Important new initiative for government workers. This is where a huge fight back is going to happen in behind the scenes government, in memos and meetings. If we don't win in the civil service, it doesn't matter how many demos or cases we win, how many twitter threads we write, sooner or later sex differences will be erased. If you work in government/public sector get involved asp.

seen-network.uk/

"We are happy to announce the launch of our new UK cross-government staff network, the Sex Equality and Equity Network.
SEEN is a staff network committed to promoting and supporting sex equality and equity between women and men in our workplaces, and helping all staff to thrive at work and fulfil their potential. The focus of our network is on challenging sex discrimination and upholding rights and protections that relate to sex (including the protections provided to those with the protected characteristics of sex, pregnancy and maternity and sexual orientation, as set out in the Equality Act 2010). We recognise that to achieve this and ensure sex equality and equity sometimes requires treating women and men differently, according to our different rights and needs.

We are also committed to the protected belief (covered by the protected characteristic of religion and belief in the Equality Act 2010) that biological sex is binary and immutable, that biological sex matters for both women and men in our everyday lives, including for our rights and needs in the workplace, and that biological sex must not be conflated with, or replaced by, the concepts of gender or gender identity."

‘Non-GC’ that should say

DevilIvy · 08/03/2023 10:45

I signed up, but the email address for SEEN is a Gmail account. Is that correct?

MaryThorne · 08/03/2023 23:32

I attended yesterday, the speakers were very courageous, calm and measured and responded to criticism well. I had signed up to SEEN and got an invitation to sign-up to the CSRF event via SEEN.

The responses to critical, and sometimes outright hostile questions towards the end were very calm and measured in my opinion. Great to see so much calm, intelligent GC discussion in chat. I have felt so alone and in fear of speaking out in the civil service believing that sex is real - no longer! It was a very heartening event and exciting to see that so many of us on this thread attended!

greeboclovis · 09/03/2023 18:57

It was a great presentation but disappointing that some individuals felt it was appropriate to try to compare a belief in biological reality to racism & far right views.

Pretty standard response in my view. The script was followed without deviation or hesitation, but loads of repetition Grin

Agree that the script was entirely predictable. Disappointing that they were on there but unsurprising. Good to see what a calm way it was handled by the panel.

Also good to see in real time exactly why a network such as SEEN is required! Thanks, shouty man.

Agreed, it was quite the live case study in the need for SEEN!

See above message - for some reason quote didn’t work!

I'm signed up to SEEN and got an email about them being spotlighted by the Race Forum.
It was via teams, many people were logged in as guest so you didn't need to show your name.

I think the chat proves that SEEN is needed. One person write you can be against gay marriage doesn't mean you should voice it at work comparing that I assume to you can believe sex is binary and immutable but you shouldn't be allowed to voice that at work.

'Intersex' was brought up along with the 1.7% figure this was challenged and evidence given to use the NHS DSD term.
Caster Seymenya was brought up. People were told they were cruel for calling Caster a he. Then saying we shouldn't be discussing an individual even though it was all in public domain.
You don't want us to exist was mentioned.
I missed most of the guy at the end calling SEEN a hate group so waiting for the recording to be shared to rewatch.

DevilIvy · 12/03/2023 12:53

Can someone confirm the email address for SEEN is a Gmail one? Just want to confirm to them I'm happy for them to send me emails.

teawamutu · 12/03/2023 14:39

Official contact page is here: seen-network.uk/contact/

I seem to remember it was Gmail when I contacted them.

Stupid question, is there a particular connection between this petition and SEEN? I keep seeing the link to it posted on this thread (in a way I don't see replicated across all other FWR threads) but the immediacy of relevance is not clear to me.

TalliskerMcSpeculate · 12/03/2023 18:07

notsure SEEN is the cross-government Sex Equality and Equity Network, which campaigns for sex to matter when it matters - most of the civil service is well captured and everything is 'gender'. So yes, it is linked in that the petition and the network have the same aims, in that sex matters, and is the protected characteristic, not gender identity.

EnoughPlayingNice · 12/03/2023 18:24

And the link was posted on a lot of FWR threads.

TalliskerMcSpeculate · 12/03/2023 19:47

Acksherly, out of interest, does anyone know why the in-person IWD cross-gov Manchester thing changed to virtual? Apparently there was a problem with the booking at the venue and I'd be interested to know what the problem was (having just read about Porty library and the Derby IWD thing)

I'm wondering if Maya's compensation award will send any tremors through the capture of the civil service. There has been a lot of noise previously on Yammer about how the result of her employment tribunal didn't mean anything really.

Yeah, right. Only about £100k Grin

FemaleAndLearning · 02/07/2023 11:37

The aggravated injury part should make a big difference.
Anyone in UKRI?

What about all the money her case cost? It is so unfair that that had to be raised by ordinary people who may not have money to spare just to get basic justice for Maya.

It is not that easy to raise it. Won’t the Civil Service just think most people would not try?

BenCoopersSupportWren · 02/07/2023 19:40

It’s not just the payout, it’s the reputational damage and the optics.

“Oh sorry, we can’t pay you the £1500 COL bonus because we still haven’t learned from case precedent and have had to pay out six figure sums for discriminating against and bullying women who think men can’t become women”…not a great look, is it?

Tallisker · 02/07/2023 20:53

Yes indeed, Scrolling. Can't remember what the legal bill was, but Allison's is around three quarters of a million.

And don't get me started on that COL thing, Ben. What a shower of shite. Big announcement of a good thing to happen, then months of wrangling, we're still not paid it, and prices still keep going up and up.

Justforthissnippet · 04/07/2023 05:33

They will take case law into account when preparing advice on probability of winning cases (and would need to be bound to it for value for money purposes) so will make the chances of them taking action against people in the first place lower, plus will hopefully eventually filter down to HR and legal central guidance/direction to departments. In the old days it would have done anyway!
