En franglais, in English .... open to all women for company, fun and fabulous artworks. Leave unwanted reality in the porch and come along in.

Gerbelle, nn Belle.
Bleue.
Chocktaille nn Chocky.

C'est tout.

Chocky for short. I'd keep the reality of where the name came from secret and just let the kid think it was somehow connected to the John Wyndham book!

It might be useful to point out to newcomers to the Stockin' that, as far as I know, the phrase 'Foucault Addled Grievance Gerbils' was the origin of all the cute little furry creatures appearing around these parts.

I don't know who said it first, but somebody on here knows everything, so I'll soon find out.Smile

And I believe that there should be a hyphen between 'Foucault' and 'Addled' otherwise it means that Foucault confused some rodent malcontents. I'm sure he did, I wouldn't put anything past him, but the hyphen makes it mean something else. That's why we have hyphens. Duh.

You'll find me in Pedantry Corner, loudly complaining that proper punctuation is just proper punctuation, not pedantry.

And then I'll leaving in a huff when somebody says, 'Well if it's not pedantry, why are you making a fuss about it in Pedantry Corner?'
And then I'll say 'Yeah? Want to make something of it?'
And then somebody will say 'Want to step outside and say that to my face?'
And then somebody else will sit down at the old Joanna and strike up the first notes of
Bluestocking nights, where the women are free,
Raising our voices in harmony.
and we'll hug each other instead.

Crikey it's only 9am and I've been through all that already😧

I think i know who it was but I'd have to go check, but I'm not awake enough yet. It does come from Barry's 'Gender Addled Grievance Gerbils' (and he has heard both versions of the song! Poor sod got sent them on his birthday!)

And for once an actual photo not an AI one!

I must be related to quokkas as I haven't really left that thread (only a 170 more posts to go) but placemarking so you little buggers don't hide from me.

Photo taken recently - it's definitely you, Pixie. What a woman!

Consider it done...with a Tunnock's selection.

Can't fault the gerbils! The Gerbil Eats delivery has been received and our missing poster is currently enjoying breakfast! 😁

In one of Terry Pratchett's books, the magic has gone awry, which means that mentioning any fictional magical being, brings them into existence - including the Eater of Socks - maybe that's how we got Foucault-Addled Gerbils?

I admire your scholarliness and productivity this early on a Monday morning, @MarieDeGournay - and I forgot to say earlier, but you are more than welcome to call me Woley - it feels very friendly and I love it.

<waves> 👋 👋

Boiledbeetle · 23/09/2024 11:53

I can now confirm the Focault-addled Grievance Gerbils was coined by Alison Donut and is a play on Barry's (the EDI jester) original Gender-addled Grievance Gerbil.

Well, this should be a red rag to a bull for all Francophile & Franglais-fluent members of La Bluestocking.

I'll start. Quokkette?

www.mumsnet.com/talk/baby_names/5171475-help-punchy-unusual-french-girl-names

Can someone explain to me how a name can have energy and strength?

Anyway, the Latin name for the quokka is Setonix brachyurus, so I'm off over to that thread to suggest Sétonie or Sétonice (pronounced Say-ton-ee and Say-ton-ees).

Chersfrozenface · 23/09/2024 12:32

The Latin name for the cocoa tree is Theobroma cacao, so another suggestion is Théobrome (pronounced tay-o-brome).

The rose chafer, a very lovely beetle and the best-known of the Cetonia genus, is Cetonia aurata, so we could have Cétonie. Or should we want a first and a middle name, Cétonie Dorée.

Marvellous erudition and wit @Chersfrozenface

I tried to create an AI image of Cetonia aurata drinking tea in the Bluestocking pub, but it had trouble. Finding the right words in the case of AI is very difficult. Sometimes you have to leave out the right words and hope for the best.

Can I order a full breakfast, extra black pudding, and a hot chocolate via gerbil eats? one of our number is currently sat on a naughty step somewhere and isn't allowed out to play. A little delivery may cheer her up!

Oh no how crap happened to someone i know😁

Cetonie Doree is lovely (no idea how to do accents). I once 'borrowed' a couple of rose chafers from a relative's garden to see if they'd be happy in mine - but I never saw them again. We do, however, have loads of cockchafers every May, bashing into the windows at night & boucing off to lie upside down until rescued or eaten by a cat (only once & she regretted it immediately). So may I suggest Melolontha as a name? Mel or Melly for short. Middle name Melolontha, of course.😁

Also, I've been outside, I think my disguise is not waterproof! I bought the waterproof magnificent beetle disguise. I am most unimpressed

Can I get a fresh pot if anyone sees a gerbil?

It always reminds me of going to restaurants in the 70s when Orange juice served in tiny glasses was a starter and Black forest gateau was always on the dessert menu.

I've not had it in years!

I made one & while delicious, it was such a faff that I started buying the frozen ones from Tesco!

My mum made beautiful Black Forest gateaux. She made one once for my sister's birthday and, while it was in the kitchen awaiting its moment, the cat licked all the cream off the top. She cut off the sponge that the cat dribble had soaked, re-iced it and the, now slightly wonky, cake was a great success.

FuzzyPuffling · 23/09/2024 15:57

I make a chocolate all-in-one sponge and layer it with whipped cream and a tin of black cherry filling.
Looks inelegant but dead easy and bloody lovely.
I hate diets.

Many, many years ago I had a summer job in the poshest hotel in our small town, which really isn't saying a lot.

The most popular starter was prawn cocktail with Marie Rose sauce (equal parts tomato ketchup and salad cream) and the most popular dessert was Black Forest gateau.

The stories I could tell you about that place, you honestly wouldn't believe them.
