Is anyone here going to this? I'm pondering whether to go and whether it will be safe.

There's a tram you can catch from New Street Station to Centenary Square.

So, anyone up for a coffee or something beforehand?

Hope everyone is OK. Just seen on Twitter that it took the West Midlands Police a long time to show up. Also a tweet from an hour or two ago saying the TRAs were being escorted by police towards the LWS contingent. Hmm Usual pictures of young white males wearing masks, hoods up, vs happy, relaxed women of all ages, various ethnicities.

Boiledbeetle · 14/05/2023 14:02

TRA pretending to be a detransitioner spoke and then tried to break the equipment!

Annoyingwurringnoise · 14/05/2023 14:02

bum, if I’d known I would’ve gone.

That talk by the transman was so weird, I'd really like to know what is going on in their head. I wonder what sex they thought the audience would think they are? For me, when they came up I thought that they were either a gay teenage boy (the voice and mannerisms seemed quite camp, and they are quite short so perhaps not fully grown) or a woman who had taken cross sex hormones to make their voice deeper. But not a straight or adult man by any stretch of the imagination. When they said they were a detransitioner I thought 'OK, that makes sense', a woman with an oddly lowered, but not quite masculine voice and of short stature. Did this person think they looked like a man and the audience would think so too? They then went on to make a speech that didn't fit with the kind of speeches normally given at the LWS events. First of all the 'hey ladies' - is not the usual way these crowds are addressed, which to me shows this person thinks of the crowd as an 'other' and in restrictive, gender stereotyped terms. They then go on to use TRA language and rhetoric, 'the other side' 'trying to silence us and kill us' 'people want me dead' - again, this kind of simplistic, hyperbolic black and white language is not what you normally hear at these events, it is more women sharing the stories of their lives and how this ideology has affected them or pissed them off. They then do the big reveal 'I am a transman and all of you are fucking terfs' then try to unscrew the mic. It was all very anti-climatic. Nobody threw anything, reacted with violence, or even made any noise, if anything there was only pity that seemed to come across from the crowd for this poor kid caught up in a cult. What KJK said to follow up was spot on, about the compassion we all feel for those caught up in this.

cheshirecatssmile · 14/05/2023 15:11

I spoke so bloody nervous but found my voice

Lovely to meet you and great speech

porridgeisbae · 14/05/2023 16:12

@cheshirecatssmile lol well I didn't say much.

You were awesome. x

cheshirecatssmile · 14/05/2023 17:18

Thank you

Norma27 · 15/05/2023 00:34

@cheshirecatssmile i was there and your speech was amazing. I held back a violent TRA who tried to rush in at the beginning- then squeezed for police when he had to finally retreat. Strangely the police then suddenly turned up for hulking great men. There are lots of complaints going to WMP and I urge others to complain if they were there and saw how awful the police presence was to protect women.

Whatthechicken · 15/05/2023 02:55

The first event I have taken my daughter to and I was so horrified at the lack of police presence that I sent my daughter shopping with her Gran. It did not feel safe and the lack of police felt deliberate. Thankfully my daughter got to see the end, got to see the wonderful stewards dancing and got to go to the pub with all the wonderful women. My mum even said how amazing it was to be in a group of so many women. I am so grateful to all the stewards - they did the police’s job for them - very brave women.

Norma27 · 15/05/2023 07:41

The stewards were amazing. I am disgusted with the lack of police presence at first.

AutumnCrow · 15/05/2023 07:58

West Midlands Constabulary has a Labour Party Police & Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster. Up for election next year. He's a lawyer, apparently.

Anyone who was there (and thank you one and all) who wants to express concern at the policing can contact him via the website, using the 'Contact' form.

For complaints about specific officers, there's a 'Complaints' page.

Yes, just saw that. Silly wee numpty.

If she reflects (doubtful, I know, because to be so mired in the ideology she will have had to give up some critical thinking skills) she will realise that KJK straightaway saw her as female.

Vagina havers first, penis people if there's time at LWS events

Helleofabore · 15/05/2023 08:27

What a great job the stewards and all who helped them did! Thank you Norma if you were helping. It is a surreal experience to be face to face with these protestors. And most of the time they have no idea what beliefs the women who are gathered there have.

I cannot believe the lack of policing there.

Helleofabore · 15/05/2023 08:48

The speaker who was clearly female and allowed to speak and who did so, felt they had to lie and was clearly under some kind of impression that Kellie Jay doesn’t allow all female people to speak. That young person could have stood there and tried to convince others. Instead they pretended to be someone they are not with the aim to destroy equipment.

It always is the same. The extreme activist infiltrates the inner group using deception with the intent to steal or destroy equipment or to cause physical harm. They give away their own opportunity to present their point of view, throw around mantras or slurs and then attempt to remove the ability for others to speak. Whenever they do this, they must think this is a ‘win’ for them. The reality is that they show that they belong to a group who have no intention of discussing the conflicts with another groups rights, that there are no solid facts underpinning their beliefs and they are dishonest in their intentions.

They show yet again they are abusive of others who they don’t agree with.

I am not sure they will realise just how they contradict what they are trying to achieve. They are trying to present themselves as honest and righteous. But they show they are the opposite when they do this.

ArabeIIaScott · 15/05/2023 09:01

Yes, it would be interesting to hear a trans activist actually stay to speak, to give their side, rather than fling insults and try to destroy stuff.

InterestingUsernameTBC · 15/05/2023 09:18

Some protesters held a sign that said, 'Let trans ally women speak'. They clearly don't understand that they are welcome to speak. As women, they are just as free to stand up and give their opinion. There was one woman who spoke who started off with an apology that she had once been on the trans activist side and she had denounced a group of women for their pro-women stance. The group of women she had denounced interrupted her, began to jeer at her, said she was a liar and Kellie-Jay said, 'Let her speak', and she finished her speech. It really is an event to Let Women Speak, all women.

cheshirecatssmile · 15/05/2023 11:32

We held the line and a women came up to speak. Unfortunately she had been seen holding a tra sign.
She wanted to speak on the behalf of the men. She said but I'm a woman I should be allowed.
Explaining to a woman that this was for women to speak for women. She walked away and went back to holding her sign.

I then realised I had gone there to speak so made excuses and the rest is history.

So disappointed with the police. I will be filing a complaint
