Time to take back language - a manifesto discussion thread

One of the anti women lobby's key tools is language.

Okay, calling women non-men is, as yet, still a step too far. But much of their success is in redefing language.

I would like to suggest that MN FWR creates a new lexicon, that recentres the discussion on to women's rights. I realise this thread might get deleted, but worth a try.

What words and phrases do think need alternatives and what would you suggest?

@Moomoola and @jackles have both had comments deleted.

Could @mumsnet share the blacklisted words with us?

Thank you for the link further up.

Transvestite is a good word because it emphasises the superficiality of clothes and other decorations. I might go back to transvestite male now.

I don't know whether it is still going but there used to be a touring acrobat troupe called something like 'Trans Identified Minors of the Thai Capital'. Not sure their actual name would get past the MN censor now.

You'll have to email them. There is no @mumsnet or @mnhq

Now I see this topic has older threads and Sex Matters has a dictionary.

@jackles was the l*b** one. I saw it but I couldn't repeat it to warn or my comment would have been zapped too.

Yes, I was going to say "Alan Partridge vibes" but I figured there was no point as it was going to get deleted anyway..

IcakethereforeIam · 03/07/2023 15:51

Non-binary -> Nobi, pronounced....well <waves at MN> guess*

*starts with a silent k and ends with a y.

Avoiding jargon I would just use terms like prejudice or discrimination in the case where that is what we are talking about.

However mostly it is simply the case that “doesn’t believe in gender identity ideology” covers it since most supposed “transphobia” basically seems to boil down to believing that sex is significant and subjective inner feelings are an inefficient way to try and run pretty much anything in society or not believing in compelled speech, that anyone can be born in the wrong body, that women should undress in front of men to bolster the man’s self image etc.

dcbc1234 · 03/07/2023 16:19

I always use 'gender identity ideology' aka 'gender woo' to try to make it clear that it is made-up anti-science.
Never use 'cis'.
We women want our stuff, awards etc and language back.

dcbc1234 · 03/07/2023 16:21

I have found myself saying 'I believe in Biology' which is ironic given that that is how Maya had to frame her argument as a 'belief' when until 5 minutes ago it was a scientific fact which no one disputed.

dcbc1234 · 03/07/2023 16:25

BellaAmorosa · 02/07/2023 22:31

@GrumpyPanda
I didn't know that. Are you talking about the UK?

I don't believe this to be true for the UK.

dcbc1234 · 03/07/2023 16:36

Zoe Strimpel in the Telegraph yesterday used 'gender obsessives' which means we must be sex obsessives lol.
'Gender obsessives will never let reality stand in the way of theory, Social justice ideology, diversity and inclusion, intersectionality all began as academic theories. They now rule over us'

PomegranateOfPersephone · 03/07/2023 16:48

I think avoiding TRA is a good idea. Gender identity zealots as proposed earlier, sounds accurate for some, also proponents of gender identity, gender identity ideologues, gender identity believers, gendered soul believers, pronoun people and alphabet people depending on who I’m talking with! The last two are a bit jargony I’ll admit but when you say pronoun people everyone seems to know what you mean 🤣

winchfem · 03/07/2023 16:55

I think it's difficult to use the term 'mutilation,' as not only as it not accurate (cosmetic surgeries are not inherently 'violent or disfiguring', the instances where cosmetic surgeries go wrong is a different matter) but it appeals to emotion over logic. Surely referring to the procedures by their names, 'cosmetic double mastectomy', etc., creates a far more even playing field for debate than immediately giving people reason to feel defensive?

Or non medical double mastectomy.

I've even tried putting this into a crossword solver and still can't work it out. Any chance of a clue or pm so I can add it to my "words not to use" list please

IcakethereforeIam · 03/07/2023 17:43

Opposite of Lordgirl, it originally had the requested number of asterisks but there must be a shortage or something.
