The Bluestocking - where women are women, and small furry animals are gerbils, quokkas, capybaras, or a red panda called Rosy

Welcome all to the Bluestocking Pub, a haven safe from harsh reality [mostly] full of good company, and excellent food and drink served by the most efficient team of gerbils in the hospitality industry.

Another pub thread has just come up on my "active" list.
Another pub????

I think gerbils wanting to train as masseuses should adapt Japanese foot massage techniques and walk , or possibly jump, on their clients. They might not be heavy enough to deal with knotty muscles though.

@MarieDeGournay Banjaxed is in my DNA 🙂.

The gerbils have risen to the occasion; thanks for prompting them.

I’m aware of two other pubs @FuzzyPuffling. Did you have a peep inside?

ErrolTheDragon · 05/04/2025 20:33

We’re on a weekend jaunt; birds today included tree sparrows - it’s been a while since we’ve seen any of those - and (big giveaway as to our whereabouts) flocks of barnacle geese.

No, I'm too shy!
I'd never come in here except I was here from the beginning! 😀

Chinese takeaway for supper tonight - woo hoo!

Sounds great. Here it's the best Chicken Kyiv Waitys has to offer (100% better than the others), beer battered chips, mixed salad, garlic mayo & a rather nice cider. Something of a pub meal, really, so I'll pretend I'm in the Bluey.

What are you having, @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius ? I mean for the Chinese. I'm not actually standing at the bar.😂

Jeans..( Sorry if I sound like S&B) have you tried Lands End? Leg length up to 34" and proportional rise. Excellent quality and if you can get them in the sale, brilliant value.

34" you say?
<googles madly>

Fuzzy, I love you.

Valentines Day Love GIF

Today I have mostly been seeing magpies in my garden.

I was looking for a gif of that Fast Show character. Now MN won't let me NOT have a gif, so I've gone with this one. I haven't even had any cider yet. This is me about 10 minutes in, then I get a bit cross & shouty.😂

That's a very 'come hither' look, Swashy. Watch yourself if Marie's about the place!

EdithStourton · 05/04/2025 20:49

It's been a very busy day at Stourton Hall. DH mowed the lawn which took him hours (he has no problem finding jeans that are long enough 😡) and I sorted bookcases and cupboards. We have chucked out loads of stuff so far this year and more needs to go. I can't believe how much crap we have accrued over the years.

The problem is that some if it is nice crap (pretty pictures etc), interesting crap (e.g. books I'd rather not part with) or useful crap (tents of different sizes to accommodate varying sizes of camping party, for example). Also, I appear to have 100s upon 100s of photos of the DC aged 0-teens. WTF do I with them?

Gave up and took the dogs for a long walk. Vv dry here, but lots of peacock butterflies about.

Aw @FuzzyPuffling . ❤️

Inspired by your post, I’ve just been searching for the first ever Blue Stocking thread. The oldest I could find was in October 2013, but I think there was one before that as one poster mentions “the old thread”. It was called The Feminist Pub. Thought it would be fun to see how feminist pub conversations may or may not have changed. From an initial glance, no AI and more pints of bitter… ☺️

Swashbuckled · 05/04/2025 21:05

@EdithStourton

With the photos, you could take photos of them with your phone and upload them to virtual albums.

But, if it’s hard to throw the originals away, that won’t solve your space problem… 🤔.

FuzzyPuffling · 05/04/2025 21:16

I have found a thread called " The Bluestocking is reopening" started by our Errol back last July.
I think that might be the first of this line?

Swashbuckled · 05/04/2025 21:19

From feminist pub chat in 2013, setting the scene. Felt rather sad reading this; how everything has changed…

FuzzyPuffling · 05/04/2025 21:20

Are we cliquey? I do hope not.
I notice sometimes that people pop in but don't stay, which is a shame if it's what they need. I'm very glad of the Bluestocking, despite not doing AI.

Swashbuckled · 05/04/2025 21:20

Ah, okay. Thanks @FuzzyPuffling 😊

Swashbuckled · 05/04/2025 21:22

I haven’t found it at all cliquey. I felt very welcomed and included. ❤️

I am of a vintage to remember 1988 and 900th anniversary of the Domesday Book. A whole lot of data was gathered together and stuck on laser discs. Trying to keep it readable seems to have been an ongoing hassle from about 15 years after it was done, as the systems that could read the discs became obsolete and were chucked out.

Yer akshul Domesday, OTOH, is still fine and dandy so long as you can decipher the script, and plenty of facsimiles exist if you want to pull one off the shelf and have a go.

Probably I just need to take the photos out of the big bulky albums, weed them ruthlessly, and clearly label the backs of all the survivors and shove them into boxes in date order.

Does anyone know of an archive assistant gerbil who wants a summer job...? All the sand and parsley a gerbil could ever want, and a nice warm spot for sunbathing.

lcakethereforeIam · 05/04/2025 21:54

I'm away this week too. No barnacle geese (Scotland?) but have high hopes for Brent and, today, saw a Stone Curlew and some Swallows. Place where we're staying has WiFi but it's a bit dodgy, keep losing the connection.

I went to that London not long after the laser disc Domesday was compiled. I had a bit of a go of it in one of the museums. It is a bugger when the platforms become obsolete and the folks that know how to fix/operate them retire. There's probably loads of stuff that are hanging on because of enthusiastic and increasingly elderly volunteers. It's not just languages we lose when the last of the people speaking them are gone.

Magpiecomplex · 05/04/2025 22:10

Gosh yes. Those were the days, eh?
It does seem odd looking back that things were so erm ... apparently normal. Still, I suppose we can be comforted by the fact that that is never true, is it. Things are never normal. There is always an undercurrent or a discontent or a rebellion or a suppression or an oppression. There is always some expletive deleted trying to make money out of people who are easy to exploit.
Thank goodness for today's Bluestocking Arms women-only pub!
