Newly renovated, beautifully appointed. Food and Beverages, excellent (if sometimes unexpected service), delightful clientele, special accommodation for invalids, pedants, readers and normal people.

Aw. Don't eat it, though.

There was two jars up until a couple of years ago. I opened the other one and it was if she'd made it the week before. It tasted amazing!

My mum pickled some onions once in nescafe jars. She tucked them around the house to do their thing. Then promptly forgot about them. For years we'd come across one every now and again. I wouldn't be surprised if whoever is living there now still turns one up every now and again.

My weakness is keeping the pots that posh desserts can be sold in. The brand Pots & Co., were in pretty pastel coloured ramekins. I had loads of those. They, annoyingly, didn't stack. I decided to use six of them to make chocolate crème brulée. I must have overfilled the water bath. When I took it out of the oven, instead of six individual chocolate custards I had one giant (and rather watery) custard with six holes in it. Which wound up in the bin.

If there was an upside, the pots, despite being washed and dried, grew mould on the unglazed bases, so I had to throw them out. At least i got rid of some clutter! I've still got a couple but I daren't buy them anymore, otherwise I'll just start accumulating them again.

Allergies can go as well as come with age - DH suffered badly from hay fever but it's gone in the last few years which is fortunate as we've some gorgeous meadows in the area that he used to have to avoid when the grasses were flowering but can now enjoy.

Otoh I never had any allergies till the last couple of years - probably dust mitesHmm.

At this point I'm saving it for the zombie apocalypse. When all the rest of the food has long ago been eaten, or gone off, that jar of jam will be my final meal!!

Or if you discover then it's no longer edible, it'll probably make a good anti-zombie weapon.

I think I have broken a toe in my back paw. I am prone to toe fractures, having had 5 or 6 since 2018.
It's badly bruised and I think I dropped something on it, but can't remember what. I have a really high pain threshold, so I remember it stung a bit at the time but thought I'd be fine. Now I can't move the joint and it's a bit hurty if I put weight on it.

It will be annoying if it's broken because I am off to that London tomorrow for a talk and networking thing which I'll have to miss.

I'll go to the minor injuries unit in the morning.

In the meantime, I'd like the gerbils to bring me a cushion for my hurty paw, and lashings of hot chocolate.

I did have my hair done though and that was lovely. I get to read all about the royal family in Hello magazine without being judged.

That sounds painful, Myrtle, poor you!
Where is Androcles when you need him?🙄
Hope it's not broken and you manage to do that London thing - presuming that you really want to go, and wouldn't prefer to spend the day with your hurty paw on a cushion, knocking back the hot chocolates..

Oh no! The gerbils have sprung into action! (And how the hell do I get it to depict you maneless???? I'm running out of word options/ideas)

Maybe ask for a female mountain lion?
(of course the gerbils weren't supposed to be wearing bandages!)

I'm not sure about that AI lately. There's always something decidedly weird in every image ...

If you describe Her Magnificent Majesty Myrtle as a lioness does it still try to give her a mane?

Woohoo (I'd missed the 'mountain ' part from my description) success.

Thank you!

Lioness does indeed produce images with manes!

Are some of the gerbils mutating into chipmunks? I suppose the latter would be more likely to live in the same regions as mountain lions, although probably not as relaxed in their vicinity.

FuzzyPuffling · 16/01/2025 09:16

Oh Myrtle, poor you. Sending anti-hurty-paw vibes.

Re allergies, DH has hay-fever. He really hoped that after his stem cell transplant they might go. Nope. So don't try that at home, people.

MarieDeGournay · 16/01/2025 09:42

If AI is increasingly unsure of what a gerbil looks like, so am I, so I googled a picture of one. The accompanying text included

  • The largest one is the great gerbil, which can grow to 16 inches in length. It’s found in central Asia. It’s also a reservoir species for the plague.
Soon to be a major motion picture: RESERVOIR GERBILS

with
Mr Honey

Mr Honey Dark-eyed

Mr Sapphire

Mr White Ruby-eyed

Mr Pearl
[gosh they sound terrifying..not]

Although a 16 inch gerbil would be useful around the place - they could carry bigger trays with more hot chocolates - the plague business is a bit of a worry so let's stick to the little gerbils and the bigger quokkas and capybaras can do the heavy lifting.

Here's a reminder of what a gerbil actually looks like, AI please take note!

It's not broken, just badly bruised which will be hurty for two to three weeks. I am using my stick, which I got when broke my ankle in 2019, which helps.

I do think I wanted to have an excuse not to go to that London, but its a really good talk with a famous author and then networking, which will help with work. I can go and I will go, and I know it will be fun. It's the thought that is dreadful. As I may have mentioned I am mildly agoraphobic unless I have an event.

Thank you all for the lovely pictures. I feel very cherished with all the hot chocolate and attentive gerbils. They like the job so much they have bandaged me all the way to the hip, when it's just my big toe!

What is the difference between gerbils and hamsters? We had hamsters when I was little. I remember one died after two and a half years so we got another and he died after six weeks. We don't know why and we never had any more.

MyrtleLion · 16/01/2025 10:02

The inherent bias of AI is to produce male animals, as moose well knows. Asking for a mountain lion removes the mane, but I'm not sure if it's depicting a male or female mountain lion.

MarieDeGournay · 16/01/2025 10:05

Glad the hurty paw isn't too bad and it won't stop you from Boldly GoingSmile

Boiledbeetle · 16/01/2025 10:54

My washing machine just broke! As in half an hour ago! Booo!

The engineer will arrive between 12 and 3 pm TODAY to fix it.

<Faints!>

Boiledbeetle · 16/01/2025 11:22

Meanwhile somewhere near London...

Nice hat Myrtle!
