Glitterball

Fucking fantastic.

VestofAbsurdity · 13/02/2022 12:09

The hits just keep on coming!

Well done House of Lords.

DisgustedofManchester · 13/02/2022 12:10

Hmm the house of lords ( and ladies maybe? )

Average age 71
Ethinic minorities 2%
Men 66%
Largest Group Conservative

colour me unsurprised

BreadInCaptivity · 13/02/2022 12:14

Excellent news.

No government institution should be in the thrall of a lobby group (any lobby group) regardless of how flawed and in need of reform that institution is.

ExtraPlinky · 13/02/2022 12:18

Excellent news.
Stonewall should be investigated and dismantled.

334bu · 13/02/2022 12:26

No institution should be giving money to any organisation like Stonewall, which has actively lobbied for the removal from the Equality Act law of protections assigned to women.

Jeyesfluid · 13/02/2022 12:29

Fabulous news. And about bloody time.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 13/02/2022 12:34

How did the hereditary peerage passing to the oldest male no matter how they identify sit with the Stonewall monitoring? All the tinkering with language but nothing about the whole reason a proportion of the Lords actually get their seat.

ScreamingMeMe · 13/02/2022 12:37

Oh fucking YES!

How do you explain the fact that they were in the scheme in the first place then? Grin
ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2022 12:48

Ethinic minorities 2%

6.6% last year. It was 2.6% in 2001 so presumably the 2%statistic is from the last century. So still far too low, but moving in the right direction.

PandorasMailbox · 13/02/2022 12:48

Fabulous news!

WallaceinAnderland · 13/02/2022 12:58

Stonewall really needs to topple and then rebuild with sensible policies. Time to lose the woo and focus on real solutions to real facts.

Igmum · 13/02/2022 12:59

And about. Time. Too. Excellent news, well done HoL. Rapidly becoming the voice of sanity here. I've been against hereditary seats in the Lords pretty much all of my life but happy to acknowledge good stuff when I see it.

Jeyesfluid · 13/02/2022 13:02

How do you explain the fact that they were in the scheme in the first place then?

Grin Don't confuse the poor dear. Logic is not their strength.

Colour me unsurprised at your response, Disgusted. Haven't seen you round these parts for a while, welcome back! Had a nice holiday?

As to your comments - being older often means you've been around the block a few times. Have seen the social fashions wax and wane a few times, picked up on the patterns. You're certainly not the teenager you were, the teenager whose naivety could be taken advantage of, the teenager who couldn't spot trouble coming as sure as eggs is eggs.

Are you saying race makes a difference as to how you regard gender identity ideology? Surely not! That would be racist. And invalidating of the many people of colour who have been critical of the ideology. Tush, tush!

So heartening that the men of the House of Lords get it!

And I think we've all seen that this is not a left-right matter. So few things are these days, are they not? Out with the old divisions - marvellous!

Pip pip!

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 13/02/2022 13:08

Thank you for the link to the article. Very interesting.

@WallaceinAnderland

I'm not sure they can be rebuiltSad. Those at the top changed the direction years ago, and I'm not sure it can be brought back on course. In the end, I think funding will gradually diminish and it will wither on the vine. Unless, of course it finds new funders. Big pharma, maybe?
Jeyesfluid · 13/02/2022 13:12

Had a nice holiday

I suspect it was more of a staycation. A temporary change of how they do things.

Hasselhoffsheadband · 13/02/2022 13:14

How do you explain the fact that they were in the scheme in the first place then?

Exactly what I was going to ask!

AtrociousCircumstance · 13/02/2022 13:17

Amazing news!

WhereYouLeftIt · 13/02/2022 13:21

From that Times article (thanks, Milady!) -

"Stonewall said: “Our Diversity Champions programme provides guidance and support on making HR policies inclusive for LGBTQ+ employees. It has no bearing on the drafting of legislation, which is the responsibility of the relevant government department. To suggest otherwise is to fundamentally misunderstand the legislative process.” "

Are they seriously telling the House of Lords - 'misunderstands' the legislative process?!? Really?

Cut&pasted from www.parliament.uk/about/faqs/house-of-lords-faqs/role/ -

The House of Lords is the second chamber of the UK Parliament. It works with the House of Commons to:

- make laws
- check and challenge the actions of the government, and
- provide a forum of independent expertise

The House of Lords Chamber spends about 60% of its time on legislation; the other 40% is spent on scrutiny – questioning Government and debating issues and policy. Committee work takes place outside the Chamber.

"Fundamentally misunderstand the legislative process", my arse!

DomesticatedZombie · 13/02/2022 13:33

How do you explain the fact that they were in the scheme in the first place then?

Good question.

@PastMyBestBeforeDate

The GRA specifically preserves male primogeniture so a woman who identifies as trans cannot inherit a peerage in place of her younger brother. Stonewall are apparently perfectly happy with this.

I am so looking forward to a response to this, wonder how long it will take.
