Things are becoming weirder and weirder.

The venue said “we believe in diverse voices” but evidently they really don’t.

Apparently people are cross (to the point of attacking him) because he said trans people are confusing.

Difficult to argue that you believe in diverse voices when cancelling a Black performer for saying things you don't want to hear. At least successfully. I mean, you can say it, but nobody's going to believe you.

WolverineBluey · 21/07/2022 14:44

I've no time for these "last minute" cancellations. They would have known what they were getting with him - just say no to the booking in the first place if that's where you stand. This spineless, virtue signalling climb down just makes everyone look fools.

The 'last minute' cancellation is to prevent him seeking an alternative venue, therefore silencing his voice.

the more ‘inclusive’ we become, the more excluded I feel

'gender is a fact'

nearly there Dave, nearly there

WolverineBluey · 21/07/2022 15:01

A good point, Worry. Imagine it comes at a cost to the venue to pull such a stunt. Quite a statement, one way or the other.

AlisonDonut · 21/07/2022 15:07

I do think it is a tad racist to suggest that the venue is unsafe if a black man gets on stage and says his choice of words.

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/07/2022 15:38

Honestly people are so thick. Why do they honestly think that hosting a person means that you agree witg everything and anything they have ever said or done.

There are commedia I don't like who i find distasteful. So I dont watch them. It's that easy.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 21/07/2022 16:01

How big, concerted was the threat they were responding too. That sounds like the response of someone who is terrified they will lose everything!

That's some lazy, everyday racism right there.

Classic FWR.

EsmaCannonball · 21/07/2022 16:08

Chappelle could sell out arenas but he actually prefers playing smaller gigs in smaller places. This venue has just self-harmed to pay obeisance to an ideology. I wonder if they vet music acts for misogynistic lyrics?

The only way Chappelle's appearance could make the venue unsafe is if some nutjob TRA tries to murder him again.

BellaAmorosa · 21/07/2022 16:16

The Varsity Theatre has taken the show. Tickets sold out so quickly they added two more shows!

So I guess First Avenue did Chapelle a favour.

It's not me saying that the venue is unsafe when a black man performs. That's the venue itself.

Why do you keep mentioning his skin colour and safety?

It's a racist dogwhistle.

She was paraphrasing the bloody venue!

Huh? The venue... cites safe spaces, freedom of a diversity of voices. He's a male and he is a person of colour, a black man.

The racism is theirs. As is the bloody hysteria, fear, grovelling!

Have you got a link to their statement, I haven't seen it to be fair.

Oh but they do a good grovel... fully quoted in the article/link in the OP!

Yes that confused me for a moment.

People are so convinced that “sex” is a rude word.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 21/07/2022 16:39

There's nothing in that BBC article that links his skin colour and "safety".

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 21/07/2022 17:12

Oh. I see. Is this the one time we should not see skin colour?

They say his show made their space unsafe.

They also mention diversity.

The obvious comment is that a black man should never need to defend himself against cries of lack of diversity, what we it is he is saying out loud.

Or is acknowledging that a bad thing these days? Are we back to the colour blindness of my early childhood - which I am forever told was in and of itself a bad thing.

The point being made stands. Diversity has only one meaning in some places: Trans acceptance with no question.

AlisonDonut · 21/07/2022 17:19

If is isn't his skin colour how else is he 'diverse'?

Statement here:

'The First Avenue team and you have worked hard to make our venues the safest spaces in the country, and we will continue with that mission. We believe in diverse voices and the freedom of artistic expression, but in honouring that, we lost sight of the impact this would have.

TheGreatATuin · 21/07/2022 18:02

In a sign of what a mess this is, I think its far more of a racist dogwhistle to use 'racist dogwhistle' to try shut down someone who is actually calling out racism.
This is the equivalent of a woman complaining about sexist behaviour and then being told her complaint is a sexist dogwhistle because she drew attention to the issue.
What utter, utter nonsense.

ControversialOpening · 21/07/2022 18:30

Dear Clovefeld,
