Women's rights general conversations - Thread 10

Continuation of Thread 9.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Thanks for that, CriticalCondition. Yet another case of people not listening to those who do actually know what they're talking about.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 10/11/2025 09:38

Sounds like they just made it up as they went along. Daley looks ridiculous in that thing.

lcakethereforeIam · 10/11/2025 09:58

The BBC had an article yesterday about some blokes who've started knitting. Women barely got a mention. Suddenly a man does it and it's news worthy. They'll even build a program around it.

Doesn't Daley have form for this? Didn't he rent a woman and buy her child?

SqueakyDinosaur · 10/11/2025 10:04

Yes he did. He was also very vocal about transwomen being included in sports (he was all for it, but seems to have gone a bit quiet on the subject recently).

Is that meant to be a cable knit jumper in the picture? He's made a right pig's ear of the plaited sections at the bottom.

CriticalCondition · 10/11/2025 10:59

And the loose ends. My work is far from perfect but then I don't wear it on national TV with an arrogant smirk.

He didn't knit that shawl thing.

Margaret Mead was an early 20th century anthropologist who studied small tribal villages in southern Africa.

She discovered two villages around 10-20 miles from each other, both of which had knitting cultures. In one village, knitting was women's work and was felt to be necessary for garment making for the villagers. It was disdained by men who refused to have anything to do with it except wearing the garments (and presumably whingeing if there was anything wrong with them).

In the other village, knitting was solely done by men. It was considered almost holy and precious and women were not allowed anywhere near the knitting, particularly if theywere menstruating. Possibly they weren't even allowed to wear the garments.

Mead concluded that in both cultures, it wasn't about the knitting, but about the knitters and male knitters were more revered than female ones.

Plus ça change...

lcakethereforeIam · 10/11/2025 13:48

I remember a series of ads for Shreddies. I think the tag line was 'knitted by Nanas'. There was one that featured the boss, a man! Really annoyed me.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 11/11/2025 10:49

What a depressing read. Women so threatened that they feel they have no choice but to leave public life. Try 'growing a thicker skin' when people - men - are threatening to kill you? I think not.

Posted without comment, just caught my eye. JTT exiles might recognise this sort of character.

Sorry to say that's very familiar, BNBN!

Thank fuck we left and came here instead.

Kucinghitam · 11/11/2025 14:46

So familiar @bignosebignose! (Feel free to pop over to the Lair as well, for general chit-chat).

Here's a More or Less podcast I heard recently about the persistently inequitable housework burden.

That certainly reminds me of a not-at-all-missed poster (or several), BNBN.

Although there's no shortage of slippery, performative, it's-so-complicated, word-salad-tossing, pseudo-intellectual, knob-polishing, self-pleasuring space-invaders on FWR.

Hey ho.

What is the Lair?

FlowerUser · 11/11/2025 16:44

What is the Lair?

A wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Well that and a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours.

Yeah nah jokes, just a bunch of folk who know each other from a different forum chatting nonsense

What is the Lair?

It's a long story, but several years ago, several of us got effectively kicked out from another forum for not believing that men can become women. So when we first moved over to MN, feeling somewhat lost and bewildered, we started a lifeboat thread to get our bearings.

We've mostly been absorbed into wider MN (and have mostly namechanged out of all recognition), but the thread lives on as the Lair - as Bez says, it's just random chitchat usually kept fairly light and apolitical but not always, we've had some very sad and heavy times. Everyone welcome who just wants to shoot the breeze about anything, feel free to pop in!
