What's being 'woke' all about?

What's being 'woke' all about?

It originally meant “awake to racial injustice” and grew out of the historic black emancipation movement in the US.

The original meaning has been perverted (in much the same way that ‘gay’ became an insult) and is used by racists (against black activists), by climate change deniers (against climate change campaigners), by misogynists (against feminists) and, unfortunately, by some GC people (against TRAs).

DojaPhat · 20/08/2023 18:48

@BCCoach Hmmm, it's not lost on me that its newly fangled meaning has been welcomed if not absolutely embraced by this board. A fantastic catch-all word which allows everyone to shout the quiet part extremely loudly. What a welcome relief.

What's being 'woke' all about?

As far as I know, it was originally about being "awake to social or racial injustice" and was a term used by some in the black community.

Then it briefly got taken over by white liberals who would use the term also.

Then conservatives turned it around and mocked the fuck out of them.

So as conservatives use the term it's mocking people that think they are "awake to injustice" but are really just self deluded, or virtue signalling, or believe in some very questionable far left ideas.

Kimchikeffir · 20/08/2023 19:58

Meanings change, woke no longer means what it did several years ago.

JamSandle · 20/08/2023 20:12

Companies should sell products and stop getting political.

TrainedByCats · 20/08/2023 20:28

Tesco should be on that list, they featured Jane Fae

Does make supermarkets tricky as Asda had some dodgy advertising.

Morrisons is ok I think. I’m trying to support more independent shops anyway rather than use the big supermarkets for everything

Awittyfool · 22/08/2023 00:29

Surely we should be better than applying labels to types ie woke, racists, TERFs etc. We all know lovely people that think trans is something to fight for. We all know feminists we dislike.

Stick to facts. You can’t change sex. Single sex is for a reason.

Wow Christmas round your gaffs is going to be insanely class🔥

Don't worry though, your children probably already think you're embarrassing

If you want to take things to a personal level then maybe consider the saying, "people in glass houses..."!

I always wonder what's left going by some of these lists 😁
Fresh air and twigs at this rate

BabyStopCryin · 31/08/2023 21:12

There are plenty of suppliers who just… y’know, sell stuff.

BlackForestCake · 31/08/2023 22:21

What charity shops can I still give my old stuff to without the proceeds going to promote child abuse?

BabyStopCryin · 31/08/2023 23:02

Any local hospices or children’s hospitals?

Look for smaller local charities

Oh no! It's my local shop!

Moomoola · 20/09/2023 09:15

Trouble is, I’m feeling less and less included as I am a 50 plus woman. I don’t see any companies accepting me for having a ‘hot flush’ or being a chubby old bint with no tattoos.

Capitalismwantsyou · 20/09/2023 11:12

god, is Amazon the only place to buy stuff now? noooo

Perhaps that was the masterplan all along - the whole corporate world promotes a false version of 'diversity and inclusion' prioritising the TQ+ over all other groups to annoy their customers, so that the one on-line retailer left can clean up?
I love Amazon. I wish they would advise the NHS on logistics but we need competition in any market.
