Penny Mordant's bid for leadership is surely over

Her obfuscation over her views on the trans issue in a long and rather disingenuous twitter thread earlier has brought a "senior Whitehall official," incensed by the perceived duplicity, out to say this:

"A senior Whitehall official gets in touch about Mordaunt and the maternity bill. “She fought AGAINST the change to ‘women’. The way she’s trying to rewrite history to suit her is despicable. While she’s supposedly campaigning on character and values. can’t believe the hypocrisy”

We all could see when it was happening it was only the steadfastness of the Lords that got the words woman and mother back in to the legislation.

On top of the that she used footage of the late Jo Cox rather cynically earlier too in a bout of self-promotion.

She has no judgement at all and her relationship with the truth seems rather strained. As the first comment in the thread says this is surely her Andrea Leadsom moment.

Penny Mordaunt should step-down before she does any more damage.

How can anyone claim that a 44year old man who sends dick pictures to and arranged to meet a 14 year old girl for sex is of "good character " I will never understand 🤬

Lovelyricepudding · 13/09/2022 07:37

Funny how this seems to keep happening to TRAs or people close to them.

I think it’s legalese for ‘no prior convictions’.

But yes, it grates. A lot.

I did wonder why she did not get more votes in the election, I guess quite a few MPs knew about her family circumstances and voted elsewhere

This is an intriuguing bit from the Mail article where Edward Mordaunt apparently tries to drag his sister Penny Mordaunt into it, in a really pathetic way:

Recorder of Leeds Judge Guy Kearl QC said he dismissed the suggestion that as a result of the job performed by Mordaunt's sister, Conservative MP Penny Mordaunt, his case had been different.

He said: 'I take into account that suggestion that as a result of the job performed by your sibling which is an MP your case is somewhat different to other offenders'. I sit here in this court daily and view many of these cases and as far as I can see your case has not been dealt with in any way inappropriate or different to other cases.'

And then from the Sun:

He also addressed claims that Mordaunt had been dealt with “unusually” swiftly by the Crown Prosecution Service after his initial arrest before suggesting he had deliberately been “less than frank” with the police.

So he seems to be saying he's been dealt with more swiftly than others because of who his sister is?

I do wonder if this case would have flown completely under the radar if Edward Mordaunt hadn't been quite so vocal about his family connection and what he thinks that meant.

PaterPower · 13/09/2022 13:50

“Unusually swiftly” would be to his advantage though? (although I’m sure his barrister was pretending otherwise). It can often be years, living with the charge unresolved.

I know of one case, which had been due in court this month (already after a year), which has now been rescheduled for 2024! That involves actual assault of a minor (not “just” trying to meet one). The poor victim. And no doubt the alleged perp’s solicitor will try and exploit the lengthy delay.

“Justice delayed is Justice denied” to both accused and victim(s).

I agree with you, @PaterPower - it's a rather odd complaint. I hope he's not suggesting that his sister being who she is meant that he somehow received unfair treatment? I mean, he did the crime.
