Ah damn.

ditalini · 23/04/2024 10:01

Oh dear. The seminar has been cancelled due to illness.

Genuinely, I hope everyone's ok and this is just a cover excuse.

borntobequiet · 23/04/2024 10:01

Gutted. I’ve just received an email saying it’s cancelled “due to illness”.

@Dumbledoreslemonsherbets, in the interests of transparency, accountability and otherwise jolly good practice, I think you need to confirm that you, @AlisonDonut and @Boiledbeetle are not all the same person if they are to be your supervisors.

And @AlisonDonut and @Boiledbeetle, you should probably testify to the fact that you are:
a) different women,
b) not being bribed financially by anyone, and
c) have no commercial interests in @Dumbledoreslemonsherbets'project.

I'll need to consult my solicitor first.

Don't call me, I'll call you!

(Continues to dream of the extra business Dumbles ground-breaking paper will generate for my Tunnocks, cake, cheese and weetabix poetry writing retreat whilst I share out the bribe money from Dumble between me myself and I. Erm... I mean me and Alison! )

The complexity of random language and in jokes on FWR, hot housed by sea lions and monitors, could give rise to a useful unbreakable code ready for Ww3, a la Navajo.

pombears and penisbeakers gently mixing with Malaga airport, tunnocks and autocarrot.

ArabellaScott · 23/04/2024 10:02

I, too, genuinely hope that the student involved is okay.

This looks to me like someone has been badly let down by a higher education body; in fact, I'd say by the whole academic establishment.

lifeturnsonadime · 23/04/2024 10:02

Cancelled due to illness!

I think the lawyers have been on to them.

SqueakyDinosaur · 23/04/2024 10:00

Just got an email from Aston. The seminar's been cancelled "due to illness".

Yeah, just had that too.

AGlinnerOfHope · 23/04/2024 10:03

I’d be pretty green, in their situation.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 23/04/2024 10:04

Butter goes on Weetabix. Butter and Marmite go on toast NOT Weetabix! Heathens.

I would be deeply flattered to be taken for a sockpuppet of BoiledBeetle, MrsOvertonsWindow, IwanttoRetire, ClogLady and many others.

Swashbuckled · 23/04/2024 10:05

Just had an email that it has been cancelled due to illness.

Can't work out how to insert screen shot.

AprilBringsTheSweetSpringShowers · 23/04/2024 10:05

@SqueakyDinosaur I’ve got that email, too. I note that it says cancelled rather than postponed.

It's more likely the poor student is having stress related issues. I hope they're ok.

Sick at the thought of having to actually talk about the very transphobic!?! women of mumsnet whilst 90% of your audience is made up of those very women would make even those with no shame feel slightly queasy I'd imagine!

I've done a bit of googling and found a large number of academic studies founded on scraped Mumsnet data. Several of them say in their abstract this site is a rich source of data and they obtained it using scraping tools. I've also found links on sites like fiver asking for scrapers to search for various subject matters from the site.

If ever regulation were needed it's around matters such as this.

I was expecting a cancellation though not for that reason. I hope Eden (the student) is OK.

(Edited to add name)

princessleah1 · 23/04/2024 10:08

The young person must be incredibly stressed by all this. No doubt it will be blamed on bullying - Karen - Terf - monsters rather than shit show academics.

@Anothernamechangetochange Can you go onto the Corpus thread and post some examples there (and then probably report your post so that MN are aware). I think it's really important that they know about this.

Swashbuckled · 23/04/2024 10:10

I think it's likely they've given the cancellation reason as illness because it's easier all round.

Anothernamechangetochange · 23/04/2024 10:10

If they're reading this please know we aren't angry with you, if anything we are grateful to you. Without your proposal we wouldn't have been made aware of the other work going on in your department that has far wider reaching implications to free speech than your studies.

SqueakyDinosaur · 23/04/2024 10:11

I too hope that the student is ok. I also hope, if it is stress-related and/or MN-related, that both the student and supervisor might reflect a little on their language and assumptions.

I've rarely seen a lazier or more perfunctory description of a research project, nor a weaker bibliography. It's the equivalent of quoting from Up Pompeii in an academic study of 1st century Rome.

MyLadyDisdainlsYetLiving · 23/04/2024 10:11

Ah well, Eden may have to reconsider the topic of Edens PhD, but Eden and Nicci could probably work up a paper on what happens when research subjects become aware they are being studied?

Tinysoxxx · 23/04/2024 10:12

When I was helping my 2 boys, 2 girls and 1 other search for a university, I searched on here to see what other mums views were. I relayed which halls were best to go to etc.

This isn’t doing Aston’s reputation any good.

ShireWifeofNigelFarage · 23/04/2024 10:14

Boiledbeetle · 23/04/2024 09:35

Will the AI think the Farrage usernames are actually fans of his? and possibly even his wife?????

For the record I am not, and never have been, married to Nigel Farage. Nor will I marry Nigel Farage at anytime hence.

Sadface at Thursday being cancelled. Hope Eden feels better soon because we still have a LOT of questions to ask.
