Important new initiative for government workers. This is where a huge fight back is going to happen in behind the scenes government, in memos and meetings. If we don't win in the civil service, it doesn't matter how many demos or cases we win, how many twitter threads we write, sooner or later sex differences will be erased. If you work in government/public sector get involved asp.

seen-network.uk/

"We are happy to announce the launch of our new UK cross-government staff network, the Sex Equality and Equity Network.
SEEN is a staff network committed to promoting and supporting sex equality and equity between women and men in our workplaces, and helping all staff to thrive at work and fulfil their potential. The focus of our network is on challenging sex discrimination and upholding rights and protections that relate to sex (including the protections provided to those with the protected characteristics of sex, pregnancy and maternity and sexual orientation, as set out in the Equality Act 2010). We recognise that to achieve this and ensure sex equality and equity sometimes requires treating women and men differently, according to our different rights and needs.

We are also committed to the protected belief (covered by the protected characteristic of religion and belief in the Equality Act 2010) that biological sex is binary and immutable, that biological sex matters for both women and men in our everyday lives, including for our rights and needs in the workplace, and that biological sex must not be conflated with, or replaced by, the concepts of gender or gender identity."

I so wish there was a local government version 😭

Blocked in DEFRA too and I'm too much of a coward to email our IT, but sent the network a message from home email to let them know.

Correction, had to use the government email login, but did it from home laptop - it doesn't accept non-gov email addresses, which is fair I guess

jellydaydream · 10/11/2022 19:31

Well done. I'm joining.

FigRollsAlly · 10/11/2022 19:43

This should make an amazing difference, well done to those who worked hard to make it happen! Just waiting for the usual accusations of ‘hate speech’ etc to arrive.

FemaleAndLearning · 10/11/2022 21:01

I'm arm's length civil servant and it accepted my work email via my phone then I checked I got an email on my work laptop. This is such good news. Thank you to those people behind the scenes. Would be amazing if it was listed on the staff networks!

Tallisker · 10/11/2022 21:26

There was a yammer thread about this in my workplace howling down the new network and expressing disgust that it had been allowed. The vitriol was really frightening.

One person challenged the hyperbole and got some pretty nasty responses.

Maya was mentioned having lost her case for being a transphobe, ignoring the appeal result, and there were lots of comments about how offensive it is to say sex is binary and immutable because the science has been saying for ages this isn't true and it erases the existence of trans people.

I really did feel 'unsafe' if people knew my views. There were nearly 100 comments and only one was gender critical.

FemaleAndLearning · 10/11/2022 21:37

It's going to take a lot of pain to get this out in the open and the myths busted but it has to be done.

ThatWasThat · 10/11/2022 21:48

I was on a call today where it was clear that people are confused about the terms sex and gender. If we get that cleared up, I think will help a lot

HatThatWearsYou · 10/11/2022 21:58

This is really good to hear about, I think it's really important work even though I don't work in CS so just quietly cheering you on from the outside!

bellac11 · 10/11/2022 21:59

I work in a Local Authority I would be interested in this. Lots of my colleagues feel the same but we know that we dont talk about that

What I dont like though is the representation of the 'facts' as belief. Makes science and biology sound like its some sort of religious belief.

FemaleAndLearning · 10/11/2022 22:01

Unfortunately facts can't be in law or something but beliefs can. So done else who understands can better explain but facts can be disputed whereas beliefs can't?

TheBiologyStupid · 10/11/2022 22:22

Absolutely!

jellydaydream · 10/11/2022 22:23

I'm a Probation Officer at HMPPS Ministry of Justice. Will spread the word.

Bumblesaurus · 10/11/2022 22:27

I think I saw the same yammer thread as Tallisker. The absolutely crazed response to SEEN in my organisation has made me even more worried about being found out for my wrongthink.

EHRC were apparently in court in Scotland today apparently claiming there is no difference between sex and gender.

Pinpot · 10/11/2022 22:54

Wonderful news - so brilliant that they've done this and it's been approved.

MsFogi · 10/11/2022 23:05

Bloody brilliant! Now brave women and men need to join it and the more that do the easier it will be for others to put their heads above the parapet.

Iizzyb · 10/11/2022 23:08

I've joined! Thanks for sharing 👍

soddingspiderseason · 10/11/2022 23:15

Have emailed my interest in joining. Am local authority with a .gov address so hopefully will be ok. Really pleased to see this. It's time women were given a voice. So very tired of the nonsense now.

Thethingswedoforlove · 10/11/2022 23:23

I’m public service but not civil service. I am going to see if I can join.

WindyHedges · 11/11/2022 00:42

Brilliant! Congratulations & the very best wishes for the flourishing of the SEEN network (great acronym).

I wish we could set up something in universities that is similar. There's the OU network, but it'd be great to do something more wide-ranging.

I fear this will be my experience. D&I contact is a transperson, which is fine, but I don't feel safe asking them about this or putting this resource up alongside the Stonewall links because I fear attack.

LuciferRising · 11/11/2022 08:30

Terf and Cis have been used in D&I chats before when someone pushed back on something and it wasn't dealt with.

Hotfeetcoldfeet · 11/11/2022 13:04

I saw the SEEN network on Twitter yesterday and felt such a sense of relief and happiness. I signed up immediately of course!!

I’ve been challenging our Diversity and Inclusion paperwork which presents gender ideology as fact rather than a belief, as well as pinning their colours firmly to the mast regarding how GC views are inappropriate at best, and denigrating them as not worthy of respect at worst. To be fair, I’ve had some limited success but I’ve realised how utterly captured the service (within which I work) is as I have been repeatedly blocked by senior managers. I have struggled and struggled to be taken seriously, rather than being seen as a bigoted pest who will not let it lie. After sending them the GC views at work pamphlet (Sex Matters - thank you Maya!!) and pointing out very carefully how they were actively discriminating against me because of my GC views, I got a retraction of the most serious accusations plus an apology. But I still feel they think I’m an awful person for holding my nasty beliefs, and we just need to be kind, inclusionary and celebrate differences etc etc,. It’s been one if the most stressful things I’ve done at work but also one of the most grown up haha!!

One of the issues I’ve felt very keenly is that I am a lone voice (my profession seems to be VERY woke), taking on a behemoth of a service. Hearing about SEEN felt like the cavalry had arrived. I think that given the legitimacy of SEEN, managers will not be able to carry on fobbing off GC concerns.

I am literally so excited to have back up!!!

Same here. The thread has been closed to comments so mods can check responses, but reading it I was really shocked at the hate and language that was used against anyone who might want to join such a network. Also calls for it to be shut down and 'shouldn't be allowed to exist'. I signed up immediately.
