Women's rights general conversations - Thread 10

Continuation of Thread 9.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

I was talking to a shop assistant earlier. He was a tall man with broad shoulders, hairy hands and a decent sized beard. He had a male name.

He also had he/him pronouns on his badge. What is the point? Nobody in their right mind might mistake him for a woman.

I fell across this article trying to remember where I'd seen Lee Pace before (The Fall). I discovered he'd also played a trans sexual (that's the word he used) in a film, Soldier's Girl. A film I'd never heard of. A true story of a US soldier who was murdered by one of his comrades. Murder motivated, at least in part, by a relationship the victim, Barry Winchell, was in with a TiM

This article was published in 2000. It's interesting as so many of the elements of gender ideology are there. Including the internal homophobia of the TiM, the use of 'female', etc. The homophobia of the US army is quite overt. The murder is horrific. The TiM comes across as very 'me, me, me'. I suppose that could be because he's the subject of the interview. He seems to have done quite well since the murder. The excuse for not meeting his murdered beloved parents seems paper thin.

Lee Pace was a snooty elf in the Hobbit films, painted blue in Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel, and the pie maker in Pushing Daisies, which was an enjoyably odd TV show with Anna Friel about 15 years ago.

I’ve wondered if it’s a bit of a flex combined with “look at how considerate I am, telling you about my inherit manliness.”

Though I was once at a conference and one of the speakers was a tall, broad shouldered, bearded and manly bloke who popped a quick incidental He/They on his slides. And I wondered how we were meant to parse that as an audience - he’s just manly on the outside? He’s nicer than the average tech chap? He has a feminine-coded hobby? It was quite distracting given he was talking about cyber security.

He’s also the ‘Brother Day’ Cleons in Foundation and one of the lead characters in Halt and Catch Fire which I heartily recommend. Its wiki page describes it as a ‘period drama’ - which makes anyone engaged in software development during the 80s and 90s and who has peek’d and poke’d a Commodore 64 feel very old. Despite the initial dominance of Pace’s —eyebrows— character it’s the female characters who really make this series.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/11/2025 10:22

I’m not sure I’ve ever come across a bloke with he/him pronouns who didn’t have a beard.Confused There aren’t many pronoun people in our org, mainly just some of UK HR and one or two male managers who probably think (for a minimal value of ‘think’) they’re being ‘inclusive’.

lcakethereforeIam · 26/11/2025 10:38

He has got amazing eyebrows.

Not seen either of those, but Halt and Catch Fire sounds right up my street, although I was more of a Spectrum 48K girl than a Commodore 64 fan. And it's on ITVX, so that's added to the list after I've finished watching The Serpent Queen. Thank you.

Perhaps more pertinently, what the hell is up with men*?

Earlier this year, a judge ordered a divorcee to pay half of her ex-husband's £160,000 trans surgery bill.

Say what now?! I don't remember hearing about this before, had it come up on MN?

Yeah, it was in the Mail link. No surprises there!

I think an appeal would use a comparison of cosmetic surgery for his wife.

But they've paid over £1 million in lawyers' fees so I'm not sure she's going to notice a missing £80k.

I know it's the principle...

A magistrate has been reprimanded for associating herself with views that could be considered transphobic.

"...a complaint was made to the regional advisory committee after Taylor had shared a YouTube video in a parish council WhatsApp group containing commentary that could be considered transphobic. When a member of the group expressed concern, Taylor replied that the video was about single-sex provision and did not concern transgender issues."

This looks dodgy as fuck.

I hope this gets lots of coverage. Shocking. Joshua Rozenberg is pretty high profile, I remember when he presented Law in Action for R4 and he’s often interviewed by them and similar outlets on legal matters.

Is there a thread specifically on this?
Can't see one, but thinking it would be good to have one?

Not yet, I can't come up with a decent title at the moment. If you can think of one please start a thread!
