Penny Mordant's bid for leadership is surely over

Her obfuscation over her views on the trans issue in a long and rather disingenuous twitter thread earlier has brought a "senior Whitehall official," incensed by the perceived duplicity, out to say this:

"A senior Whitehall official gets in touch about Mordaunt and the maternity bill. “She fought AGAINST the change to ‘women’. The way she’s trying to rewrite history to suit her is despicable. While she’s supposedly campaigning on character and values. can’t believe the hypocrisy”

We all could see when it was happening it was only the steadfastness of the Lords that got the words woman and mother back in to the legislation.

On top of the that she used footage of the late Jo Cox rather cynically earlier too in a bout of self-promotion.

She has no judgement at all and her relationship with the truth seems rather strained. As the first comment in the thread says this is surely her Andrea Leadsom moment.

Penny Mordaunt should step-down before she does any more damage.

@FitAt50

She’ll do well. She’s more compelling than Shapps (but who isn’t?), less weepy than Tugendhat, more charismatic than Javid, more experienced than Sunak, more well-known (and saner) than Braverman, less hated than Patel.

But this will still sink her. It will just take a bit longer.

"Multiple sources tell me Liz Truss, Nadine Dorries and Chloe Smith all fought to get the word "mother" reinserted into the bill against fierce resistance from Mordaunt, who advocated "pregnant person". As one Tory put it, "She thinks some women have penises""

If the Tories vote another liar into No 10 they will deserve to lose heavily in the next GE. Hopefully most of them will cotton onto that sooner rather than later.

There's a daft article by Allison Pearson in the Telegraph about Mordaunt and both Mordaunt and Pearson are being vilified in the comments. It is a delight to see. I assume will be read by most MPs too.

Lord Hunt does not seem impressed by Penny Mordaunt’s claim:

“I rather think it was me,
@LordLucasCD
and other colleagues in the @UKHouseofLords who got the Bill amended”

It show naivety on her part to think she could get away with an outright untruth when we all followed it at the time. It was well documented. And it was only a few months ago. Our memories are longer than goldfish.

Olderbadger1 · 11/07/2022 00:22

Love Lord Hunts' quiet background mutter (through a twitter loudhailer). "I rather think it was me". Perfect.

achillestoes · 11/07/2022 06:52

Going to have to be a little bit fair to PM: she did defend Kathleen Stock and condemn the balaclava-clad nutters on Sussex campus. She was unequivocal about it, so she deserves credit for that.

FitAt50 · 10/07/2022 20:53

I think she will do very well and will probably be in the final 2.

You might be right. Dishonesty certainly didn’t prevent Boris from doing well (for a time at least).

334bu · 11/07/2022 08:23

I am sure Ms Mordaunt is only following her former leader's example of stating " alternative facts"

ContradickstoryEvidence · 11/07/2022 09:49

I'd really like to know what happened to the report PM commissioned 3 years ago into ROGD. It's one of the things she bragged about in her tweet, but was it ever completed/is it still ongoing and if so, what is its progress?

WestHamPam · 11/07/2022 09:56

GreenLunchBox · 10/07/2022 20:11

She also featured Oscar Pretorius (who murdered his girlfriend) and Jo Cox (a murdered female MP) in her campaign video. Really showing her feminist credentials there!

Wow, it’s like a spoof ad. Also shouldn’t it be “less about the captain, more about the ship”? Her version doesn’t really work.

Is it not the Cass Review? Or was that commissioned by someone else?

Motorina · 11/07/2022 16:18

Ohhh that's hysterically bad.

Crazykatie · 11/07/2022 16:23

The gender debate aside Mordaunt has been shuffled into several ministerial posts only to be shuffled out quickly, I’m thinking she is a lightweight with ambitions, not suitable for PM.

achillestoes · 11/07/2022 19:17

She’s doing well in terms of nominations. Only Sunak is doing better. Waiting this evening to find out what the rules are.

I’m not familiar enough with the Tory membership to know who they would choose between Sunak/Mordaunt, but it’s very concerning for women.

achillestoes · 11/07/2022 19:23

So it looks like Tory members favour Mordaunt and Badenoch. Tory MPs currently leaning towards Mordaunt and Sunak. So not a great scenario if you’re GC: Mordaunt faces off against Sunak and wins the leadership.

GC views get sidelined again.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 11/07/2022 19:23

Mordaunt is topping poll of conservative members

achillestoes · 10/07/2022 19:22

I’ve just seen the first post on Twitter calling Mordaunt a t*rf.

You can’t placate them.

This is a TRA dog and pony show. Look for more statements like this to instill in people's minds the lie that she is no friend to trans people. Nothing but pure manipulation to obfuscate the fact the she is a stalwart supporter of gender woo.

achillestoes · 12/07/2022 07:25

@LordLoveADuck

Yes, we know she is full ‘TWAW’. She is speaking to people behind the scenes to guarantee self-ID, I’m sure.

LordLoveADuck · 12/07/2022 08:11

We may know she is full twaw but does the Tory rank and file know it?

TheBikiniExpert · 12/07/2022 08:14

She should lose for that car crash of a campaign video on its own!

MalagaNights · 12/07/2022 08:27

Apparently she's the front runner with the conservative party members!!

If she's in the final 2 she may win.
That is risky for women.

We need to clarity on her policy position on Trans and women's rights.

vera99 · 12/07/2022 08:30

Apparently, the average age of the Tory membership is 72 - they remember that nice Danny La Rue with great affection and Penny looks very smart in her uniform gender culture wars don't really work with that generation. Twitter is what the birds do in the garden.

Agree, but I think some of the less switched on ones are genuinely offended by some of her statements.

Abhannmor · 12/07/2022 08:37

I'm afraid she would win a run off with Sunak. Maybe not in the Commons but among members. She is white and has no tax dodging spouse afaik.

She is emotionally committed to twaw because her twin brother is a believer. He was engaged to that actor guy who spend all his time harrassing and suing GC feminists. What a mess.
