Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Penny Mordant's bid for leadership is surely over

Her obfuscation over her views on the trans issue in a long and rather disingenuous twitter thread earlier has brought a "senior Whitehall official," incensed by the perceived duplicity, out to say this:

"A senior Whitehall official gets in touch about Mordaunt and the maternity bill. “She fought AGAINST the change to ‘women’. The way she’s trying to rewrite history to suit her is despicable. While she’s supposedly campaigning on character and values. can’t believe the hypocrisy”

twitter.com/ShippersUnbound/status/1546158477738971138

We all could see when it was happening it was only the steadfastness of the Lords that got the words woman and mother back in to the legislation.

On top of the that she used footage of the late Jo Cox rather cynically earlier too in a bout of self-promotion.

She has no judgement at all and her relationship with the truth seems rather strained. As the first comment in the thread says this is surely her Andrea Leadsom moment.

Penny Mordaunt should step-down before she does any more damage.

More:

"The bill came about because Suella Braverman was going on maternity leave. She was also fiercely opposed to Mordaunt’s position. A source says: “No one louder than Suella. It was apparently unbelievable the fight Penny made over Suella’s genderless body!”"

Mordaunt really is dreadful trying to twist her views on this. I' d have more respect for her if she stuck to her originally line. But not only do I now disagree with her I think she is without any integrity on this subject - and if on this then what else?

I can at least respect people who stand their ground. This is abject.

Floisme · 10/07/2022 17:19

Regardless of what happens to Mordaunt's leadership bid, I think it's fabulous that it appears to be floundering because of this issue. Whatever happened to 'No debate' eh?

Well done to vipers everywhere and of all political colours. Now watch and learn, Labour Party because you'll be next.

TimBoothseyes · 10/07/2022 17:20

Given that her campaign video uses images of Jo Cox and Oscar Pistorius, whilst talking about "values and decency" I'm guessing she will not get many votes anyway.

FOJN · 10/07/2022 17:20

Someone on that thread claims to have checked Hansard's and confirms that the statement made by the civil servant is correct. PM's Twitter thread stated she had fought for the language to be changed to woman. It's a rather stupid lie to tell when it can so easily be revealed.

Either way I won't be sad if this ends her leadership campaign.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 10/07/2022 17:22

I don't think so. I think they are all getting this out of the way early. I wouldn't be surprised it its not talked about after Wednesday.

Lots of men are saying its a non issue, so will want to change the subject as quickly as possible.

ChristinaXYZ · 10/07/2022 17:22

I will be over the moon if this finishes her campaign. I am utterly disgusted with her fakeness.

Men would say it was a non-issue, wouldn’t they? “Ladies! Stop being so divisive and just agree to what we say!”

Quia · 10/07/2022 17:25

On top of the that she used footage of the late Jo Cox rather cynically earlier too in a bout of self-promotion.

Not only her. It appears she wasn't too scrupulous about checking with a number of the people in that video whether they agreed, including the unfortunately police officer for whom it would have been a disciplinary offence if he had.

But she deserves to be chucked out of the contest just for that utterly ludicrous video anyway. I don't understand how the bloke who did the voice-over managed to restrain himself from breaking into uncontrollable laughter.

Quia · 10/07/2022 17:25

unfortunate, not unfortunately

mrshoho · 10/07/2022 17:31

bye-bye miss penelope . Reap what you sow.

Totally agree.

This issue is now on the table and important, because of the relentless drive of women who just wouldn't be quiet.

achillestoes · 10/07/2022 19:22

I’ve just seen the first post on Twitter calling Mordaunt a t*rf.

You can’t placate them.

Manteiga · 10/07/2022 19:41

The Express has got hold of the story about the maternity leave bill now: www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1638383/Suella-Braverman-trans-debate-Penny-Mordaunt-cabinet-office-maternity-law

ChristinaXYZ · 10/07/2022 19:41

"And now [Suella] Braverman herself has entered the debate, releasing a lengthy statement setting out her own account of the 2021 row over the Ministerial and other Maternity Allowances Act. While she declines to name Mordaunt, she says that 'to have my female body referred to as being that of a "pregnant person" was distressing and unncessary' adding that it was 'the Cabinet Office who were for responsible for the bill.' At the time of course Mordaunt was indeed serving in that department as Paymaster General.

Braverman then goes in studs-up on the ministry, declaring that owing to its 'intransigence... what should have been a sign of progress became a bitterly contested bill' adding the legislation was 'hijacked for trans activists' and labelling it 'an indulgence of extremism.' She says only the support of members of the House of Lords meant the term referred to a 'woman'. Braverman ends with a veiled barb: 'It is my hope that just as we should call pregnant women what they are, we will all of us accurately recall what we did and said in office.'
Ouch."

I’ve just seen the first post on Twitter calling Mordaunt a trf.*

Brilliant 🤣

I hope other "trans allies" are watching and learning.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 10/07/2022 19:59

an indulgence of extremism - that's a nice little phrase and oh so true. Very pleased to see Mourdaunt being called out for her hypocrisy.

mrshoho · 10/07/2022 20:04

'It is my hope that just as we should call pregnant women what they are, we will all of us accurately recall what we did and said in office.'

😁 and if they are silly enough to attempt to rewrite they'll be pounced on.

achillestoes · 10/07/2022 20:08

Braverman taking no prisoners.

GreenLunchBox · 10/07/2022 20:11

She also featured Oscar Pretorius (who murdered his girlfriend) and Jo Cox (a murdered female MP) in her campaign video. Really showing her feminist credentials there!

Wow, I can’t believe that her brother was engaged to professional misogynist David Paisley, as noted in that Twitter thread. That explains a LOT. I assume said brother and the delightful Mr Paisley have now parted ways hence Penny’s climb down.

Sorry Penny, too late. We’ve seen you. Hope all the virtue cookies you got from David and your friends at Pink News were worth it. Your taking the side of the men’s rights activists will likely cost you the chance to be Prime Minister. Absolutely no less than you deserve after throwing women under the bus then hoping we would all be too stupid to remember.

i hope it serves as a lesson to every handmaiden out there trying to advance her career by siding with men.

FitAt50 · 10/07/2022 20:53

I think she will do very well and will probably be in the final 2.
