'There's a question of what is a woman and what is a man. But I would say a woman is someone who is born a woman or someone who under the GRA 2004 is certified as having transitioned from a man to a woman'.
...
'I support the GRA and don't want to see it rolled back. We brought it forward for a very good reason'.

Harriet Harman, at the Fawcett Society event.

Thank you, Julia Long, for asking the question.

Who is, unfortunately an MP and influential in the Labour Party, particularly matters of legislation, being a KC.

ArabellaScott · 15/10/2023 14:23

Also Chair of the Fawcett Society and the Joint Committee on Human Rights.

Knew it.

The Labour Party's definition of a woman is 'legal woman', i.e. can be a man.

StephanieSuperpowers · 15/10/2023 14:25

I don't have a lady cert. I don't have a man cert. Do I lack a sex?

Mother of the House! There's a particular irony in that title ...

YouJustDoYou · 15/10/2023 14:29

No. As Blair White says, a trans woman is a trans woman. The distinction is vital, medically, at the very least.

LuisVitton · 15/10/2023 14:29

Stepping down at next election

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 15/10/2023 14:31

Weasel words. Colour me amazed.

And why do these heroic campaigners and SJW never seem to talk about or even mention transmen ? Is it because they are AFAB and therefore don’t matter?

If you have a passport it will say F, if you have a driving licence your sex is encoded in your driver number.

Mind you, it could be your "gender" these days, as people can get these official ID documents with opposite sex markers, even without a GRC.

To be fair, she did also add the converse. I skipped over it in ellipsis because the bit that is pertinent is the 'woman' definition' .

That would be Harriet Harman who supported the Paedophile Information Exchange I suppose. Her judgment wasn't great then either.

melmonroe · 15/10/2023 14:47

It doesn't surprise me particularly after her involvement with PIE

EasternStandard · 15/10/2023 14:49

This is Labour’s position isn’t it?

I don’t feel surprised. Maybe because Starmer tried to hide behind ‘adult female’ and I knew it was just waffle

But it’s clear it’s this

Floisme · 15/10/2023 14:53

This is why we need Labour - and I don't mean an individual MP, I mean the party manifesto - to define exactly what they mean when they say they will protect single sex spaces.

ArabellaScott · 15/10/2023 14:53

I'd forgotten about Harman and PIE.

Paedophile group letter link to Harriet Harman and Patricia Hewitt

A 1979 letter from a Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE) supporter, containing £50 for 'the defence' of three members facing prosecution, is labelled with Ms Harman's initials.

This is Labour desperately trying to claw back some of their female votes, and not appear quite so batshit as they have previously, in my opinion.

And they're still behind the curve.

They still don't understand that despite it being a piece of (highly sexist) piss to get a gender recognition certificate, people are fully aware that they're going to make it even easier!

What is the bloody, fucking point of them claiming that men can be women if they acquire a piece of paper that relies one hundred percent on sexism, and anyway, you're not allowed to see it!

The entire concept of a biological women and a legal woman who is really a man, is just as terminally stupid as claiming some women have a penis.

sunnyseed · 15/10/2023 14:59

If it weren’t for this issue and their stance on allowing green belt housing then I would be voting for them in a heartbeat.

Thingybob · 15/10/2023 14:59

She also said that she was aware that not everyone agrees with her and she supports the right of others to hold and express a different view.

That is surely a roll back of the position most Labour MPs held only a few months ago?

I imagine it's finally dawning on some of them that No Debate is soo last year.

Brokendaughter · 15/10/2023 15:07

Nope.

Anyone who thinks that a scrap of paper means anything in this context should not be allowed to make more complicated decisions than what drink they will have with a biscuit.

They shouldn't be handing out some sort of participation certificate in womanhood.
Men don't qualify & actual women don't need them.

UnalterableSpaceCadet · 15/10/2023 15:10

A certificate which if they have their way you can pretty much print off at home for a fiver?

Janie143 · 15/10/2023 15:12

A certificate which no one can see or ask about

AutumnCrow · 15/10/2023 15:13

An invisible certificate that means nothing but gains men everything they want.
