On twitter: "Mermaids is taking us to court to try to strip us of our charitable status. If successful, it means important films like this will not be made."

See twitter for digging.

So a children's charity think that it's their business to police representation for adult gay, lesbian and bisexuals.

Anybody else think this is going to backfire spectacularly?

WarriorN · 29/07/2022 17:32

Clearly running scared. And full on DARVO.

Absolute cheek.

Ironic and amusing timing as Bell slaughters them in every interview he's done!

I wonder if Allison Bailey will be representing LGBA? I don't know what type of work she does and if she specialises in that area.

WarriorN · 29/07/2022 17:40

I'd hope she's actually able to rest and put the toxicity behind her for her health.

I'm sure she'll have the pom poms ready though.

I still don’t understand Mermaids’ case.

greengoose21b · 29/07/2022 18:04

I would really be very interested to understand what Mermaids actual case is here...all I can find is just Twitter nonsense about how LGB Alliance is a hateful bunch of transphobic bigots, which is not a reasonable argument in court.

Surely if they had absolutely no justification, and were truly vexatious, it wouldn't be going anywhere near a court. Mermaids must think they can be successful, as it is surely costing them an arm and a leg (a fin?).

Has anyone seen a reasonably balanced article which explains this case.

Stripeyzebraz · 29/07/2022 18:09

They have such consistently poor judgement.

Circumferences · 29/07/2022 18:14

It's an abusers tactic.

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 29/07/2022 18:22

video made me cry - OP I'm blaming you!

Feels like one of those the process is the punishment things, a charity choosing what and who its advocating for is a perfectly normal standard thing.

Artichokeleaves · 29/07/2022 18:23

They are obsessed.

I'm starting to wonder at what point the LGBA will be able to have them for harassment.

TeenDivided · 29/07/2022 18:27

Would LGBA legal team be able to argue that the case against has no merit and therefore should be thrown out without a full hearing?
It seems so vexatious that one charity should take another charity to court, purely it might seem to make LGBA run out of money before it gets going properly.

MaChienEstUnDick · 29/07/2022 18:27

Hmmm, wonder if the fox killer is pro-bono-ing this? Otherwise it would be a shocking waste of their money - and charities really aren't allowed to spend money willy-nilly.

It also feels like PETA suing a dairy farmers' charity, iyswim. Two charities can be in complete ideological opposition but they have no business trying to shut each other down...

Exactly - their argument is so strange, that an LGB charity must include T or else be deemed hateful and phobic.

What about all the trans specific charities, they don't include other groups, and yet that's fine. But LGB people are not allowed to advocate for themselves?
Complete nonsense.

My (decidedly limited) understanding is that they already argued in a hearing about a hearing about a hearing... type thing, that Mermaids should have to make their case for having standing in the case in a separate hearing. And they lost the hearing about a hearing about a hearing, so now the entire case will have to be fought even though it might be thrown out on the grounds that Mermaids doesn't have standing.

Which means they have to raise a shit ton of money even though it seems blindingly obvious that Mermaids doesn't have standing. It's beyond me what the judge in the hearing about the hearing about the hearing was thinking, possibly Stonewalled?

note: I am not a lawyer 😀

She's a criminal barrister!

I do hope she gets her day in court with Mermaids one day. 😇

applesandpears33 · 29/07/2022 18:42

That's a shame - it would have given the case added interest.

GrabbyGabby · 29/07/2022 18:46

This is such and own goal, i would be v surprised if it ever gets to court. Given the prevailing legal winds, the inevitable Mermaids batshittery that would be exposed and the very non batshit people on the other side, i fully expect this to disappear before it ever reaches a courtroom.

If it does, i will be there with popcorn and beer.

Sounds right, Unicorn.

Interesting thread explaining it here by the lovely Barbara Rich.

Lovelyricepudding · 29/07/2022 18:47

Memails are not actually taking LGBA to court - they are taking the Charity Commission to court (to reverse their decision to give LGBA charity status) and LGBA are intervenors. I wonder if that is why the hearing about a hearing etc allowed it?

From memory, I think Stonewall and Fox Killer were there at the start then thought better of it leaving Mermaids to carry the can.

Did you hear Susie Green on Radio PM programme this afternoon. A very slippery fish..... www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0019kdg

Stonewall sloping off to leave others to carry the can, you say ricepudding?Sounds about right.
