Welcome all to the Bluestocking Pub, a haven safe from harsh reality [mostly] full of good company, and excellent food and drink served by the most efficient team of gerbils in the hospitality industry.

Who was in charge of the cheerbils? Just wanted to let you know that I've submitted my job application. Rather than getting the poor things horribly confused about what follows the "M" (and we all know spelling isn't their strong point), can I suggest setting up a second team to start learning how to spell Magpie now?

On it...

!!

I've sent them a note to inform them it was spelt wrong. They've now corrected it!

Third time's a charm.

Although they wouldn't actually let me see the whole board!

Huh! Turns out we didn't need the extra class. I've just visited the other lot of cheerbils and they are on it! They are just discussing their routine.

Edited

I'm sure it's perfect! Although some of them seem to have slightly misplaced their eyeballs. They have plenty of time to prepare, the application deadline isn't for a few days yet, and knowing HR they may take a while to shortlist.

Love it! Some serious attitude there!

Sigh!

The cheek of her! I lend her the boat for a week and suddenly she's pretending it's her own!

@inkymoose
The near-miss assault when I went for a job as a stable hand for a well-known prolific and wealthy author
If it is any comfort (and it probably isn't, because it's not directly relevant), a bloke I know did some highly-skilled but nonetheless artisanal/manual work for a well-known, prolific, wealthy and soi-disant Leftie author.

He discovered upon arrival at the massive authorial pile that he was expected, as a mere tradesman, to take his grotty little manual-labouring self and his tacky little tradesman's van round to the back of Leftie-Author Towers, and not sully the lovely gravel drive, nor the well-kept front entrance. He was 😮

He did eventually meet Famous Author and said he was horrible. I can't remember if the actual phrase used was 'condescending prat' but iirrc it was along those lines.

Congratulations, and what a relief it must be.

Time to do just what you want for a while.

Magpiecomplex · 17/04/2025 17:49

@EdithStourton a friend tells a similar story about a famous gardening personality... Every effort made to avoid the possibility of her offending his gaze. I can confirm he is also a bit of a prat.

FuzzyPuffling · 17/04/2025 18:00

Cripes...my dad was a prolific, prize winning author and scarcely made enough for a new pair of boots, never mind a stately pile with drive!
Mind you, he was an ardent socialist and supporter of women's rights and the rights of any underdog.

MarieDeGournay · 17/04/2025 18:02

Well done on finishing the marking, Magpie, I remember that feeling - enjoy!
The Cheerbils have got the spelling right eventually, but I rather liked 'Magipie'.

‘Magi pie’ sounds like some sort of fancy Xmas dish. Shepherds’ pie for everyday fare, Magi Pie for special occasions.

Magpiecomplex · 17/04/2025 19:13

Magi Pie sounds like it should be the same thing as Galette des Rois!

I use maggi in my cooking. I wonder if magi is a cheap knock off?

That needs a disclaimer

No gerbils were hurt in the making of this pie!

Unless you added the gerbil before baking then the disclaimer is not needed.

Swashbuckled · 17/04/2025 20:53

Sorry @Magpiecomplex I missed your request.

Luckily they had made a spare…
