Living in a woman's body - The Guardian

Was surprised and heartened to see a piece with this title by Eve Ensler this morning. Now there is a second piece by a woman in Afghanistan, so it is obviously a series. Waiting for the inevitable piece by a male person telling us what is is like to "live in a woman's body".

Why are they doing this?
Don't they realise this is just trolling now?

They can fuck off to be honest.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 09/02/2022 10:39

How does The Guardians head not explode with the cognitive dissonance??

I’ve no doubt we’ll get one of the usual suspects telling us why they’ve surgically altered their perfectly healthy female body to look male (I think the guardian now regard publishing TM stories as a gotcha to GC women) I very much doubt they’ll have a story from a female detransitioner

Forestdweller11 · 09/02/2022 10:46

Linguini I don't think we know for a fact that there will be an article by a transwoman, so it's a bit early to be so attacking.

Certainly the first two pieces are thought provoking and have valid comment on living in a woman's body.

Maybe the title of the series living in a woman's body means just that. Do transwomen live in a womans body? I'm thinking they don't. The body inhabited is male?

Linguini · 09/02/2022 11:11

Yeah sorry my reaction wasn't really about any probable TW article coming along.

I just meant the Guardian are now pretending they know what a woman is, or that they know what a woman's body is at all in the first place. They're trolling plain as day regardless.

StrawberrySquirrelThief · 09/02/2022 11:12

I saw that but also read the bio bit at the bottom:

V (formerly Eve Ensler) is a playwright, activist and the founder of One Billion Rising, a global protest campaign to end rape and sexual violence against women (cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities that are subject to gender-based violence).

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 09/02/2022 11:41

Yeah, they got Eve Ensler years ago.

Proper tragic - that woman did so much for global VAWG.

I just don't get it. Eve Ensler has made a career from knowing what a woman is.

Calist · 09/02/2022 11:58

No doubt tomorrow’s instalment will include a penis or a ‘vagina’ made of intestines plus some crap about hormones making them cry at kittens and develop a love of cupcake decorating.

IcakethereforeIam · 09/02/2022 13:03

The Vagina Monologues got cancelled all over campuses a few years ago for not being inclusive. I think she was going to add a new chapter from the pov of a TW, don't know what came of that.

Monitaurus · 09/02/2022 13:26

Yes a new monologue was added some years ago and there were dire warnings that it had to be presented also. We chose not to.

MaMaLa321 · 09/02/2022 13:27

..and there's the transwoman - Juno Dawson.
Fucking Guardian

IvyTwines · 09/02/2022 13:31

Surprise.

IntermittentParps · 09/02/2022 13:46

Just had a look and I don't get why people say they're trolling. Can someone explain? Genuine question.

SiobhanSharpe · 09/02/2022 14:07

I knew there would be one, and they've gone for Juno Dawson, who writes porn for young adults and who thinks all gay men secretly want to be women, like aJuno did.
This article from the Independent, by a gay writer, is enlightening.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 09/02/2022 14:34

Ah The Guardian you never let us down!!!

If only the women from Afghanistan had thought to identify out of her oppression eh

VeronicaBeccabunga · 09/02/2022 14:55

Saw this, saw the name Juno Dawson on the cover, couldn't bring myself to read any of the contributions except Emma Thompson while I waited to collect someone from a medical appointment.
Depressing.
I'm a life-long Grauniad reader and wish there was an alternative, but can't find one.

IntermittentParps · 09/02/2022 15:09

I really don't think I'm getting this. Why are people angry about the contributors other than Juno Dawson?

justaftb · 09/02/2022 15:24

No one is angry about the other contributors. The point is that the series is "Living in a woman's body", but of course, The Guardian being what it is, inevitably includes a male body in the series. So, it's not a series about "Living in a woman's body" it's a series about everyone, people, males and females. The title is misleading.

The Guardian are trolling because on the one hand they’re always wringing their hands over issues like violence against women & girls, how women are disadvantaged eg in the workplace or the health service and the effect of social media on young womens self esteem

Whilst at the same time insisting that the definition of women must also include men thereby negating all of the what is listed above. How can they possibly challenge violence against women for example if they include men within women when it’s men who perpetuate the vast majority of the violence in the first place?

IntermittentParps · 09/02/2022 15:35

Thank you, Theeyeballs and justaftb.

Lottapianos · 09/02/2022 15:39

'and there's the transwoman - Juno Dawson.

Oh FFS. That's bloody maddening

OldCrone · 09/02/2022 16:06

Is this the series?

I can only see 3 women on this link (all women): Eve Ensler, Nazia (in Afghanistan) and Frances Ryan. I can't see anything about Juno Dawson or Emma Thompson. Are those just in the print version?

theqentity · 09/02/2022 16:08

Eve Ensler is capable of making up her own mind, she hasn't been 'got', do you not realise how ridiculous that sounds? Or are women not allowed to decide to recognise and support trans women? We've all been 'got' have we? Is that not incredibly sexist?
IvyTwines · 09/02/2022 16:12

It's also the weird, on the slab disconnectedness of the title, as though you were a disembodied brain and 'a woman's body' was a suit you put on like the Wrong Trousers or a meat avatar (or worse).

I read the tablet edition and I've got more than that.
SiobhanSharpe · 09/02/2022 16:21

I have the print version but also looked online to see if there were any comments. Quel surprise, Juno's piece doesn't seem to appear (and hence no comments either) .
