Welcome all to the Bluestocking Pub, a haven safe from harsh reality [mostly] full of good company, and excellent food and drink served by the most efficient team of gerbils in the hospitality industry.

At barbecues in the summer after the horse's disappearance you would inevitably be asked whether you wanted a Shergar-burger.

Marie, also English, also recall Shergar.

I seem to recall that he made a reappearance in the public consciousness ten-ish years ago when horsemeat was found in various ready meals. There were sundry callous jokes about him, along with people messing around with packaging to give us all 'Filly-con-Carne' and 'Spaghetti Bologneighs'.

😄yes I remember the era of the horsemeat jokes, my fave was
Man walks into burger bar
'I'd like a burger please'
'They're off!'

Glad you remember Shergar.. but do you remember Arkle? Retired in 1966, died in 1970, and still fondly remembered in Ireland as a 'character' as well as the greatest racehorse of his timeSmile

I remember Arkle. But then, I was going through my horsey phase when he was in his pomp.

EdithStourton · 18/04/2025 21:10

I remember hearing about Arkle, and see his picture in horsey books.

But I was a bit too young to remember him as such.

I spent my teens glued to e.g. Horse of the Year Show.

FuzzyPuffling · 18/04/2025 21:21

I remember Arkle.
I was a pony mad child though, and spent every Saturday for many years mucking out, cleaning tack, hacking over the local slag heaps and dreaming...

MarchWindsAnd · 18/04/2025 21:36

I remember Shergar, and Arkle, although not much more than that they were horses.

The jokes involving hay are my favourites of those listed, I think.,

ifIwerenotanandroid · 18/04/2025 21:53

This, apparently, is Arkle. Seems a bit unnecessary.

They liked being remembered and thought they’d join us for one 😊.

I looked up Arkle, I recognised the name but couldn’t remember when - thought it was a bit off wiki had that photo but none of him live.

JanesLittleGirl · 18/04/2025 22:57

A man walks into a bar.....
Ouch!

I only knew him by name and fame until I saw a docu on the TV about him a couple of years ago - what an extraordinary animal! He seemed to be part human - he loved human company, always seemed to know what was going on, played up to the camera, didn't mind giving rides to children, so not at all your typical highly-strung racehorse.

There was an incredible piece of footage where he was walking around the parade ring before a race, making eye contact with the punters as he went around; then he picked one out, reached over and delicately plucked the card out of his hand - just for fun, it seemedSmile

I’ve already taken Colin over there.
I think giant wombat is organising the gerbils and capybaras, she’s very capable.

I hope the horses are being directed to the stables. Lovely as they are.

lcakethereforeIam · 19/04/2025 08:58

Swashbuckled · 19/04/2025 09:01

Looks a bit rough 🤢 I'll be fine.

Magpiecomplex · 19/04/2025 09:08

I'll start on the breadcrumb trail for @Bannedontherun and @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius

FuzzyPuffling · 19/04/2025 09:35

Got Rosy, got Spartacus, being followed by pigs and goats....

lcakethereforeIam · 19/04/2025 09:42

Someone remember to wake the flying squirrels. The lazy sods are still napping in the library. It's April ffs!

DeanElderberry · 19/04/2025 09:42

The advance crowd are already there, basking in front of the fire.

MyrtleLion · 19/04/2025 10:06

Locking up. I've left a map on the door for the rest to follow.
