Yes. Unless you have seen and heard with your own eyes and ears a witness giving evidence it is impossible to judge that evidence. That's why such importance is placed on it in our legal system. In criminal cases witnesses who are screened from the defendant are still visible to the judge, the jury and counsel.

It astonishes me how readily people who have not been in court hold forth and criticise the outcome of a trial. Unless you heard and saw all the evidence from each and every witness you are not in a position to judge.

What an odd line of questioning - every film maker takes a decision about what to call their film. I mean 'Jaws' could have been called 'Random attacks by a big bitey thing, but don't worry the sea is still safe'

I agree he is @Mmmnotsure but his questioning is very odd - asking her to confirm a trade union has freedom, and now wittering on about the title

Trying to imagine Alfred Hitchcock being questioned in court about his film making choices 😩

I think he trying to make the case that the film is a deliberate bigotted attack on trans people and that academic freedom of speech doesn't apply to non academics.

This line of questioning, suggesting that the film is full of people who shouldn't be listened to, puts me in mind of "Is it a book that you would even wish your wife or your servants to read?"

Does anyone know, has the judge actually watched the film?

It's unclear, based on something the judge said, and it is probably also not wise for us to talk about it live here, until we get clarification. I'm taking notes offline, and I would suggest others do the same.

Right. Why do we need an abundance of caution do you think? Could us discussing it affect proceedings?

I find this disturbing. If the members of UCU don't have the opportunity to hear what they say (not some journalist's spin on it) that doesn't seem very transparent. They clearly have had a lot of interest. Some people will not be able to join live, and I do think something like TT is in the public interest.
