Bit of light relief. The Buttergasp has fallen.

On GB News
'You admit [trans women] should not be in women's prisons?'

'Of course they shouldn't.'

'So you're a TERF?'

It's over. It is so over.

I'd like to hope so, sincerely, but I fear that it's only the beginning of the end, which may only be a slow decline.

I’ll be guilty of an MN and feminist crime but I have to say I actually have some time for BB and follow him on Twitter. I’ve suspected for a while that he’s been wavering. He’s been massively wrong, but I think he was trying to be right, and I think he does have a heart. I know!

I've wondered about some of them and thought that the deprogramming might happen over time - cracks starting to show. Also that very vulnerable and well meaning people tend to get sucked in.
Not sure Butt is either but who knows.

I worry about what other outrages are about to happen to be honest. Each time there is some light something even more terrifying happens. How did we get to the point?

SinnerBoy · 31/01/2023 12:52

I don't know, I think it was ever thus, outrage upon outrage, with the press and television looking for something fresh, as the current one became stale.

That does appear to have been what most of the Trans Rights advocates have been doing for the last decade.

They knew they were right, and on the right side of history.

They had their 'No debate' to stop any questions of their pronouncement.

And of course in their head nothing was ever going to go wrong. They were never going to have to actually stop and think. Because they were right.

They didn't even need to listen to the other side. What was the point they are just bigots and transphobes talking shit.

So yes I reckon BB and all the others have just been doing what you said.

he has his list of points he wants to make and continues to rehearse them in his head while the ‘opponents’ speak, so he never actually listens, hears or learns.

I think it is worth taking a look at the famous Buttergasp again https://twitter.com/OkBiology/status/1306635799765676032?s=20&t=h52j5fmU61P3-7soIrrj2g

I can imagine he is there, his mind mentally rehearsing “twaw tmam nbpav twaw tmam nbpav”

And when Bev says:

”Some people believe that they were born in the wrong body.
Now we don’t, personally, believe that anybody can be born in the wrong body”

he somehow made the mistake of listening for a moment, when he simply wasn’t ready and prepared to hear an alternative point of view- that’s why the exaggerated gasp of shock and disbelief. He was stumped.

Madamecastafiore · 31/01/2023 13:02

Is that his real name??

Benjamin Butterworth does sound like a character in a Dickens novel. Maybe his parents thought it had a ring.

I can't actually remember his real name. Buttergasp is so appropriate, and when I wrack my brains I get the unlikely 'Ben Buttercup', or Benjamin Button.

Thing it must be butterworth. Even that sounds unlikely now, though.

I've observed the same and I think I may have commented on him in a previous thread. I'm not sure it's about heart though.

I suspect he's typical of many people who without parsing a single critical thought hopped aboard the runaway train as it was gaining steam and are now wondering how to make it stop so they can get off.

There's going to be a lot of Benjamin's in the years to come.

See also Alyn Smith being interviewed this morning.

I kind of agree with this. He's no Owen Jones. He's a useful idiot, but I think his heart is in the right place. He's one of many idiots who's cognitive dissonance is exploding this week.

But how embarrassing to have to admit that your listening comprehension skills are literally that bad.

This was what we have been trying to say. On repeat. And you would not hear.

ickky · 31/01/2023 13:22

Oh dear, the Gasp has fallen. 😂😂😂

Wow! That's like he just stood on lego! That moment when reality crashes into your sleep walk to the kettle at 5am.

KatMcBundleFace · 31/01/2023 13:36

Oh it's all common sense now is it?

Well, it's common sense in a lot of situations other than just prisons, and for this women have been bullied, doxed, threatened.

Buttergrasp is just a third rate little Owen Jones rent a gob, but by suggesting TW should be in a male prison, he has broken the mantra.

You'll be hearing from my lawyers 🤣

BlueBooh · 31/01/2023 17:28

Anyone got a screen shot. His tweet appears to have been deleted!

Tabitha1960 · 31/01/2023 19:37

Genuine question.

Who is this Benny Buttercup fellow and why on earth is this man-child wheeled in every time the subject of trans right vs women's rights is brought up?

He isn't a woman!

He isn't trans!

He isn't even non binary, just a regular young bloke but with a passion to take away women's rights.

And it's not like he's a mature and sage social commentator with a solid and long career as a journalist.

He's an absolute nobody who suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

HOW does he keep getting himself invited to take part in these shows?

picklemewalnuts · 31/01/2023 20:08

People are all waiting with bated breath for the next gasp...

NicolaSturgeonsSOGIbottom · 31/01/2023 20:10

Because supposedly the entire LGBTQIA2S++ ‘community’ only needs a couple of spokesfolx per show circuit and Buttergasp managed to get his feet under the ITV/Talk TV/GB News tables early doors due to the actual TRAs stating NO DEBATE and refusing to come out from behind their anime avatars.

It basically comes down to Benny the Gasp or India WillyWilloughby.
Benjamin Cohen used to be the third option but not since that cheeky NI news fella made a total prick of him on that Investigating Stonewall podcast.

Lesbians were not consulted. Obvs.

EasterIsland · 31/01/2023 20:33

Awwww, he’s deleted it! Can anyone point me to the GBNews programme? I know, I know re GB News, but Andrew Doyle’s Free speech Nation can be amusing.

NicolaSturgeonsSOGIbottom · 31/01/2023 20:42

NicolaSturgeonsSOGIbottom · 31/01/2023 11:19

I’m not mad keen on a hectoring interview style either (prefer a quiet, Louis Theroux pincer movement) but if you watch the 8 minute segment and not the 4 minute Twitter version it’s a lot more good natured and I suspect Dan and Benjamin are actually pretty friendly towards one another off screen.

The wider context shows Dan being supportive of the women on the panel and finding commonalities between them and Benjamin, and then the bit on Twitter happens, but in context it’s more like Mrs Doyle offering Father Ted a cup of tea than snidey Piers Morgan.

Lazily quoting my own post for @EasterIsland !

EasterIsland · 01/02/2023 08:43

Thanks @NicolaSturgeonsSOGIbottom (great name!) I’m the lazy one, not reading TFT.

I’ve not watched Dan Wooten before - I’m intrigued by his accent and almost mesmerised by his eyes! But the programme seems to be the Daily Mail brought to life.

The whole thing is now being shown for the hypocrisy that some of us always knew was there. Some of us remember the “truscum” insults thrown at transsexuals such as Miranda Yardley back in, ooo, 2017 or so.

NicolaSturgeonsSOGIbottom · 01/02/2023 09:53

Wootton was born to British parents in NZ and grew up there, moving here in his early 20s. I suspect the accent is a largely theatrical, or at least began that way! It’s sort of Kiwi undertone, RADA luvvie overlay?

Wootton has a very murky history in the showbiz section of print journalism (The Sun, News of the World, Now! Magazine) but he definitely has some serious insider contacts as he is credited with breaking the ‘Megxit’.

He’s also the journo who called Johnny Depp a ‘vile wifebeater’ and thus kicked off the UK court case, the one that Johnny Depp lost to The Sun.

(‘Vile’ is one of Wootton’s pet terms)

I wouldn’t say I like him, he certainly thrives off controversy , but he’s not afraid to tackle topics head on and as such is one of the few that has always platformed terfy wimms, perhaps mostly due to his love of stirring up drama but nonetheless it has helped get our viewpoint to a bigger audience (see also: Daily Mail 😬)

I find it interesting that women have been both the biggest critics AND the biggest panderers to TRAs, and it seems that there is a similar split amongst gay men - Dan Wootton and Benjamin Buttergasp are from either side of that community divide.

It’s good they are both on one program, because as we know, whenever that happens, the protrans argument collapses and they are reduced to whimpering ‘Be Kind’ at the nasty strident people who refuse to say that some women have penises.

GB News is a mixed bag, all the way from the awfulness of Nigel Farage ‘Talking Pints’ to the brilliance of Andrew Doyle ‘Free Speech Nation’. They really do try and have a wider conversation than is the usual at present but that’s hard when so many protrans commentators won’t debate (or even sit next to Kellie Jay because: cooties).

TLDR: Dan Wootton is an odd and not immediately likeable character but he has consistently platformed women with terfy views. I wouldn’t trust him with any celebrity secrets but I reckon he probably loves and respects his mother and would back up Carole Malone in a fist fight if required.

NicolaSturgeonsSOGIbottom · 01/02/2023 10:06

Here’s an older clip of Buttergasp on Dan Wootton Tonight where Ben the Gasp says ‘he couldn’t care less about prisoners’

EasterIsland · 01/02/2023 12:41

Oh how wonderful to splash that ALL over Twitter.

BB really is a snake, not a journalist ...

picklemewalnuts · 01/02/2023 12:56

I find BB hard to recognise. He is burned in my brain with that Dick Emery pout in the original gasping incident.

Without that hammy petulance, he's really very forgettable.
