We can't have Bunburys but we can have a cheer up thread for recipes and nonsense - unrelated to any other that reads and just for ourselves to discuss purple scarves and green skirts and cats. Is anyone preparing for Xmas yet? I'm going to buy a Christmas cake from the bakers and feed it some brandy (no time to bake one).

OP posts:

Just came on to do my Christmas character impersonation..

BAH HUMBUG

Shuffles off wittering about f'ing christmas whinge whinge whinge.

Boiledbeetle · 23/11/2022 13:10

But...

Cats you say, ooh such warm fluffy purry things

Skips off to snuggle a cat

ErrolTheDragon · 23/11/2022 13:15

We don't make a big fuss about Xmas nowadays. I've bought DD the jumper she asked for plus another she didn't, and I think (hope!) she's booked her train ticket home... that's about it so far. I think we've decided to leave the turkeys for people who really like them and have beef instead.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 23/11/2022 14:15

Dd and I aren't bothered about Christmas day but we get each other advent calendars - I usually get her the Harry Potter lego one and it just arrived today.

midgetastic · 23/11/2022 14:27

I hope the trains strikes don't mess things up for you Errol

I think they have messed us up

I am about to start a kumihimo braid in suffragette colours for a wristband.
The origami star is for the kitchen: I cut squares from the Waitrose christmas food brochure, I'm easily amused. I might declare it a piece of conceptual art about women's work over the festive season 😂

Oooh. That's lovely. Is it hard to do? I fuck up origami stars EVERY YEAR.

Mind you, I have made about a dozen Xmas cakes <smug>.

I think the dates are ok for us. DH will fetch her if needbe, she's not yet confident to drive that far alone and hates so-called 'smart motorways'.

AutisticLegoLover · 23/11/2022 14:35

I can't wait to get out my Christmas Suffragette garland that I made with the dc a few years back. It needs retreading onto some ribbon to give it more strength and it could do with a few more strips of felt.
We made mince pies last weekend because Dd asked, otherwise I'd say it's too early.

Presents are almost all bought and I can't wait to wrap them once the tree is up in 3 weeks.

I'm fairly crap at origami [no patience, can't tell left from right...]
This is easy, the tricky part is connecting all the segments into a decent circle, swearing at it helps, as does using fairly thin paper so it folds nicely.

Brilliant @VeronicaBeccabunga , I was going to ask for instructions but you've already posted them!

Waitrose are humbugging me right off - they have discontinued some of my fave items - mini mince pie selection, with several types of mince pie, and the lovely almondy speculaas biscuits!

Waitwhat23 · 23/11/2022 16:27

I made my Christmas cake in August and have been feeding it copious amounts of cherry brandy since then so it is hoaching with booze. It smells bloody good though I would be nervous about it being near open flame!

I used to make a proper Gingerbread House (with boiled sweetie windows) but just haven't had the time the last couple of years so have bought the wee gingerbread house kits from IKEA to make it easier this year.

I've been following the Nigel Slater thread which is lovely and really want to try making the mincemeat.

Fabulous, thank you. I'm very good at swearing.

I have an almost finished kumihimo bracelet I started years ago but I just can't work out how to finish it off! I seem to have run out of thread.

I made some awesome butter beer fudge a few years ago. Must dig out the recipe. Would look great tied up with ribbon. 💜🤍💚

@Waitwhat23 I'm happy to volunteer myself as chief fire marshall. Obviously the only way for me to be 100% sure it didn't burn the house down would be for me to eat it all though.

But that's a service I'm prepared to offer for free. Obviously as I'll be travelling and working on Christmas Day if you could throw in lunch as well for my troubles that would be great.

I'll expect the private message with your full postal address by return.

ooh the thought of that cake...mmmmmmmmmmm.

You'd have to fight my husband - he's already grumbling about having to share with my Dad!

(I don't even like Christmas cake! Dried fruit is the work of the devil)

NitroNine · 24/11/2022 11:30

Am currently pinned to my bed by my cats. One on my front so if he straightens his head we’re nose-to-nose; and his brother on my legs. I’ve a blanket over both my duvets (the kind that you popper together) and top sheet - just glad I took off my fleecy hoodie thing in the night or I’d be overheated rather than toasty (especially as the hot press is beside my bed).

This Christmas I will be the age my mother was for her last Christmas (& next year I become the age she was when she died, very suddenly) which is a bit brain-bending. (Sorry, I just needed somewhere to say it 😶)

Probably old news, but there is a Butterbeer Bar in London - attached to a wee museum/exhibition, but you’re now able to just visit the bar itself. Which has started doing cream teas. Because of course it has. (For some reason their butterbeer has ginger in. I mean, probably not to deny me joy &/or in an attempt to poison & murder me; but I’m not ruling it out. And might tell on them to the police for said non-crime hate incidenting. You know, as one does 😉)

beastlyslumber · 24/11/2022 11:39

Urgh Christmas. I might make some parmesan garlic butter roast potatoes.

IcakethereforeIam · 24/11/2022 12:21

@NitroNine let's make this perfectly clear....are you identifying as aginger?

Really envying you the cats.

NitroNine · 24/11/2022 13:16

@IcakethereforeIam

I just properly gigglesnurked at that & I am absolutely am from now on 😁

My cats firmly believe snuggling is a feline right, I’m very lucky like that. They can be very bold wee things, but mostly they’re wee dotes who see it as their job to mind me 😻

IcakethereforeIam · 24/11/2022 13:26

@NitroNine Grin just picturing top cat getting a gigglesnurk wobble.

Beamur · 24/11/2022 16:45

We always pick a colour theme for our Christmas tree (mostly to limit how much tinsel DH can put on it). I'm thinking purple white and green this year.
