"There’s more to womanhood than high heels" (I don't even own any at all):

Great article. I'd just had to step away from a post made by a friend on social media about how ciswomen need to be more kind. This article was exactly what I needed to read. Thank you for sharing it.

WalkOff · 29/10/2022 00:23

Janice thank you. Reason why I pay the times sub.

Used to love EI too.

Cock mode - so apt! 😂

Perhaps Iranian protesters defying compulsory hijabs, girls in Afghanistan fighting for an education or mothers experiencing terrible maternity care in British hospitals should all just switch into “boy mode” when reality gets too much. I’m sure the Taliban would understand.
Yes. Absolutely this. Women aren't allowed to identify out of sex-based repression and men never identify out of sex-based power and privilege.

Why why can't people see this??

Hepwo · 29/10/2022 00:53

This bit!

yet another gender conundrum for Sir Keir Starmer to fudge on phone-ins.

Ouch!

tactum · 29/10/2022 00:53

❤Janice

chosenone · 29/10/2022 00:54

This is utterly superb… I want to date to share it on Social Media because it’s so clear!

Arnaquer · 29/10/2022 00:55

Thank you OP for the share token and thank you Janice. Spot on.

Arnaquer · 29/10/2022 00:56

I used to love Eddie, saw him live many times but now I wouldn't go and see home perform if you paid me. Completely disappeared up his own arse hole.

Mollyollydolly · 29/10/2022 01:06

I love Janice Turner.
And Rosie Duffield.

zen1 · 29/10/2022 01:12

Great article, thanks for sharing. I went to see one of Eddie’s shows in the 90s and remember everyone laughing at the crack he made about being a lesbian trapped in a man’s body. Little did anyone think he would actually believe this absurdity.

Ndd135632 · 29/10/2022 07:56

Superb superb. I am peaking my friends and just sent them this. Janice NAILS IT.

JanieAllen · 29/10/2022 08:02

I heart Janice!

Igneococcus · 29/10/2022 08:10

I realized that I have never seen EI doing comedy. I only came to the UK in 2002 and I'm not particularly interested in standup. What kind of topics did he talk about in his shows?

Yes Janice is one of the reasons I pay for the Times.

zanahoria · 29/10/2022 09:08

"What kind of topics did he talk about in his shows?"

A remarkable mix of observational stuff anything from supermarkets to historical events with very imaginative insights. He also has the knack of mixing up these themes to make the whole thing flow, he is a marvelous storyteller.

I saw him live in Shaftesbury Avenue and he was simply the best comedian I have ever seen by some distance.

zanahoria · 29/10/2022 09:11

There some good examples here

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 29/10/2022 09:11

If I don't own high heels do I even have a girl mode?

AllotmentTime · 29/10/2022 09:23

Look up “Death star canteen” on YouTube for a taster.

He was incredibly wide-ranging, his routines were brilliantly well written.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 29/10/2022 09:24

Seen Eddie several times, I always found him hilarious

back in the day when he was bloody brilliant and didn’t have “modes”

verastan · 29/10/2022 09:25

She must defo be a mumsnetter!

*On Thursday night I posted this! If only the women in Iran currently being killed had just taken a leaf out of Eddie's book and worn different shoes so that they were no longer female.

If only the girls in Afghanistan being denied an education could have realised all they had to do was to switch to "boy mode".

So fucking insulting to pretend that womanhood is a costume you can identify in and out of when so many women and girls around the world are oppressed based on their biology and can do no such thing.

It makes me sick.*

On the EI thread.

Then last night Janice writes this in the times. Just saying.......you're welcome Janice Wink

MrsJamin · 29/10/2022 09:26

Surely the local people in Sheffield won't vote for him now if he says he is not interested in local issues?! What an absolute cockwomble.

chocolateisavegetable · 29/10/2022 09:26

@Igneococcus he talked about bees making honey and therefore wondered if spiders make gravy and earwigs make chutney. He had about 100 ideas for phaser settings in Star Trek. He did sketches about Darth Vader in the canteen on the Death Star. Cats drilling for gold, coloured socks stowing away in a white wash etc etc

ClinkeyMonkey · 29/10/2022 09:34

We saw Eddie Izzard in Belfast years ago. I absolutely loved him back then, but I do remember he got heckled a bit to 'try harder Eddie'. To be fair he seemed a bit disconnected from the audience. But he got plenty of cheers and support when he made reference to his leggings, earrings and makeup. I loved that about him. DP thought it was just attention seeking, but I didn't care, even if it was - I was right on board with him wearing whatever the hell he wanted. Nowadays I just think he's a self indulgent plonker.

Great article OP. Thanks for the link and share token!
