What fresh hell is this... Pronouns book for 5+

Saw this in a very prominent position in the children's section of my local library. Says for 5+. I despair.
It includes template letters for sending to your teachers and parent friends demanding that you respect your child's pronouns.

Can you imagine if they actually let five year olds decide on terminology to refer to them. It would be far more exciting than they/he/she/them. My DD would have been ironman princess or black widow super cat at that age.

StephanieSuperpowers · 23/12/2022 19:22

Wow, that's a lot of text on a fairly boring topic for five year olds. Mine would have wandered off long before deciding they were elf/elfself or whatever.

Not written or selected by people who are five familiar, I would say.

SinnerBoy · 23/12/2022 19:28

The publishers are probably rubbing their hands with glee, after the Welsh Education Department won their case at the High Court, today. Now, they can legally indoctrinate 3 year olds with trans propaganda.

ResisterRex · 23/12/2022 19:31

Kids that ages would have zero interest in "pronoun etiquette". They're interested in:

  • Father Christmas
  • what the tooth fairy leaves them when their teeth fall out
  • questions like: what if the guinea pig was real and I took him to school with me? No but just say he was real mummy, could I? It would be so funny!

Whoever wrote this has never met a real 5yo.

I agree that with the Wales decision, it's the kind of dogma we can expect more of.

There's another one on Amazon which is for children from babies to 3.
See this 5 star review:

"My seven month old loves the book for the pictures of people and I appreciate being able to introduce her to this concept from the start of her verbal development."

Reminds me of Victorian books I have read when there was so much emphasis on etiquette and social ritual, which corner of your visiting card you had to turn down to indicate you would accept a return visit etc etc.

Maybe societies that are above subsistence level develop these kinds of rituals whether we think they make any sense or not.

Fieldfly · 23/12/2022 22:53

There is a picture of a child wearing a headscarf on the front. I wonder how many headscarf wearing children (or indeed adults) refer to themselves as other than the sex that they are?

Boiledbeetle · 24/12/2022 00:43

At five I declared I was a beetle. When asked if I was a boy beetle or a girl beetle I replied "a boiled beetle"

I wonder what their suggestions of pronouns would have been for five year old me?

WarriorN · 24/12/2022 07:20

I'm sure they've got that covered; a girl on tiktok was helpfully explaining her pronouns to be bug and dirt the other day.

WarriorN · 24/12/2022 07:21

More seriously; this kind of shite is appallingly uninclusive for children who have EAL or a speech and language / learning difficulty.

Breakfastinbedonhols · 24/12/2022 07:50

I bet genderfuck isn’t in the glossary. That can be in the follow-up book for 8+.
I’m so tired of this now. The bios of the authors always tick the same boxes; gamer, artist, animals etc.
I have no idea how any of these new authors are taken seriously. They have nothing to actually say apart from regurgitating the made up rubbish they fill their brains with in online forums like Twitch and Discord.

Please tell me that's early morning humour.

Is it still there? For some reason, books like this that I spot in my local library seem to end up in the very obscure Sections. I don't know how it happens.

Coxspurplepippin · 24/12/2022 07:58

I think I would have been tempted to reshelve the book among the 'practical accounting for apiarists' or 'how to build your own monkey wrench ' section, or to have accidentally dropped it on the floor and kicked it under a shelf. What a pile of steaming dross.

Coxspurplepippin · 24/12/2022 07:58

X post!

Boiledbeetle · 24/12/2022 08:02

Seriously though that pronoun chart headings, subject, object, possessive, reflective.

For kids that in the main are still trying to write their letters properly, some can't read of write yet, some aren't even really aware that boys and girls are different they won't have a sodding clue what a pronoun is or the meanings of the chart headings.

This is something that 100% would be adult driven, which in my mind is akin to abuse.

You've been using JKR's spells from Harry Potter haven't you?

Good on you. If they want to teach their five year old this rubbish they'll have to check out the natural foliage of the outer Hebrides section in order to find it.

senua · 24/12/2022 08:30

Nothing to do with me. I think that the books tend to identify as tomes on 'natural foliage of the outer Hebrides' all by theyselves.

WarriorN · 24/12/2022 08:58

Yes its extreme projection and sexualisation of children.

And sorry, no, I'm deadly boiled beetle serious about that tiktok (seen on Twitter somewhere)

Yep. Like the vegan cat analogy.

RambamThankyouMam · 24/12/2022 09:08

Hmm. I wonder what the pronouns of the person in the hijab are. I can't begin to imagine.

I love when wokeries intersect.

Musomama1 · 24/12/2022 09:32

Blimey, I'd be so tempted to quietly put this in the bin.

ZenNudist · 24/12/2022 09:39

WTF is the last table? It's just a random jumble of letters.
