On twitter it's entitled "ex drag queen."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-66610787

Andrew Way, 61, of Clwyd Wen, Wrexham, admitted trying to engage in sexual communication with a child of 14 and had repeatedly breached a sexual harm prevention order.

Way had also been organising the first-ever gay Pride event for Welshpool, Powys.

That's horrific.

Not sure why it matters that he was a drag queen?

PermanentTemporary · 25/08/2023 05:07

And on the BBC it's titled 'man'. Not sure* why you've changed it. Reported.

*completely sure

@PermanentTemporary this is what it looks like on Twitter. As per the OP's comment under the title, that's the headline of the article:

It is very clear that this person is a drag queen PermanentTemporary. I wonder if BBC held off until after Pride Month, or if they just didn’t know until now?

It is indeed.

Because unfortunately it's yet another example of someone who is using the current celebration of drag in mainstream media and society to get access to children.

Nobody is suggesting that all drag queens are paedophiles and I'm sure that the majority of drag queens who do solely adult entertainment would be appalled at this.

There are many drag queens that have spoken out saying that drag is not for children because it's not appropriate. It's not surprising that in amongst those who advocate for it, there will be some paedophiles. With libraries falling over themselves to support Drag Queen Story Time and some schools doing the same, you'd be daft not to take the free ticket in if that's your persuasion.

Helleofabore · 25/08/2023 06:34

Just read the article again, so it went through court hence the timing on BBC.

BonfireLady · 25/08/2023 06:47

Some has posted the Reduxx article with the full story a few tweets down.
Ratio-wise, that tweet is getting way more likes per view than the original BBC story.
It's an interesting sign that the public is pushing for better reporting on this issue.

Perhaps because he was organising the local pride event? Which would have brought him into contact with minors while he ignored that order he had against that action ?

He was leveraging his drag queen history to get the event started from what the Reduxx article said. I also imagine that he used his being a drag queen to be a point of discussion with vulnerable boys and teens to progress conversations.

Why not mention it? Particularly if he has used it to continue to talk to boys? It is a story that I am sure would engage more interest in him.

As Bonfire says, this is a male who is drag queen, just like NAMALT, we already know Nadqalt, but at least the same % of drag queens will be sex offenders as the rest of the male population. Why would it not be mentioned he was a drag queen?

Helleofabore · 25/08/2023 06:56

I wonder if the council pulled the event because they discovered Way had a sexual harm prevention order from 2007?

Maybe they just got a DBA check down or it was found out via other means?

Faffertea · 25/08/2023 07:12

I’m not on Twitter/X. Can someone share the Reduxx article please.

He was a famous drag queen for 40 years. A public figure who had many fans. If he were a priest or an actor that would be mentioned, so why not drag queen? Why hide his profession when they wouldn't do it for anyone else?

They changed the title after trans activists complained. Because, I'm not sure why* but some trans activists were desperate* that his occupation not be named.

*I'm completely sure why

Sueveneers · 25/08/2023 07:18

You can bet your life if it were a priest BBC would leave that in the title, no matter how many clergy, priests or parishoners complained.

Triselly · 25/08/2023 07:30

Oh look, that thing that never happens has happened again.

Justme56 · 25/08/2023 07:31

It’s still up as ‘ex drag queen’ on the BBC feed on X (Twitter) with 600+ comments.

Swamphag · 25/08/2023 07:31

Triselly · 25/08/2023 07:30

Oh look, that thing that never happens has happened again.

Came here to say exactly that.

For things that never happen, these things seem to happen quite frequently

HairyKitty · 25/08/2023 07:37

At 7.37am bbc article says man with no mention of drag queen…

Helleofabore · 25/08/2023 07:42

I hope complaints go in to BBC about their lack of symmetry in handling this. What other sex offender would have a significant fact that was relevant to the case suppressed?

There is little impartiality being shown here.

WarriorN · 25/08/2023 07:54

I actually thought it was interesting that Twitter had DQ and bbc site didn't...

mrshoho · 25/08/2023 08:03

I would like to say a big thank you to the groups who dedicate so much time to catch these paedophiles and produce the vital evidence to ensure they are prosecuted. Thank you.

WarriorN · 25/08/2023 08:04

They'd have no qualms saying "ex teacher" or "ex police officer" or "mother" either, would they?

If DQ want us to see DQ as a reputable profession now, one that also goes into schools to teach <something?> and publishes research papers and books for children, rather than just adult entertainment, surely pertinent information in these cases is relevant?

He must have had a certain position of trust or respect in the local community in order to organise pride?

I started a thread on this earlier and linked to another article which goes into much more detail about his past:
