On the subject of Joni M, here's one for Pedantry Corner: did she write the longest sentence in popular music?
The last time I saw Richard was Detroit in '68
and he told me, "All romantics meet the same fate someday
cynical and drunk and boring someone in some dark café."
The only competition I can think of is the Doobie Brothers:
What a fool believes he sees
no wise man has the power to reason away.
I love River too, lcakethereforeIam. Also on Blue - every track is wonderful.
But it's hard to beat the lyrics of Chelsea Morning, which is on Clouds from 1969 (she's been so creative for so long!) - they make me smile every time, such brightness and joy and uncomplicated happiness:
Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning
And the first thing that I knew
There was milk and toast and honey
And a bowl of oranges, too
And the sun poured in like butterscotch
And stuck to all my senses
Oh, won't you stay? We'll put on the day
And we'll talk in present tenses
