Just seen this on twitter, or "X" , and thought I'd share. I always liked Lowri Turner, even more so now.

I think Mr Menno features that clip of Kumar screeching in one of his discussion videos.

You're right. Mr Menno has a really good video where he dissects Kumar's attack on Ricky Gervais:

o

Thanks for sharing. Have recently discovered Mr Menno ❤ but hadn't seen this particular video.

Love the fact that Nish Kumar is not named in a thread title on this board (he's not that important) but the woman who handed him his backside on a plate is.

I used to like Nish (I'm a leftie) but nah - no more.

"a large number of people on what you might call the left don't think for themselves at all. They lack the curiosity or the intellectual ability to think through an argument, collect and assess the evidence, listen to both sides of the debate. They just pick a side and adopt wholesale a set of beliefs that come as a package. Currently trans rights is the most fashionable of those beliefs, so people like Kumar adopt them unthinkingly - after all, there's absolutely no cost to him in being seen to hold those views. They represent, as has been pointed out many times on here, the absolutely shining example of a luxury belief."

Well said, this was exactly what was going on with the Garden Court lot. Hence the palpable outrage when it bit them on the arse.

Tinysoxxx · 29/08/2023 19:24

so people like Kumar adopt them unthinkingly - after all, there's absolutely no cost to him in being seen to hold those views
I understand what you mean but there is a cost because he loses a lot of fans, particularly female and gay ones who have thought about this more. And a lot of credibility because he either just hasn’t thought this through to the logical conclusion or is misogynistic. It seems such a weird ‘cause’ for him to rant about and lose fans.

LondonLass91 · 29/08/2023 19:26

I watched this and thought Lowri was wonderful, so pleased she spoke up.

elgreco · 29/08/2023 19:32

Never found him funny, he's more of a polemicist than a comedian.

TheMarzipanDildo · 29/08/2023 19:59

RoyalCorgi · 29/08/2023 12:26

Plus, he really hates Ricky Gervais, doesn't he. That does not sound like professional rivalry. Nor does it sound like the normal TRA ally objections.

A lot of progressive-ish comedians hate Gervais. I assume it's mostly because they're jealous of his success and see this issue as an opportunity to have a go. Luckily Gervais seems immune.

As to why Nish parrots these views on trans rights, I think it's probably because a large number of people on what you might call the left don't think for themselves at all. They represent, as has been pointed out many times on here, the absolutely shining example of a luxury belief.

The weird* thing about the progressive-ish hate towards Gervais is that he’s perfectly progressive himself (New Atheist type, vegan, animal rights activist, left wing…). He just also happens to think women have rights.

*I say weird but it’s obviously a feature, people like JKR get the worst of it.

Is Nish going to dine out on that bread roll forever?

He uses it to show he knows what true suffering is.

The thing is, nish has over achieved in his career by agreeing with certain narratives and lazy brexit and trump jokes. He's not thick, so it makes sense for him to follow the same side and say women have brain worms if they say no to men.

He obviously hasnt given it much thought beyond 'why else would women say no but moral panic or hysteria. 'Just be kind' is the weakest of reasons to include men in changing rooms with teen girls. And it looks dreadful coming from a middle aged bloke.

He's a political comedian, so theres no way he's unaware of isla bryson and the GRR in scotland, so im not sure what else, other than not listening, is his excuse for being caught off guide when a woman challenges his attitude.

JanesLittleGirl · 29/08/2023 22:00

At the risk of being accused of sitting on the fence, Nish Kumar is about as funny as piles and has the political insight of a bicycle.

Glamourreader · 29/08/2023 22:27

He always came across to me as arrogant and a lazy thinker.

So happy Lowri put him right. A shero in my book.

Good evening. I'm Piles! Lovely to be here this evening i was supposed to be number 2 on the bill tonight, but the weather is shit this evening and I got caught in a bleeding pile up! what a pain in the arse that was! So I'm sorry that we are going to over run and I'm protruding into your drinking time, which is a pain and rather irritating as I know you're all itching to get to the bar and the loo!

Yeah you're right he is about as funny as Piles!

AutumnCrow · 30/08/2023 00:50

Good evening, FWR! I'm Bicycle, I'm here with my political insights. So, first, I thought we could start with a list a goodies, and then move on to a list of baddies. <Waits for applause.>

I don’t think they hate Ricky Gervais because of his views, they hate him because he’s successful and has got the career they wish they had.

Do you see RG earning a crust on countless unfunny BBC / Ch 4 / Ch 5 panel shows with diversity quotas? No. Do you see any of them hosting glitzy US awards ceremonies? No.

Him making jokes that are edgy, and actually funny, but not on the ‘things you’re allowed to say in the bbc and still be given work’ list give them the excuse they are looking for to put the boot in. They hate Michael Macintyre too - and he’s as inoffensive as you can get, but funny and successful.

Yes, I forgot for a second that we were dealing with bitter comedians.

Impressive answer and so quick! I can never think of good comebacks until hours later if at all! He was rubbish at tasks on TM!

JenniferBarkley · 30/08/2023 09:38

It's a shame the host spoke over him and didn't allow him to respond, which clearly puzzled him.

I suspect that given that Lowri is frequently on this show and knows that JV (and therefore accolyte Storm) are firmly part of the BBC inspired trans rights are always rights, that she is well practised in putting forward the women's rights position.

It's a shame the host spoke over him and didn't allow him to respond, which clearly puzzled him.

JV doesn't want any open discussion about trans rights. The stand in presenter will have been well briefed to stir away from the topic.

.
Its worth remembering the JV got this slot because the previous presenter wouldn't apologise on behalf of a guest who pointed out that a trans woman is born male. And was forced out.

And this from a programme made by the news service ITN - speaks volumes.

So JV got an extra show that he certainly doesn't need the income from as one of BBC's highest paid employees, by back stabbing a colleague because he is happy to be a trans cheer leader.

Absolutely. I loved Matthew Wright, and will always appreciate the stance he took.

I didn’t know that, wow! I always much preferred Matthew Wright to Jeremy Vine. He has charm, Vine hasn’t.

(I spoke to Vine once on his R2 show, right after Gary Lineker and right before Nigel Farage! I managed to tell Farage he was a big problem in our society, and so are the people who think he “speaks a lot of common sense”.)

IwantToRetire · 30/08/2023 19:01

I didn't know he had done the show for 18 years. That's quite a stand to take.

Matthew Wright quit The Wright Stuff - host refused to apologise over Chase star's transgender jibe
Matthew was summoned to 'crisis talks' with producers after refusing to issue an apology for a comment Anne Hegerty had made to trans activist Paris Lees

MavisMcMinty · 30/08/2023 19:12

And the article says that nobody had even complained! Not Lees, and not the viewers. Bloody blimey. How scared everyone is of the TRAs.

Awww, so sad the full clip is gone where we see his response to Lowri's very sensible correction: open mouth, wide eyes, pause where his brain is clearly trying to work out how it is that a WOMAN spoke, with views clearly showing up his own. He thinks nah, didn't happen...did it? Oh God it did (then presenter interjects with a "look, a squirrel" to save his blushes). Golden.

SidewaysOtter · 30/08/2023 20:54

There’s zero understanding that women have a right to their own feelings. Nish will never hear women. He couldn’t even understand why Lowri Turner would be talking about women’s rights. To him it’s all about men.

Absolutely. Kumar is a perfect example of the Progressive Lefty Man, who can’t stand any opinion other than Correct Think (“TWAW otherwise you’re not being kind!” and so on) and will be horrifically mocking of anyone who dares think or say otherwise. How could you be so stupid as to be THIS wrong?! Bet you’re a racist AND a Tory Gammon Brexiteer! Hmm

There is only one opinion, and it’s his. Depressingly, I know someone very similar and for all his outward “I’m so kind and liberal”, he’s a creepy misogynist.

FWIW, I’m an old lefty and I don’t really like Ricky Gervais’ comedy either. But Kumar and his ilk are utterly toxic. Good for Lowri, I always liked her!

Well that's the thing, isn't it? It's a handy cloak for the closet misogynist to wear while claiming the moral high ground. I'm sure it fits JV like a glove: bumptious, obnoxious, opinionated man that he is.

I admire these women like Lowri Turner and JKR so much. It's hard to be in the public eye and take a stance like this at the risk of being called a bigot. Because people rarely read/see what you actually say, they read someone's interpretation of what you said, which is invariably negatively biased.

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/08/2023 08:49

He’s always been a ranty twat.

That's exactly what it is. A way for men who don't actually like women/resent them/whatever to carry on being misogynist arseholes while blaming women for it.

And I'd add 'sneering' to that list.
