@Boiledbeetle God i love him without a full stop or breath he hammers and nails the fucking issue to the floor. Who doesn’t hate a hate crime…..

Yeah, they/them is trying to coerce lesbians into accepting penis…

I wasn't expecting that. 😕

Isn't she, as far as Butler ever makes sense, expecting lesbians to get over what everyone is supposed to pander to tw for, dislike/dysphoria of male bodies?

Sorry! But worth it.

Crying.

Also can't stop laughing at the idea of reporting Police Scotland to Police Scotland.

I loved some of his older videos about Brexit and the Tories, but there are a lot of people I felt talked a lot of sense about other political issues whose brains just turn to mush when it comes to gender. I'm delighted to see Jonathan Pie isn't ignoring the gender issue and hoping it'll go away like so many other political commentators.

Age was in the quote you used in your post but sex wasn't (and we know sex isn't included in the law because erm reasons).
I would absolutely report police Scotland if the law includes age but their ability to report doesn't.

Edited

Yep, the snitch form doesn't give the option to report a hate incident linked to age....

While its great news she has shown what is not hatred, I'm just waiting for it to be framed as a one rule for the rich and famous, another for the unknown woman with everything to lose which undoubtedly will happen. Some think thats how the football act got so many spurious prosecutions.

JKR is already a step ahead. She posted on twitter:

I hope every woman in Scotland who wishes to speak up for the reality and importance of biological sex will be reassured by this announcement, and I trust that all women - irrespective of profile or financial means - will be treated equally under the law. If they go after any woman for simply calling a man a man, I'll repeat that woman's words and they can charge us both at once.

Fetlocksblowininthewind · 02/04/2024 23:54

I'm still playing catch up but just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of admiration and love for JKR!
I don't have the right words to express my gratitude for what she's done.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 02/04/2024 23:55

Has anybody else noticed that the protected characteristic of "religion or belief" in the Equality Act has been narrowed to just "religion" in this legislation?

I bet that was so that it wouldn't be a hate crime to abuse women for having gender critical views.

Yes, it's mentioned upthread as an interesting and probably intentional omission. It's feeling that, like misogyny, it's been excluded intentonally.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 03/04/2024 00:21

I’ve just been sucked into a Twitter rabbit hole. I copied and pasted JKR’s tweet and then went back and read some of her older tweets.

She is so smart and witty and incisive and I want to be her when I grow up.

<looks in the mirror and sees middle age, shrugs, and goes back to MumsNet>

Mollyollydolly · 03/04/2024 00:31

I'm still catching up been out and about all day, but just wanted to say that the thing I cannot get over with JK Rowling is how incredibly clever she is.

I'm totally convinced she sent that tweet about Willoughby to set this whole thing in motion. At the time I thought what's she talking about IW for, IW is not worthy of her time or attention and IW will love this. Just ignore the melt.

But it set this whole thing in motion .. if it was a plot to one of her books you'd think it was too far fetched in its perfection.

I'm totally in awe of her and a bit scared of her tbh, she's run rings round them all, and most of them are too daft to even realise it.

Totally awesome woman.

Yes. It's working so much in her favour, I've been wondering how much of it was planned.

Datun · 03/04/2024 00:37

And by her favour, I mean our favour 😊

Datun · 03/04/2024 00:37

She has definitely had the whole thing planned out, presumably in exactly the same way she plans her books!

She just needed someone, anyone, to be a thoroughly obnoxious oblivious to how much hate they themselves were spewing out on twitter in JKRs direction person. And if that someone was also desperate for JKRs attention and was itching to report the nasty lady for calling them hurty words all the better for the plan to work.

I'm sure she had loads to choose from, but only a few will have tweeted the right things at the right moments in time and could be guaranteed to react in a totally OTT self absorbed way.

And we all know who the lucky person was!

It was kind of inevitable it was going to be IW though as IW is very predictable in IWs behaviour patterns!

I've said it before. She is always several steps ahead.

Smart, smart lady.

My admiration for JKR has reached a new height.

What a woman.

Emotionalsupportviper · 03/04/2024 08:51

AutumnCrow · 02/04/2024 21:53

why do the newspapers keep reporting them as 'she'?

I think it's some sort of 'agreed' editorial code?

It would be nice if they at least used quotation marks. @AutumnCrow

why are not all the protected characteristics listed? It's almost like there's a hierarchy

Plus although they have missed out sex, they have added "gender identity", which is not a protected characteristic under the Equality Act. (Gender reassignment is)

RoyalCorgi · 03/04/2024 08:58

I agree that JKR had all this planned. There was a reason she ignored Willoughby for ages and then turned her attention to them. Willoughby walked straight into the trap she set.

You only have to read her books to see how complicated her mind is, and how capable she is of thinking several moves ahead - she's like a chess grandmaster.

To protect sex you have to define it.

And we know how they feel about that.

It's hardly an even match though. If you assembled the brightest and the best in the Scottish government you'd still only have the brightest and best of the Scottish government. And that and a dollar would buy you a subway ticket, as I heard one from an American friend.

Indeed!

But it will be a hate crime to remark that a man who believes he's a woman doesn't change sex.

Campervans for me, but not for thee, as the saying goes.

I hadn't noticed. Shit... that's quite sinister.
Hm, inclined to think that may be more (or at least double whammy) of making this a blasphemy law. Protecting religion rather than 'religion or belief' sounds like privileging religious people and discrimination against atheists/anyone without an actual religious affiliation.

I'd like to see a high profile non-religious person or two following JKRs example to test this.

turbonerd · 03/04/2024 09:47

The whole law is extremely sinister.
Bless Jonathan Pie too, for his excellent piece.

Why would Scotland walk right back into East-Germany anno 1970 and snuggle down there? What’s this extremely totalitarian way of thinking doing getting a law?

Oh, wait.
