autocorrect wants to change to ‘gender’)

Then what happens if you start a sentence with the footwear word, so it has to be capitalised?

AsWithGlad · 23/04/2025 01:06

Addition to post at 00:50. The Index doesn’t mention ‘teeth’, either

DeanElderberry · 23/04/2025 07:41

There must be a reason for that - Francis Young is a professional indexer, so it can't be a careless error. Possibly the subject is so sacred that mentioning it on something as solid as paper might offend.

I read his tweets, and he has a fascinating range of expertise and a way of wearing his learning lightly. I find it very interesting that he didn't go into the university end of the academic system, but has managed to lead a very productive scholarly life outside it. The book is in the 'proper hardback' price range rather than the 'academic rip-off' range. His next one is coming out in a couple of months and is on Baltic paganism.

If he ever shows up at the Staunch Ally I'll send him over a pint - maybe he could be persuaded to stand under the window of Pedantry Corner and regale us with tales of indexing.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/04/2025 08:43

As a denizen of the Discworld I’m very familiar with the small gods, tooth fairies etc.

AsWithGlad · 23/04/2025 10:17

@DeanElderberry , I think I’m reading the right book. I only got a few pages into the Introduction before falling asleep (not the book’s fault) but am enjoying it so I’ll keep going.

Last night's chat inspired me. This morning I have made salmon fishcakes...with parsley!

Swashbuckled · 23/04/2025 10:56

Well, poor Millie has been officially declared “lost”. They are sending a replacement, which should arrive tomorrow.

I’m not sure how to feel about poor Millie. I am trying to imagine she is somewhere pleasant. Perhaps she has eloped and set off into the sunset with an emotionally compatible toaster. All I want is to know that she is happy. Of course, I never will know for sure. But I must imagine she is, if only to reduce my own suffering.

Swashbuckled · 23/04/2025 11:01

I am trying to imprint this image in my thoughts, for peace of mind.

I heard Millie had eloped with the toaster as Millie had a bun in the oven!

Oh, thanks @Boiledbeetle

That’s a lovely way to think of her. ❤️

You are cordially invited to the wedding of Millie and Morphy Richards 💒.

Though feck knows what'll be on the wedding list!

Can't go wrong with fine china and expensive bed linens! One of the guests at our wedding gave us a pair of baking trays - the ones with holes in for good air flow. Not something I would ever have asked for, and they've never been used.

I think the universe reads the Bluestocking threads. My washing line just broke.

Boiledbeetle · 23/04/2025 12:13

It's twins!!

It is possible that Milly and Morphy would like people to give money to a charity of their choice - the Retired Pirates' Benevolent Fund, or the Old Microwaves Repurposing and Recycling Trust, perhaps?

I'm currently telling myself I do NOT need shaun the sheep toilet roll holders.

I'm going to cave at some point I just know it!

Turns out microwave + toaster pregnancys are carried by both parents. So one popped up and one pinged when ready.

Every day is a school day at the Bluestocking.

I'd use them. I do a lot of baking (a cake and some biscuits in the past fortnight).

Isn't there! I will admit I only noticed once I'd pressed post!

lcakethereforeIam · 23/04/2025 13:56

Another weird coincidence, I was looking for a scrap of paper to copy a recipe out on and I found the first draft of the first poem I submitted for vol.2 of UTDOD!

I think the twin on the right takes after Morphy.

I have a box full of UTDOD crap. I think I've collected everything up and then I'll find another pile of crap to sort and there will be the first half of a poem that came to me at 3 in the morning! At some point I will sort it all out. (Probably not, but will probably all be sat in the same state in the same box in 2045!)
