So happy that JKR has tweeted the petition to update the equalities act to make it clear that sex, not gender is a protected characteristic. Responses her tweet are full of the usual smoke and mirrors and mysgnynistic insult– just wanted to collate them to help me better see the tactics of those who seek to dismantle women's rights. Have I missed any?

  1. Trying to make out that JK Rowling is supporting the murder of a transgirl teen. She’s not and has never said anything which could be reasonably interpreted as that. It’s perfectly possible to imagine a society where transgirls use the facilities for their biological sex and aren’t murdered. It’s a travesty and a tragedy if anyone is murdered just for being trans identifying and JK Rowing very clearly agrees with that. We’ve spent years trying to work towards just such a society for gay men who are more at risk than heterosexual men. No-one blames women for not letting them into the ladies if bad things happen in the men’s.

  2. Pictures of transwomen asking what would happen if they went into the men’s. Firstly, most TW don’t pass outside of photos but also see above. Secondly, the TW are focusing on the signifiers of dress and hair and makeup but that’s not relevant to many. I don’t care what men wear, but their gait, girth, voice and adam’s apple etc. show them very clearly to be men. The problem here is male violence. If men have a problem with other males wearing dresses and make-up in their facilities then the men are the problem. You can want to wear these things and not be trans identifying so moving all the TW into the ladies doesn’t really solve the problem even if you ignore the dangers to women which this does.

  3. “You’ve already lost this battle so why are you still banging on about it?”. Would those misogynists have said that to the suffragettes. This particular comment is very clearly a ‘back in your box’ one.

  4. “you’re trying to force people to discriminate” – well that one’s just ridiculous. Keeping males out of female only spaces is clearly not discriminating!

  5. “You’d have to check genitals” – also clearly ridiculous. I guess that person has not heard of secondary sexual characteristics or is choosing to pretend they’ve not. “you’re making it such that all women have to produce ID to enter any female space” – same sort of nonsense really

  6. “some males do pass” yes but the vast majority don’t and if you let passing males in, you have to also let in ant other man who ‘feels like a woman’.

  7. “feminism is for all women”. Yes that’s the point. TW are men. If you want to dispute that, give us a definition of women which includes all those people who are women and all those people who feel like women and don’t rely on gender identity cos so many women don’t have one.

Typical rubbish from TRAs, I see. Good that JKR has tweeted about EA2010.

CountZacular · 08/03/2023 17:44

I’ve not seen her post or replies, but honestly it’s the same old crap from TRAs and I don’t think the actual majority are buying it anymore.

But more importantly great to hear JKR has tweeting the petition. I can already see number rising rapidly!

"The problem here is male violence. If men have a problem with other males wearing dresses and make-up in their facilities then the men are the problem."
How nice of them - on IWD, of all days - to try to make out that it's women who are the problem.Angry
Is there a petition anywhere that we could sign?Wink

nepeta · 08/03/2023 18:30

But the numbers on the Update the Equality Act petition have today gone up by around 8000, and it's now looking like 100 000 is reachable by the deadline. Nothing much might come out of this, but perhaps more public debate, at a minimum.

Boymamabee · 08/03/2023 18:38

Does this apply to someone who’s obtained a gender recognition certificate? Just trying to understand.

howmanybicycles · 08/03/2023 18:53

What do you mean @Boymamabee Do you think recognising someone's gender means they should be able to access the spaces reserved for the opposite sex? If so, can you tell me why we need spaces segregated by gender and how, if there are over 100 genders, we should choose how to put in each of the two spaces?

I didn't realise she'd Tweeted it.
The petition is going up by lots and I thought it was me being brave and sharing it with my friends.

Ha.

Good on Jo.

Meanwhile back in the real world ie not twitter one of the least used social media platforms locally there is this news.

BBC ‘set to renew JK Rowling’s Strike adaptation’ after apologising to author over trans comments
uk.news.yahoo.com/bbc-reportedly-set-renew-jk-215131468.html

I suspect they were always going to, but the papers (also a minority like twitter) love to stoke the fires.

donquixotedelamancha · 08/03/2023 19:34

Yes, yes they would. Frankly I think some of them would love to remove the right to vote now.

WhisperingAutistic · 08/03/2023 19:34

Wonderful to see the amount of signatures going up that fast! Every time I click on it, there are loads more.

I've been keeping an eye on the petition since it was launched - the early euphoria when it went like the clappers giving way to the frustratingly slow progress over the last couple of months. It's been wonderful to see it taking off again. Couldn't believe it when I saw it was over 90,000 before I left work this evening, and over 93,000 by the time I got home. It's prompted me to do my 'ask 10 people' which I've been meaning to do for ages but haven't quite got round to. How brilliant would it be if the petition reached 100,000 today.

Gosh, almost as if the SNP don't actually have widespread support for their gender lunacy amongst Scottish voters, isn't it?

This is just more desperate flailing from transactivists. Embarrassing and shameful in turn.

People are beginning to really appreciate the hatchet job done on JKR. And, of course, it results in all the sunlight shining on the dirty tricks.

So glad she tweeted the petition. She's on it. All of it. The podcast about her witchhunt is illuminating.

BettyFilous · 08/03/2023 20:49

It’s looking like the petition could top 100k by midnight. 🤞

Yes!! Women's rights coming within a whisker of being eroded in law has concentrated the minds of voters in Scotland. Especially Edinburgh!

Datdamndamp · 08/03/2023 21:21

Just clicked on it and it's updating in real time. As an early signer and sharer I'm so excited.

PatatiPatatras · 08/03/2023 21:27

Looks like women are clicking on IWD. 95k and counting.

Ourladycheesusedatum · 08/03/2023 21:35

i'm on the latest one of her witch trial podcasts, and she said she's been a feminist since she was about 16 or 17 and all she has ever done is centre women and girls.

By God, she's a dream to have in your corner.
