Big Tech overreach in the Telegraph:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/09/20/paypal-shuts-accounts-free-speech-union/

"PayPal has shut down the account of the Free Speech Union, an organisation which defends gender-critical academics and opposes Drag queen story hours in schoolss_.
The US payments company shut down the accounts of the Free Speech Union, its founder Toby Young, and his opinion and news website the Daily Sceptic with no clear explanation last week, The Telegraph can reveal.
Mr Young said he suspected the action was driven by political motivess_ and was a “sinister form of cancel culture”.
...

The Free Speech Union, founded by Mr Young two years ago, has recently called on the Government to ensure children aren't politically indoctrinated at school, citing the teaching of “radical gender theory” through Drag queen story hours in schools.
The organisation has helped to defend people who claim they have lost work for expressing opinions, for example Gillian Philip, the author who said her contract was terminated because she stood up for JK Rowling on Twitter amid a row over transgender rightss_. It has also challenged universities that have “no-platformed” gender-critical academics.
...

Mr Young said: “Withdrawing financial services from dissidents and non-conformists and those who dare to defend them is the new frontline in the ongoing war against free speech.
“The Free Speech Union will be lobbying the Government to put new laws in to prevent companies like PayPal demonetising organisations and individuals because their employees disapprove of their views.”"

CortexInferior. One of those times I wish MN had a like button.

Tell the prince that older women rock. If only we lived in an age where elders were respected for their wisdom. I try to imagine what will happen to the more self righteous of this woke generation. Sudden epiphanies, or a slow decline into cynicism?

CortexInferior · 21/09/2022 23:40

My point is this:

We're lovely and nicely gathered here and we do
also have very civilized, knowledgable and informed conversations - that is what and how we do things
on MN. And its human=female potential is going to waste. By default.

All of the girls/ladies - knowledge, education, current information, wisdom, experience, wit, sense of humour.
I am astonished, by the amount of intelligence and knowledge, and expertise here - And NO ONE LISTENS.
NO ONE GIVES A SHIT.

We are nobody. (well, I'm, anyway. No Twitter, no FB, nothing).
So many others "deleted/cancelled" also are.

No one listens, no one cares.
We can talk BETWEEN EACH OTHER TO EACH OTHER till the fucking pigs wearing sequins start singing "Ave Maria". No one really gives a fuck.
(We will so clog up the system with the shit, no
turning back, mate.)

Until that is, we collectively report ourselves for
"transphobic" non-crime HATE incidents of our own
THINKING as a pre-emptive move to advance the social
justice movement - once and for all.
We are the far-righteous ones.
The second, we collectively do that...
WELL, THE FUCKING MELTDOWN IS GOING TO BE...
err, like, SPECTACULAR.

Sorry, just a dream.
Simpleton, me...

Forgive me Constable for I have sinned.

Thank you. So much.
We're both not even British.
Well, not by the UK passport standard.
(He graduated from Nottingham Uni- Politics & International Relations, still so ignorant & dumb like a tonne of nails - me single mother since 1999)
I know.
Since then, however, I did rectify my mistakes
and misjudgement. Indulging him to compensate for the fact I kicked his father out years ago.
No complaints there.
I do feel alone in my own home.
For which I've been paying for donkey's years.
I am a bitchy boss, control clean freak, etc.
Once you've been branded a transphobe,
a fascist (by your own son - on NO basis whatsoever)
you truly are very, very alone.

This is verbatim what I said to him a few days ago
via SMS:
(a pastiche of his ideology)

"I have NO INDEPENDENT critical view of Islam, as one of my friends is a Muslim.
I have also NO INDEPENDENT THOUGHT about GENDER DOGMA, as one of my friends is TRAN. (details to follow).
And that means, I have FUCKING WASTED ALL YEARS
OF ANY FUCKING CRITICAL STUDIES/UNIVERSITY/ and thinking as such to achieve PRECISELY NOTHING IN THE COURSE OF NOT OFFENDING ANYONE I CAN THINK OF POSSIBLY OFFENDING.

And that is the ultimate goal of Social Justice Now.
So realistic, I have no other choice but to stop working
altogether, to commit myself to the cause.
Yours sincerely.
Your son.

(I couldn't have any more children.
Got my retina unglued, etc.
Half blind, in a way.
Fannenshthiehl ceaserian, done.)

CortexInferior · 22/09/2022 01:56

And that is exactly what followed.
I cannot even tell him "piss off" dear.
I'm done with you & paying for your bills.
I am fucking still paying his bills.
He lectures me on how "hateful" and "harmful"
my philosophical approach to gender as a definition
even is. It's violence.
At best, in his mind, it's incitement to violence.
That's where we are.
My own son. No fucking clue.
And all I can say, is I am sorry.
I am truly SORRY.
I HAVE fucking raised AN IDIOT, moron,
fucking misogynist twat with higher education!
As he has TRANS friends - well, the game's over.
They're "hurting & suffering" unbelievable anguish
which in ANY FUCKING CIVIL/CRIMINAL court
in the land is at best "the hearsay" evidence.
Non-admissable, dear.

I'm 52 now. (menstruator? who TF knows)
My granny (born in 1919) spent 3 years of her
life in Buchenwald. She was a seamstress.
That was a concentration camp - got out alive.
My son asked a question:

"So, why didn't she have the tattoo (number) removed?
It's so simple nowadays. She should be fine by now".

CortexInferior · 22/09/2022 04:15

Jesus fucking christ it's so simple:

Every one of us simultaneously reports on ourselves,
what we're really thinking and feeling.
We insist, for fuck sake - every single entry generates a
non-crime "hate report" BECAUSE we care.
We hate the "hate speech" so much, we are compelled
to report it in any shape or form.
That is why WE ARE forced to shop ourselves.
By doing that, we are forcing the other side
to TELL US, what's what.
In detail. With definitions, all the rest.

And there is the beauty - once they forced to
do THAT, we have the voice.
OUR voice.
Nobody is going to shut you up during the court case.
That's how we WIN.

CortexInferior · 22/09/2022 05:37

Where do you think the whole effing
house of cards, is going to unravel?

I the court of law.
One way or the other.

By the time, their DEFINITIONS are there,
I'll be MORE than ready.
And happy to de-construct.
J. Derrida mode.

ScreamingMeMe · 22/09/2022 10:22

They also did this to biologist Colin Wright

AlisonDonut · 22/09/2022 11:43

That article says he has his accounts closed due to COVID free anti vaccine speech. He himself says he has no idea why. So how do the Times know why?

DysonSpheres · 22/09/2022 12:36

He shouldn't have had his account closed down for anti-vaccine speech.

There are many people who are covid vaccine skeptical and I watched in dismay as the narrative turned anyone who didn't jump onboard with it into the enemy. 'antivaxxer' 'covidiots' pretty disgusting. People lapped it up though.

'Disinformation' is whatever the hell big tech platforms and their affiliated big corporations/investors/poltical think tank/backers say and decide it is. That is the huge obvious downside of the so-called Internet 'Safety' Bill. Whose safety will it be protecting?

It's going to get worse. Everyone is ok when the target seems unpalatable.

But they'll come for the apparently sensible next.

ResisterRex · 22/09/2022 13:15

The FSU, or questioning vaccine efficacy, is not proscribed. We do have proscribed groups and the FSU isn't one of them. Questioning vaccine efficacy isn't against the law either.

Danny Kruger MP brought up this case in the House of Commons this morning:

ScreamingMeMe · 22/09/2022 15:14

In this video, it is explained that Patreon, Shoppify and Etsy have banned Conservative and GC people, but are allowing the sale of CSA material, child "sex dolls" and "tucking" underwear for toddlers.

DysonSpheres · 22/09/2022 15:57

I'm afraid to ask what 'tucking underwear' is, I suspect the answer will be grim.

Penny Mordaunt deflected the question really well.

Jack Dee is cancelling his PayPal(!)

twitter.com/therealjackdee/status/1572945552169631744?s=46&t=NiCfdk0_6YHfUBKeBkudGQ

"I’m in the process of cancelling my PayPal account. Big Tech companies that feel they can bully people for questioning mainstream groupthink don’t deserve anyone’s business."

And there's a comment piece on the case from Toby Young in the Telegraph:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/09/22/corporations-allowed-decide-opinions-permissible-free-speech/

"I’m at a loss as to what the Daily Sceptic has ever published that could possibly fall into those categories, but I know from defending feminists at the FSU that ‘hate’ is often used to mean ‘a point of view I disagree with’.
For instance, last year we went in to bat for the women’s rights activist Kellie-Jay Keenn_ after she had a petition removed from Change.org. Her petition, which had several thousand signatures, asked the Oxford English Dictionary not to change the definition of woman from ‘adult human female’ to something else. Change.org removed it on the grounds that defining a woman that way was ‘hate speech’.
The view that sex, like gender, is a social construct and therefore not binary and immutable, is one of five sacred nostrums that you’re no longer allowed to challenge on most mainstream forums, particularly those owned by tech companies in Silicon Valley.
The others are: the lockdown policy and associated Covid restrictions were a prudent response to the pandemic; the mRNA vaccines are safe and efficacious; we’re in the midst of a ‘climate emergency’ and the only solution is to achieve ‘net zero’ by 2050 (preferably earlier); and the West should continue to supply arms and aid to Ukraine.
If you express scepticism about any of these holy precepts, you can expect to find yourself in trouble"

My assumption is that, goaded by US based trans-activists, PayPal made an error. Rather than apologise and correct that error and risk unleashing the Kraken, they have engaged an expensive PR firm to brief the Times. Despite what the Times says it is perfectly OK to question the Government's vaccine strategy. As we know every single expert seemed to have a different view, and if Toby's view is towards the nutty end, so be it. Indeed I seem to remember recently Kate Bingham, the first vaccine procurement head, questioning the current strategy and its reliance on mRNA vaccines.

When I see people who have this board hidden I do wonder at what point this will hit them and they work out what it is we have been banging on about for the last 6 years.

And then they will say that nobody told them it was this bad.

It's this bad. It has been for a fair old while.

Redshoeblueshoe · 22/09/2022 19:28

Matt Letissier has also deleted his paypal account.

2Rebecca · 22/09/2022 22:03

I'm a GP and I find the treatment of the Covid vaccine odd.
All vaccines have side effects, all vaccines kill a small number of people usually by anaphylaxis. The Covid vaccines may cause myocarditis.
Most vaccines including Covid are more beneficial to the population than not vaccinating. If they weren't governments would spend the money on something else and doctors and nurses would refuse to give them.
I think that all governments behaved very weirdly in not discussing the pros and cons of Covid vaccination with the public like adults but pretending it was a miracle vaccine with 100% efficacy and no side effects.
I had all my vaccines but can understand why some young fit people particularly those who'd had Covid chose not to bother.
This is different to nutters who think Bill Gates for some reason spent a fortune microchipping the vaccines but Toby Young is not a conspiracy nut.
Many people in to homeopathy refuse all vaccines. That's their choice, I think they are wrong and homeopathy is pseudoscience but they should not be refused financial services because of their beliefs which are not against the law
Lots of people believe weird things hence the large ( but shrinking) number of religions.
Paypal are very very wrong here.

musicalfrog · 22/09/2022 22:55

Sorry to interrupt. Operational question: will Netflix contact me or do I have to contact them about a change of payment method?

2Rebecca · 22/09/2022 23:06

I would contact them. I had stopped all my regular Paypal payments a few months earlier as I decided it was easier to have them all in 1 place but if changing a payment method the payer should inform the service provider so you don't lose any of the service

musicalfrog · 22/09/2022 23:07

Thanks I'll do that.
