On twitter: "Mermaids is taking us to court to try to strip us of our charitable status. If successful, it means important films like this will not be made."

See twitter for digging.

Not RTFT but… How could Mermaids not liking someone else’s politics possibly be an issue for court action? Wouldn’t a judge just say, this this not justiciable.

This is what I also fail to comprehend. How can they sue the charities commission because they don't like a particular charity? How can they be allowed to misuse their funds in this way?

I hope there will be a public enquiry into Mermaids some time soon.

titchy · 31/07/2022 11:12

You must have forgotten that stonewall was once only for LGB people and then added the T we have no Insurance that the LGB Alliance will not do the same thing,

Wow really? Do you know anything about why LGBA was founded?

As an aside, I assume you don't support any charities at all because they could in the future add another group to those they support?

altGC · 31/07/2022 12:16

Of course I know why the LGB Alliance was made, But do you really believe that the patriarchy is so stupid that they could not make trojan horse charity designed to be supported by the patriarchys enemies.

We are fighting the patriarchy no plan is too complex for them no goal is unachievable we are trying to secure our very existence no crime could be judged is to heinous if it Secured that And no virtue could be forgiven if it hindered that.

As an aside, I assume you don't support any charities at all because they could in the future add another group to those they support?

Of course I support other charities

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 31/07/2022 12:25

I don't see how you can risk it, @altGC.

The Woodland Trust says it is all about planting trees and preserving woodland, but they could be lying and actually plan to chop down all trees eventually.

The RNLI claim to be saving lives at sea, but what if that's all a pretence and they're really sinking boats?

The RNIB might be a front organisation and secretly training birds to turn on all humans when the Zombie Apocalypse gets under way.

.... Or we could look at people's bona fides and their record and believe they are what they say they are.

titchy · 31/07/2022 12:31

So Allison Bailey is a secret TRA?Ooookaaaayyyyy.....

<steps slowly away from @altGC>

CompleteGinasaur · 31/07/2022 12:32

Yes, Gasp0deTheWonderDog, It's obviously time to support Mermaids because every charity/campaigning organisation is just waiting to turn on their loyal supporters and start working towards the exact opposite of the aims they were founded to bring about. I don't know why I couldn't see it before. I'm just off to join the English Defence League as they are clearly about to come out for Black Lives Matter...

FannyCann · 31/07/2022 12:51

I k ie there have been various legal explanations on the thread but I still can't understand this either.

I've done a little gardening but I'm furious. I don't begrudge a penny that I donated to support Maya or Allison, they needed to fight their corner. But over £105K to a newly emerging charity could be used in so many ways for their ongoing work and long term goals. Instead it has to be used to fight off this malicious, vindictive case.
And of course it means everyone has a little less to give to other gardens that need tending. Angry

FannyCann · 31/07/2022 12:51

*I know

CompleteGinasaur · 31/07/2022 12:59

I think it's important to bear in mind that, as necessary as the LGB Alliance has become in light of Stonewall betraying/monetising its foundational ethics, it's not just defending the charity that's important. Losing this case will deal the same kind of reputational damage to Mermaids that Allison Bailey's case has just dealt to Stonewall, and speaking for myself I consider that £25 well spent..

SallyLockheart · 31/07/2022 13:04

I've donated too. It's a charity version of no debate - straight out and out bullying. We shouldn't have to fundraise to oppose these vexatious court cases but if we don't, free speech will be the poorer because of it.

IsItShining · 31/07/2022 14:27

The RNIB might be a front organisation and secretly training birds to turn on all humans when the Zombie Apocalypse gets under way.

To be fair, last week’s experience of camping in a field full of crack teams of ninja chaffinches and stealth ducks does back that up.

FannyCann · 31/07/2022 16:40

Absolutely agree @SallyLockheart I am more than happy to donate to the cause but it really is outrageous that a charity can attack another charity in this way, and create a need to fund a court case in this way when people might prefer to donate to fund charitable activities.

I still don't get it. Why can't we all crowdfund to take Mermaids to court to have their charitable status withdrawn?

How many court cases and other vindictive activities has Mermaids been involved in? As far as I can recall, ones that I know about, reporting Posie Parker to police x 2, supporting Helen Islan in her case against Miranda Yardley (thrown out).
I can't remember the legal term for it but didn't they try to play a part in one or two cases like the appeal against the Keira Bell case?
Any others that people can remember?

Just spotted in a new Spectator article that the Department for International Trade has held meetings with Mermaids on policy

(www.spectator.co.uk/article/after-tavistock-will-mermaids-be-next- sorry they don't do share tokens but archiving sites may be your friend)

"Mermaids is also involved in lobbying and has provided training in public sector bodies. In May this year, the TaxPayers' Alliance revealed that Mermaids had received £20,483 in taxpayer funding between 2018 and 2021. And now, Freedom of Information requests have confirmed that officials at the Cabinet Office held three meetings with the charity between 2019 and 2022: in October 2020, in February 2021 and January 2022.
The latter two meetings were confirmed by the Cabinet Office as pertaining to the issue of whether to ban conversion therapy but the minutes of these meetings were withheld. However, the minutes of the October 2020 meeting were released, which confirmed the charity acknowledged that 50 per cent of its resources are used for 'advocacy', that Mermaids had started work on trans inclusion in sport and that there had been a large increase in people engagement. Separately, the Department for International Trade also confirmed that it held information on meetings between ministers and Mermaids; however it blocked it on the grounds of Section 35 which relates to the 'formulation or development of government policy.'"

WTF does a charity working for 'trans kids' have to do with international trade policy? Are we training them up to process paperwork at Dover?

WarriorN · 02/08/2022 13:19

Trade of medicines? Gawd knows.

It's clear they're continuing to branch out to include adult training as they know directly working with children will soon be lessened greatly. They follow WPATH affirmation policy which will soon be made clear isn't NICE guidance. Therefore they'll be at odds with U.K. treatment routes.

Just shows why so much has happened under this government's watch when they pander to and fund groups like this. I noticed that they were outside the Rugby meeting lobbying delegates to persuade them to allow men to trash women's rugby. Looking at the result they nearly succeeded.

I wonder what they'll go for next?

Maybe Mermaids are providing expertise on how to believe two contradictory things at once, which DIT can then make use of for the Northern Ireland protocol and the border that is/isn't down the Irish Sea?

OT, may I ask a quick question please? I heard Mr Menno mention that a group of clinicians from the GIDS had written to the Guardian several years ago but the Guardian refused to publish their letter. May I have further details on this please?

JanieAllen · 02/08/2022 19:54

sounds like something twitter would answer but Sue Evans first brought up concerns in 2005
