A Mumsnet thread about a book about a Mumsnet thread “Under the Duvet of Darkness” written by the women of Mumsnet

For once we can do a thread about a new book where all the writers are actually on this very board!

Some of you know what I have been up to recently, when I can tear myself away from posting twaddle, gifs and sweary words in bigly letters on here, but for the rest of you…

Over Christmas and New Year after the passing of the GRR (Scotland) Bill a thread was started by TerfranosaurusVagina on the Mumsnet FWR board with a poem about Nicola Sturgeon. Eventually on that thread (and a couple of other threads) over 80 poems were written.

Ramblingnamechanger suggested we do something with them to raise funds to help the women of Scotland and whilst Dodecaheidyin was tempted to write to Poetry Please on Radio 4, and ask them to do an extended special for Hogmanay about our poems, in the end it was decided to make the thread into a book.

After much procrastination by me “Under the Duvet of Darkness: Poems written by angry women for angry women because WOMEN WON’T WHEESHT” went live on Amazon on 31st March

https://amzn.eu/d/98aEnJy

If searching on the site you need to:

Select BOOKS as the department and UNDER THE DUVET OF DARKNESS in the search box.

Currently it doesn’t show up in the main all departments search (I don’t know why or if it will, it takes a while for everything to work properly according to Amazon).

Theres also a QR code below which should take you right there (hopefully the attached works)

MONEY FROM SALES:

In honour of Magdalen Berns, who co-founded the Scottish campaign group For Women Scotland, 100% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to For Women Scotland.*

*Please note that whilst the profit will be donated to For Women Scotland they are not involved, nor are they responsible in any way for the themes, contents or publication of this book.

I managed to order the Marion Keyes one the first time in error onto my Kindle but Amazon instantly refunded me when I clicked on 'bought in error'.

Whatthechicken · 07/04/2023 19:42

@Pixiedust1234 sending loads of love. Keep safe and keep talking to the wonderful women here (if safe obviously). xx

Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis · 07/04/2023 19:46

It’s here, and I quite like Marian Keyes so might go back and order that too.

I sincerely hope it's not Under the Duvet. That is a marion keyes book as I belatedly discovered about two days before publishing!

Pleaser tell me it also has 'of Darkness' on the end! 😁

I hope you and
@CompleteGinasaur are enjoying reading them!

It is definitely Under the Duvet of Darkness Beetle. Sorry for the stressful comment.

"The duvet of darkness
Seems soft and yielding
But under it grows
Plotting and treachery"

(thank you @FlirtsWithRhinos. )

Boiledbeetle · 07/04/2023 20:17

@beastlyslumber to be fair you do know a lot of the poems! You either wrote them or read the original thread.

@dcbc1234 I knew it would happen! It's not helped that I am permanently, cannot be changed, removed from the main search of all departments because the censors deemed the language was not appropriate for Under 18s. My Twitter pinned tweet is going to be permanent link to the book! It's the only way!I

@Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis good stuff! Of course if you order another book with duvet in its title your search algorithms are going to start sending you bedding adverts.

@MrsOvertonsWindow just didn't want you being a couple of chapters in and going WTF?!?

Ooh more shopping ideas. Back soon

minsmum · 07/04/2023 20:34

Just ordered this and I am looking forward to reading it

Boiledbeetle · 07/04/2023 20:42

Just waiting for the kettle to boil so I'm stood in the 'library' admiring my book on the shelf next to Auden and Lear and Keats. I pulled it out to take a look.

Completely forgot I'd done this. 👇(I know myself too well)

I'm almost surprised you didn't charge more for signed copies...

Boiledbeetle · 07/04/2023 20:50

@dcbc1234 oh but I did! I had to buy it at full price before I'd agree to sign it!

@Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis Do you have no impulse control? At all?

@minsmum admit it you were just waiting to see what the reviews were like weren't you?

I had been on holiday with no internet access so this whole thread passed me by. Then I saw some random post on Twitter.

minsmum · 07/04/2023 20:53

I am also easily manipulated

Britinme · 07/04/2023 20:53

I ordered it and then went away for a week so it should be waiting when I get home on Monday.

minsmum · 07/04/2023 20:55

I am going to tell some colleagues about it on Monday, they are also very angry and sweary

The Amazon sales dashboard is having loading errors (not me but a system wide issue). It keeps glitching in and out like the TARDIS.

I took this earlier. I doubt its changed much.

It's been a slow day, but then it is Good Friday! We are nearly at £550.

@minsmum @Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis my next book is going to be priced at £20. There will be 300 pages of poems with every poem written in white ink.

Can i put you down for pre orders?

@Britinme I hope it's worth the extended wait!

My copy won't be here until Tuesday.

Honestly, they just don't have their priorities right at all.

You should definitely do an ebook.

In the meantime... here's a wip of mine, for your reading displeasure this easter weekend.

STURGEON APPROVED COURT CASE.

I WILL NOT call my rapist 'she'
How DARE you scold
Reality?

Why's THAT MAN owed respect
When he
Showed not a drop
While RAPING ME?

A court concerned
With rapists feelings,
Should never be
In cases dealing

With a mans crime,
Deserving MENS prison time.
Use appropriate pronouns,
Don't condone the theft of mine.

Where is the care for me as a victim?
Why follow Stonewalls quasi dictum?

Why is the prize for this criminal act
Free lipstick & a womens prison rack?

Boiledbeetle · 08/04/2023 00:42

@Brokendaughter a lot of got them earlier than expected! And I doubt they are letting their staff have easter off! It will be one more to add to the total! thank you for buying it. saves me having to buy another copy.

In years to come people are going to wonder why the entire house is wall papered in the same 80 poems! All furniture decoupaged in them!

And thank you for you're rather wonderful poem.

The lovely fairy kindlemother is working very hard to sort out an ebook version! I'm a harsh task master! I HATE E-BOOKS...So it's going well! She may live to regret the offer yet!

I'm going to collect them, the poems point here, all together tidy them up and send them through for her to put them in as a bonus chapter!

So of course everyone will now have to buy the ebook as well!

I'm hopeful it's sooner rather than later!. It depends how long it takes me to get over the fact it's not going to look the same as the book. I'm to busy going 'I Hate e-books '

But I have accepted my limitations of being able to be subjective and now I just sob quietly in the corner whilst fairy kindlemother does very good "there there never mind its going to be all right".

I suspect she is used to actual clients shouting rather than manically crying "I HATE KINDLE".

The actual Sales are still bringing some in, but they are obviously slowing.

I'm not cut out for sales pushing. But the e book will give me another chance to do the "BUY OUR BOOK FOR CHARITY" before i get 🚫 for spamming everyone with book adverts!

Memories of invisible ink. Now if you used glow in the dark ink it could only be read under the duvet of darkness. You could sell that for a lot more to gullible people like me.
@Brokendaughter great poem

@Brokendaughter great poem

I like that idea. But book get free🔦 for when you're under the duvet in complete darkness!o

I've run out of oomph today! I'm knackered.

I honestly wouldn't want to have to make a living this way. I've felt like a door to door saleswoman this week. Every time the door openings there's me wedging my foot in the gap!
