So sounds like BoJo is finally about to be dragged out and I'm wondering who would be best to replace him in terms of being sympathetic to a GC's point of view?

I was thinking Savid Javid potentially? Any thoughts from anyone else?

Oh his is he

on the plus side they loaded so much on the personality of Johnson and partygate he goes that goes with it

It’s all they had

achillestoes · 07/07/2022 11:41

He makes me want to drill a hole in my head just to drown out his voice.

MarshaBradyo · 07/07/2022 11:43

His voice does that to me too

unbearable

but I find them all like that I just can’t listen - Reeves, Rayner, Starmer sure there are others

FigRollsAlly · 07/07/2022 11:46

Starmer has a strangulated quality to his voice which makes it sound a bit peevish.

achillestoes · 07/07/2022 11:46

I don’t mind listening to Rayner. Reeves is unbearable.

MarshaBradyo · 07/07/2022 11:49

I actually swing to feeling sorry for him as he can’t help his voice but then I still can’t listen without effort

FigRollsAlly · 07/07/2022 11:49

People talking about snap elections are thinking that new PMs who haven’t been voted for as leader in a general election can be under pressure to prove their authority by gaining a mandate from the electorate.

achillestoes · 07/07/2022 11:50

There’ll be an election by the end of the year, probably.

LarryBlackmonsCodpiece · 07/07/2022 11:52

@MarshaBradyo & @achillestoes keep hearing via media, others discussing it, lucky for you if you know that’s not the case, others not so up on politics as you two obviously.

Quite a few ex forces experience, across right, left and centre.

Also, Mordant being a former Magician's assistant made me smile: tricks and false claims of an illusionist.

minipie · 07/07/2022 11:53

It won’t be a snap election. If a new Tory leader called a snap election in the next few months they’d be shot down in flames purely by association. They need at least a year to prove how different they are from Boris, and hope people move on from their current anger.

Hopefully in that year things will have moved on enough re extreme trans ideology that even Labour might think twice about self ID. Recent developments have been encouraging.

I really don’t know what you mean? Is this about the snap election I’ve lost track

I’m not criticising your point just asking why you feel as you do?

I even said perhaps I missed something

achillestoes · 07/07/2022 09:52

I don’t find Truss embarrassing. Most of that is misogyny.

Yes, there's a general press line that Truss is embarrassing but I've yet to see any actual evidence that she's bad at her job. She's not the best public speaker, but I'd rather have someone who was competent and not all about appearances - especially after BoJo.

Is there any actual evidence about Truss being incompetent or is it all blatant misogyny?

I suspect World Leaders would prefer quiet competence to a repeat of BoJo.

BootsAndRoots · 07/07/2022 11:56

I would imagine that the televised debates will ask each candidate "what is a woman".

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 07/07/2022 11:58

I think, with a new leader, the Tories would be mad to pull an election out of the bag now. They need to re-establish themselves as a stable, sensible government who are the right choice to get us through the (probable) upcoming economic difficulty. A year or so of having put the many and varied Johnson scandals behind them they'd be in a better position than now, I think. Right now the danger is people are thoroughly sick of the lot of them and will vote for anything else because they want the change.

Beowulfa · 07/07/2022 11:59

Interesting how it's the Tories who had the UK's first female PM, and could potentially have our first non-white one. I'd like to see Javid bring some stability to this shit show. Being dull but competent is seriously underrated in politics.

Also interesting how Starmer's boring voice is such a negative. William Hague could arguably have been PM if he had hair and a less annoying voice.

achillestoes · 07/07/2022 11:59

@blahblahblahspoons

It’s just misogyny. She doesn’t say anything much more stupid than the rest of them.

blahblahblahspoons · 07/07/2022 12:00

It’s such a shame, as I admire Keir Starmer, and I think many of the Labour politicians are decent people who genuinely want to serve their people and the country.

I don't understand this though. How can they be decent people when they deny women's rights, when they deny the rights of young girls to be able to go into changing rooms without seeing a penis, if a man decides he wants to self ID as a woman and go in and get undressed?

I just don't think it's decent to force half the population to be described as body parts and to force people to lie about the truth.

MarshaBradyo · 07/07/2022 12:00

achillestoes · 07/07/2022 11:50

There’ll be an election by the end of the year, probably.

Won’t they stay in as long as possible using majority and getting away from all this?

ie election when it’s meant to be

I agree time is a friend in this

abc5432 · 07/07/2022 12:00

Truss 'women do have vaginas Nick' would be my preference.

achillestoes · 07/07/2022 12:02

@MarshaBradyo

Trouble with that is that going on too long without an election weakens the unelected new PM. It has to be before too long.

abc5432 · 07/07/2022 12:02

Tories would be idiots to call an Election as one is not due till December 2024. That's 2 plus years to bed in a new leader.

blahblahblahspoons · 07/07/2022 12:02

Being dull but competent is seriously underrated in politics.

Absolutely. Javid's been good in health. I totally disagreed with his covid policy at first too and thought I knew better (!), but he obviously had better data than me and although I'd like some investment in ventilation and air filtration (esp in schools) I think he's largely got things right.

I've been quite impressed with him.

blahblahblahspoons · 07/07/2022 12:04

But they've all been elected as MPs and no-one gets to vote directly for leader.

I don't get this whole we need an election when we've got a new PM. We don't vote for them! That's not the system we have. Fine, if we think we need a different system but under the existing system I really don't see why an election is needed.
