If this thread gets deleted I'll haunt you all on every thread with images like the one below.

can you guess what I'm doing this afternoon? (The AI is being seriously creepy today)

😳😱make it go away pleeeease! That's terrifying on so many levels, as if dentistry wasn't scary enough..

As usual I can't resist a linguistic derail- seeing the word 'guttie' for gym shoes was a real blast from the past, as my gran used to totally mystify us by calling them that. From gutta-percha, which was used originally for the soles, I later learnt.

Sorry for the image! 💜

As for plimsolls We called them pumps growing up.

Boiledbeetle · 28/05/2024 12:24

What is going on!!! I apologised for the image to Marie and stated what I called that particular type of shoe that is being discussed

This is highly bizarre!

Going to take us back on track and announce my package is now on the European mainland.

I was gardening in my Gerbil t-shirt yesterday when my neighbour popped round with bags of lawn mowings for me, and she asked me what the [Fork] the t-shirt was about so I told her it was a long story and I'll take her for a coffee one day and explain. I would have explained it but I was just about to serve up a curry.

RumNotRun · 28/05/2024 13:51

It is going to be a strange story to explain to someone who doesn't understand the wonder of the MN segues.

If anyone interested in linguistics is reading, THAT would make an interesting study, with permission obtained first of course.

NitroNine · 28/05/2024 21:07

seriously how is my link still hidden?! What do MNHQ have against Victorian MPs who were big on boat safety?!

Ugh! That's what I call them now. I grew up calling them pumps, then that became a synonym for farts and I still can't bring myself to go back to using it.

I know. It might have to be coffee and cake and then another coffee.

lcakethereforeIam · 28/05/2024 22:31

I'm genuinely baffled. What do MN have against a safety feature on ships? Does anyone know?

Who knows there's been some very odd deletions over the last few days!

I wore my Foucault-addled grievance gerbils t shirt to the dentist. If there were any mumsnetters there they were too polite to mention it.

I'm not taking any chances of being deleted via my words if its automated

He was pretty cool for a C19 MP. Not up there with my faves (JS Mill ftw!) but always nice to see an MP concerned with people not dying unnecessarily.

Perhaps that's it. Although, there's a book I've been meaning to read called Ella Minnow Pea. If words get banned because someone is misusing them (how...? No, I don't want to know), then that's a situation I can envision on MN.

Hope it all went well at the dentist @Boiledbeetle , my gerbil merch should be arriving soon, possibly tomorrow <excited!>

There is some kind of pervert with a very specific thing about that word and so there is an auto-deletion on it. I know this because I was on a whole thread about what they are called - I am in the SW, where they are daps - and it got zapped.

It's to do with a pervy troll.

Best stick to your dialect term of choice.

The footwear in question were always pumps where I come from, and I've never heard pumps for farts, so not a problem. Where I live now, they're daps.

GrimbutGerbil · 29/05/2024 08:55

Also, we have raised £44 for Sex Matters so far, which is pretty good considering I've got everything set to earn the minimum profit.

I was wondering, so I googled it:
Nearly all adult beetles, and many beetle larvae, have mandibles. In general form they are similar to those of grasshoppers: hardened and tooth-like. Beetle mandibles show a remarkable amount of variability between species, and some are very highly adapted to the food sources or other uses that the species has … See more [no thanks, that'll do nicely]
Am I right to assume, BoiledBeetle, that your mandibles are very highly adapted to Tunnocks?
Hope you managed to transcend dental medication OK😃

@MarieDeGournay I resemble that remark!

Dentist appt was OK. I'm not looking forward to the next one mind where they'll be doing dental work that involves needles and drills and possibly pliers!

Boiledbeetle · 29/05/2024 10:13

So... The back to school threads discussing school uniforms must be fun! They must turn into a hellscape of deletions once they start discussing PE kit for their darling little 5 year olds!!

lcakethereforeIam · 29/05/2024 13:34

All the swearing MN let us get away with but pIimsoIIs are where they draw the line!?

lcakethereforeIam · 29/05/2024 13:35

Some sneaky capital i's 😃
