I hope all the women are okay.

Astonishingly the reporting so far seems quite neutral and even handed.

Trans chaos hits ‘women will speak’ rally

A women’s rights gathering collapsed into chaos on Saturday afternoon after some counter Transgender Liberation protesters swarmed the rally and threw eggs and water balloons at speakers.

'“Victoria Police is disappointed with the actions of the group and while it supports peaceful protests it has a zero-tolerance policy for violence or disruptive acts which impact the broader community,” police said.
A live stream of the rally posted on YouTube by Women’s Action Group showed a barricade of police officers in yellow vests separating the #WomenWILLSpeak event from a large crowd gathered with signs.
In the same live stream, some of the protesters in the Women Action’s Group camp can be seen holding signs reading “trans women are men”, “inquiry into gender medicine now” and “no male cheats in women’s sports”.
On Wednesday, a Facebook page titled Trans Queer Solidarity posted about the rally, saying: “We need to out-number them and limit their recruitment like we have before.”'

Eggs and water balloons thrown as protesters face off at Women Will Speak rally in Melbourne

Victoria police said 20 protesters were outnumbered by 150 from another group, which hurled ‘water balloons at the speakers’

“Victoria Police is disappointed with the actions of the group and while it supports peaceful protests it has a zero-tolerance policy for violence or disruptive acts which impact the broader community.”

''The Trans Queer Solidarity group posted a notice to the website of the Green Left advocating for a counter protest to the rally.
“Help our community drown out the hateful and regressive rhetoric.
“Fascists off our streets! Destroy carceral feminism! Trans liberation now!”

So ''carceral feminists'' are the real fascists now?

Such a small number of brave women, and such hatred and violence against them! I hope they are all OK, it must have been terrifying.

The report was fairly neutral, which is a hopeful sign that a bit of balance is coming into reporting.

I was surprised to read that Moira Deeming MP 'was defenestrated from the Liberal Party room after attending a rally critical of transgender beliefs'.
Defenestrated??

Fariha31 · 17/08/2024 10:54

Ahhh, nothing says progressive like beating and silencing women.

InvisibleBuffy · 17/08/2024 10:54

The banners on each side were interesting. On the women's side it was calling for an inquiry into gender medicine and saying no cheats in women's sports, and according to this image, the trans side was putting up banners saying they 'bash back' and making 'fascists' afraid.
And of course, only one side was throwing projectiles.
But of course, I'm sure someone will come along to say both sides.
The reporting does seem to be shifting more to reality. I think the broader media, even on the left, is starting to realise there's a problem here.

Relieved to see an Australian media outlet using the term "women's rights" rather than "anti trans". Seems like there may finally be some progress.

Yes. Best part of the report.

I see they're out there gunning for the 'facists' again.

What does Steve Marriott have to do with anything?

More footage. Those women were very brave. I can't find anything to say they are all okay, thinking of them. Thank god the police had a robust presence.

Without mentioning specific threads, or the obsession of specific posters or feminists, or a particular political party, if you keep saying that women's rights campaigners or safeguarding champions are fascists (or fascist adjacent), you will give out the strong impression to the curious, concerned but as yet uninformed public, that a) those actually are fascist positions and b) that you are opposed to women's rights and child safeguarding.

They should ask themselves if that is what they want.

NitroNine · 17/08/2024 11:54

The organiser of the women’s protest is Māori. Not a group popular with fascists.

She’s an academic, & author of - amongst other things - Pre-Colonial Māori Culture Had No Diverse Gender Identities.

Really hope all the women involved are ok - & am guessing the woman nicked was not the old-fashioned variety, but the police of course give the gender ID not the sex & thus that’s reported 🙄

Who was that interesting Māori woman who encountered all sorts of difficulties and a mass of ostracism | resistance around the time of Laurel Hubbard? Anyone recall?

DeanElderberry · 17/08/2024 12:25

'Carceral' was quite the buzz word back when all the anti-policing protests were happening in the USA - how many years back? The issues around the prison system and race in America are worth analysing and criticising, but not caused by feminists, and of limited relevance in Europe or, I suspect, Oceania, and using them to argue for no enforcement of the rule of law in any circumstances was always bonkers.

A 36-year-old Brunswick woman was arrested at the scene for allegedly assaulting police.

A woman? I wonder if that is true?

Igmum · 17/08/2024 12:27

@MarieDeGournay defenestrated? Now there's a headline from 1848...

DeanElderberry · 17/08/2024 12:41

Or modern Putin-land.

The footage on the news showed young men all in black, wearing masks - although one was wearing a pair of carpentry goggles instead - going absolutely ape shit. It was appalling. The segment reported that the disruptors were blasting music and playing instruments to drown the speakers out. There were young children there - looking very unhappy- wearing face paint and playing drums. Who on earth would bring children to a protest like that?
The organising women got short sound bites and were calm, collected and pointed: an amazing contrast with the flailing, screaming protestors on the other side.
After the shit show that was the reporting on KJK’s rally, Monica Deeming and the other women got to work on the media; and after a few legal threats for defamation and a bit of networking, we now have reporting that accurately describes what happened. Except for describing the person arrested as a woman: it took six coppers to subdue that person.

NitroNine · 17/08/2024 14:27

It’s quite remarkable that “you want rapists & murderers imprisoned” is now a justification for attacking women & calling them fascists.

Yet again, if you’re trying to push back against the spectre of your movement containing a disproportionate amount of sex offenders - according to prison stats from around the globe where they’ve not been deliberately obfuscated - & the narrative that you’re trying to erode children’s boundaries via eg fetish wear at Pride; drag shows aimed at children but not suitable for them^ (Rainbow Dildo Butt Monkey springs immediately to mind); & PSHE courses that teach about sex acts in great detail… arguing against the incarceration of sex offenders is not a good look.

Doubtless for the vast majority it is just another mindless application of “Right Side Of History” - but for some people it will absolutely suit them down to the ground to argue that rapists shouldn’t be imprisoned. That committing CSA shouldn’t see you banged up. That it is positively fascist to suggest otherwise.

In Australia there’s a valid discussion to be had about the over-representation of Māori people & Torres Strait Islanders in the prison population. It’s a huge issue, with some parallels to the vast levels of over-incarceration of black people in the US. But in neither place have women built nor shaped the systems involved, nor do they now, to any significant degree, control them.

^arguably drag is inherently unsuitable for children, yes, but certainly one could create a show & indeed persona that was more suitable for minors

Thanks and good to know that some of the media at least have responded positively to representations.

And the "woman" has turned out to be a man, have they? Quelle surprise!

ahjeez · 17/08/2024 15:23

I feel that some groups, notably trans activists, seem to solely speak in slogans. Can't help but imagine that's how they speak in every day life.

Ordering a coffee? "Skinny decaf latte now!"
Buying groceries? "Sourdrough bread is bread!"
